Amazing compilation! But still, Boers are soldiers to respect, they resisted like lions.

Goodbye Dolly Grey was actually written during the Spanish-American war which pre-dated the Boer War, that it is normally associated with.

I seem to recall it was actually published in 1897, just before that war. It’s popularity in the anglophone realm, at the turn of the century, has enshrined it as a classic among commonwealth nations.

General Buller doesn’t deserve the criticisms he gets, he saved Natal and George White. He was the first of the generals to adapt to Boer tactics such as using creeping barrages, stopping Botha’s shenanigans. Secondly he greatly redeemed himself with the capturing of 9,000 Boers and Laing Nek far outweighed his reverses at Colenso or Spion Kop in terms of killed or captured personnel. Alas, the British army’s factionalism between Lord Roberts and Wolseley is to blame.

The problem in those days was the "Indian" Generals vs "African" Generals! The war was run by the "Indian" Generals who side lined the "African" Generals and Buller was a "African" General!

What about the song "The Road to Gundegai"? (a tiny town in New South Wales, I think). I have just been reading "The Covenant" by James Michener which is why I looked up "Marching to Pretoria" on You Tube. So much warfare, so much death; every tiny settlement in New Zealand with a World War memorial to the young men lost. These songs keep us in touch with the past.

The Road to Gundagai wasn't written until 1922, two entire decades after the Boer War ended. I don't deny its significance to us in Australia, but it doesn't belong in this playlist. Nevertheless, if you're planning on doing a WW2 playlist, it'd be great if you included it there :)

A much forgotten war, which Britain lost in military terms, but won politically. Makes a change from all the war since then. GSTK.

So proud of my great grandfathers who fought the Boers. Destroyed the evil aggressors. One relieved Ladysmith from the Boer invasion and the other conquered Pretoria then rounded up the fanatics.

A barely remembered past, but these songs represent us British at a time when the Empire meant something to us , right or wrong, but I saw the right of it in Aden before it was given away by a new class of- semi-aware - Politicians who did that, knowingly, of what they were giving away . The men who sang Dolly Grey back then, would, I am sure, rise from their graves if possible to be able to fight and destroy all that has afflicted our once proud nation in this time of betrayal, again , by our own kind. The Boers were the enemy, sure, but they weren't evil, not like our present enemy within who have flooded us with people who have never heard of Dolly Grey-or of the class of men who sang it. I can only hope that some Churchillian figure rises up to remind us of that before It's too late.
