hmm. there has been some controversy around betterhelp and i remember a few years ago, as the pandemic started, all the content creators that were getting sponsored by betterhelp started getting criticized for accepting their sponsorship. i don't know what the issue was. i kind of think this might have been a better video with a collab from one of the many therapist content creators on yt. georgia dow is one that comes to mind. but... as someone who was seriously considering quitting life for good just an hour ago, i think this is ultimately a good thing to talk about and encourage transparency.

Been in that mindset my entire life as a child of the 80s....still deal with it. People don't give a damn about mental health in men, and mostly people don't care unless there is something in it for them or they can get credit for "helping"

Boy you hit the nail on the head with this video. I had a wife for 20 years and she cheated on me. I've dated 2 woman in the past 21 yrs. 1 told me I didn't care after 3 dates, the other gave me I've met someone else. Sick n Tired of that. Wife told me She had better things to do. Reached out to old friends that I knew since I was 5! 1 never responded, the other invited me to a party. Figured they weren't even worth the phone call. I too have basically stopped dating. I can't do some of the things I use to. I bowl 1x a week and have a good time. I have 1 son who's Autistic and suffers from seizures. I worked for a company and I was very close to getting a Directorship when they sold it off. I prayed not to loose my job. Be careful what you ask for. I was slowly demoted, had lost any support staff. But the silver lining was I found a job working for a small Office Equipment Dealership. This was a place I went in early and stayed late most days, but didn't mind it. After Divorce I had enough energy to get up, work, come home, take care of my son. I lost everything! House , savings and ended up with 10 years of debt! So talk about committing Suicide? Most days! My son kept me going. But after dealing with Autism for over 30 years, it's coming to a point of leaving. I can't stand it any longer. Feeling trapped is an understatement. And I feel like an asshole, because you don't feel like that towards your own child.

I have an Autistic daughter. Didn't say a word till she was 7. Still needs help in the bathroom. She'll be 18 this year. It's hard for folks who don't have special needs kids (grown or not) to understand what it's like to know that you will need to care for your child till one of you passes. It never ends. It's a huge burden to deal with. My wife has been on anti-depressants practically since we got the diagnosis. We have found local support groups (Autism Speaks has a network of support groups) to be a huge benefit. If you're not in one now, see if you can't find one. 15 or 20 minds are way better than one. Good luck...I'm with you.

As a single father whose faced similar circumstances I won't offer condolences because I know it won't help but I will say this; you stay strong for yourself and your son and the rest is just dressing. Don't mistake that anger as being AT your child, it isn't. It's normal and it will pass when you accept that your anger is at circumstances not your son. You've shown your strength now just stay strong knowing you are doing what a father does. Counselling helps if you can get it but know that your son is grateful to you for being there to help him. Be proud, you're on the right path.

@@dickfitzwelliner2807 I agree with you and it's also important to be respectful and on that I mean my relationship with my 25 year old. My wife and I separated when he was 10 but even though I saw him every moment possible, it has an effect on our relationship. She didn't remarry nor did I so that wasn't an issue but my stand is to respect his manhood and try to be a positive person in his life, actually on the drive to drop him at his home I think the possibility of another father son vacation might happen (I hope he decides on another since the many we did when he was younger were awesome on many levels) thanks Brandon, stay cool man!

@edterryberry255 totally get it. I tend to get pushy when it comes to "being a man". He and his friends don't do much but play video games. I want him to understand the bigger picture of life. I'm 40 and sometimes my dad gives me lessons on things. Your son will never be too old to take advice or teach him. A fathers education doesn't end when the kid moves out. Sure he's doing what he's doing, but having some guidance along the way is nice even though at the time the kid hates it.

Men's mental health is treated as joke in this country. I've had a few bouts with major depression in my life. By far the worst happened a couple of years ago. Long story short I thought my wife was leaving me for another guy. I had in my head that she was leaving me and she was going to take the kids. I don't have any fire arms in the house but I do have a concrete nail gun in the garage. It was shear luck that saved my butt that night, I forgot the key the toolbox it was in and I forgot there were bolt cutters not three feet from the tool box. I was really lucky that night. I tried to go to consoling after that but I don't think I was taken very seriously by the therapist. I gave up on after a couple of months. I've had to find my own ways of dealing with it. I'm doing better now, marriage is still really rocky. Been trying to reconnect with old high school buddies and trying to find some local mens groups. Men are told to shut up and deal with it, really is not a lot of places men can find support.

I'll tell you my unemployment story. I was a business owner and the business, after 20 years, failed (remember 2008 and what followed??). I was in a small industry with limited opportunities. I knew I was going to have a really difficult time finding employment, mainly due to my age (53 at the time) and the fact there were just not that many people out there doing what I do. Talk about anxiety. I'm going from successful business owner to wondering how I'm going to feed the family. Being that my skills were highly sought after (remember very few people are doing what I can do) I actually had 3 companies recruit me within a month of closing up shop. What I thought would be a hindrance to finding employment, was actually a huge positive. I accepted one of the positions and have been there over 10 years.

The loneliness definitely hits home to me. I've moved a few too many times, so the close friendships I built in other cities are no longer around. I may still regularly text a few, but that can't completely replace having them at close proximity. I have friends and community in the city I currently live in, but I don't think I've been able to create the kind of deep friendships here that I was able to build in previous years. I also lack a romantic partner and family and have a lot of trouble pursuing those things, so that's another issue. I've been part of co-ed groups where the women seemed to have no issue getting together for "girls nights" on occasion, but we men almost never did anything just together. The women I know often are more comfortable being physically affectionate with each other as well. Now, I'm not saying men should snuggle on the couch or hold hands or something, but we men typically don't engage in any kind of physical touch with one another except maybe handshakes, which means that single men with no romantic relationship or children can go very long periods of time without intimate touch. We should probably be more willing to touch in some way. I had male friends in the past that I regularly hugged, but I haven't had that in a long time. I remember The Art of Manliness publishing an article years ago showing pictures of men in past decades or centuries that would show pretty manly-looking men showing each other affection that men these days likely wouldn't do. Maybe some of that should be brought back.

As a 19 year old I served a mission for my church for two years where I lived away from home and was only supposed to email family and friends once a week (fortunately this old rule has been updated to include calls/video calls). We also weren't supposed to get involved in romantic relationships. All through my childhood and youth I was surrounded by friends and family. I absolutely consider myself an extravert. TLDR; I have kind of experienced this, even within a relatively short timespan. I had a missionary partner/room mate who would show more physical affection than most, including in the form of playful (and sometimes less playful) wrestling, but also lots of hugs and just putting your arm on your shoulder when talking to you kind of thing, and I realized how much I missed that and valued physical touch, from anyone. I loved my mission trip btw. Now go hug a brother.

I have a similar story. Today I’m an 18 year old men but due to moving a lot when I was small and a period of depression I lost the ability to easily interact and make friends but what I missed the most was when I was a kid I was a very touch centered kid I would easily hug people but for the last few years I didn’t feel the intimate or loving touch of someone which has kinda effected my mental health for the worst. Basically touch starvation for men is a real thing and we also need hugs 😢

Unfortunately, for all the blustering society does about mental health, a lot of help just isn't available. Especially for men. I was talking to my GP (who's female, and a foreigner, so cultural attitudes might factor in) about anxiety after having several panic attacks in 2021. Never had them before then. I basically got brushed aside. Got told "we'll make sure it's not physical, then we'll see about your mind." No followup, no referrals. She hasn't contacted me since. Plus the stuff the Canadian government is doing with broadening medically assisted self-deletion to include mental health issues, scary times gentlemen. I also find it hard to find groups of like minded people IRL. The face of my community has really changed in the last few years, so I find myself having less and less in common with other men around me. Lot of old friends have drifted away. So I definitely understand what it's like to feel trapped.

Antonio, thank you so much for making this video. I am 18 going on 19, and have been watching your videos in hopes of making a change in my life following a series of rejections and period of misery. I have been following your advice regarding clothing and behaviour, but at points I have thought to myself "there is no way I can accomplish what he has, we are completely different people, and have completely different experiences". Seeing this video means a lot, as it has shown me that we aren't so different, and has inspired me that maybe, just maybe, if you can do it, then I, with your help and guidance, can too. Thank you, my friend

@dgunn4408 Жыл бұрын
My friend, I'm not Antonio, but your message caught my eye. As a former "18 going on 19" year old myself, I want to tell you that I believe in you, brother. You're going the right direction. At twice your age now, let me tell you some things I wish I had been told back then: 1. The world is going to pit moral virtue against personal gain and put you in situations where you feel like you have to choose. Don't buy in. Point your moral compass north and act on it wherever that leads, even if it hurts you in the short term. Moral virtue *is* personal gain, but not because you have it, because you *act* on it. This is how strength, resilience, and honour are built, but only if you learn to value *who you are* over where you end up. 2. Learn how to give the bad news and make enemies; and learn how to do both productively. Sometimes you are going to have to give and receive bad news, and sometimes people aren't going to like you no matter what you do - and that's ok. It's part of life, and it's unavoidable. However, the cost to your psychological well-being of trying to make bad news less bad and making sure everyone likes you all the time is usually only recognized at the end, and it's rarely worth it. 3. You are the permanent fixture in your own life, and you need to advocate for yourself. Develop a complete person and bring it with you everywhere you go. Your mental health is your jurisdiction, and no one has the right to tell you how you feel. It's rarely easy to speak up for yourself, hence Antonio's video, but I promise you there is never a good reason to "suck it up" when "working it out" takes just as much effort but leaves you better off in the end.

I keep thinking over the recent years about joining a small town community as Ive gotten older and thinking about if I dont have kids, at least to contribute to others kids or community at large. Find the type of job that lets me move to my ideal landscape, weather, and people and make some difference. I like things small like you, but not just 1500 people. I spent a year in a 800 people community before for work, its a literal village environment. I'd like anywhere between 25,000 to 100,000. The last out of state job i had, the people talked about how anything more than 60 degrees was getting hot and any town with more than 10,000 was crowded. They also had some of the best hunting in the country.

I started life as a sartorial up until about the age where I was being made fun of in school because I was the only one that wore Taylor made clothes. But then I rediscovered it later in life much much later, and it seems to have healed a great deal of things seeing as how I feel like I’ve come a full circle. I kinda want to blame my depression years on me, running away from my true self, which is being a sartorial gentleman. A long story short everything fell into place with ease, and now taking on the world as my true self, I feel able to combat and push away negative feelings with that same ease

This hits home...Ibeing a child of the 80s and a guy, we were always told to bottle it up, man up. My bottle broke in the early 2000s' while in the army and I snapped and ended up in the "nut house". My depression stemmed more from loneliness and all, i was an loner before there was a trendy name for it and now everyone thinks or wants to be an introvert.."ohh...i can't stand being around people." Humnans are social creatures and God made us to be social, and when you constantly feel like a social outcast it hurts, especially having an older brother that was the outgoing and popular one.

I’ve thought for a long time that depression stems from feeling insignificant. I think talking through your emotions can work wonders for women because they feel significant when their emotions are validated, but for men we seek recognition for the things we build, create or accomplish even if it’s only from ourselves. Our achievements will always have substance to us and be a consistent source of self worth.
@raresmocanu1743
@raresmocanu1743 Жыл бұрын
That is if we have any. Modern society makes it harder to actually do anything worthwhile with your life - you're given all these digital drugs (alongside physical ones) and you can very easily find life's slipped past you and you actually are insignificant, with no achievement to justify your existence.

Curling is a great time! It's a low barrier to entry sport and can be as physically intense as you want it to be. Being a member of the club is a great community. You get to socialize before, during, and after the game with your own team and your opponents each week. As another commenter pointed out, you will feel better being in the group no matter which group it is. Great video as always Antonio!

Thing that bugs me is when women ask us to "open up and show our feelings" more, yet they don't like what they see when we do. What women are really asking, if you decode the subtext, is for us to open up and show our feelings *in a female way* which doesn't work. When things make me angry, I bottle that anger because I know it will do more harm than good to show it. So the takeaway for women (if any are watching): be careful what you wish for when you ask us to show our feelings, and be ready for a download that doesn't always fit your worldview.

I remember Dr. Melfi from the Sopranos pointing how depression is anger, rage turned inward. And I guess sometimes that anger fills up within and has nowhere else to go, but out, so lashing out is imo definitely a good sign if someone is depressed

Being little over 30 years old and over 10 years as single and non-existent close romantic reliationship, this has really eaten my mental health. As a coping mechanism I've focused on doing as much work as possible. I've only recently woken to that this coping mechanism has even further destroyed my life, not only mentally but I've started to skip meals and gym/exercising. I've lost 10kg in the past year going down to 75kg as 170cm. This might sound good in BMI but the weight loss was from my muscles so it's actually pretty bad thing. Also getting two burnout diagnoses in ten years most recent being just one year ago. Although I think I've never recovered from the first one so that burnout phase is chronic but not that severe. I still function in work but in very low stamina. And in the current office work I've gotten really toxic boss. Now I'm in a brink of quitting the current job and take 1-2 years to recover myself.

When people say 'suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem', I think that's only half true, as being broke or going through a tough time emotionally may indeed only be a temporary problem, but what about permanent problems people are dealing with like say for example Parkinson's Disease, Motor Neuron Disease, Cerebral Palsy or M.S? Those are permanent problems that cannot be cured; so to be honest I only half agree with the statement that 'suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem(s). Tell that to someone dealing with a progressive, debilitating non curable condition and they would react in a different way and say something like: 'my problems aren't temporary, though'-I know that people mean well when they say things like that, but I'm just saying it's not always the case with everyone that their problems are temporary. You made some great points in this video, though. We as men need to talk about this more openly. Thanks as always Antonio, Sean

Sometimes your family can't help you either cuz a lot of times they spread your information to their friends and associates making it worse for you the victim. Sometimes it's better to just seek professional help while still informing your family about certain things that's affecting you. You have to be so very careful who you vent to these days 🤦🏾‍♂

Totally agree with everything! I think we approach men's mental health without a good understanding of men's psychology and how we experience things like depression. For me, when I was suffering from depression after my second combat deployment, the three things that probably saved my life were (a) getting into fly fishing, (b) meeting an awesome fishing buddy, and (c) the awesome leaders I had in my unit who made it easy to get what I was dealing with off my chest without fear of losing my job (I was a squad leader at the time). It's been nearly ten years since the thoughts of ending myself started to creep in, but now I'm married to an amazing woman who I had a beautiful baby daughter with and a second kiddo on the way.

Antonio, I just wanted to say I appreciate this video, and also these newer videos that are heavily detailed and thought through. I have been a watcher for years but find myself feeling more fulfilled by the end of each of your videos. The amount of time and consideration put into these aren’t lost on me. I appreciate the deep dive in men’s mental health. I struggle with my inner dialogue and sometimes being more forgiving with ourselves and our thoughts goes a long way. I am regularly seeing a therapist and have begun to understand some of the issues I have had developed due to problems at home. My therapist recommended “Adult Children, The secrets of dysfunctional families by John and Linda Friel” and has really opened my eyes in a lot of ways. I recommend giving it a read if any men here have been in abusive family situations. Stay true to yourself fellas.

Gym workout, diet (Quality food, multi-vitamin, minerals, Omega 3, zinc, Protein shakes) it is the best cure for depression. At least for me works. And after 35+ years old, for men, ceck your Testosterone levels (total and free). A low level of test it is the one of main reasons of depression in adult men. Because TRT it is the aswear, not SSRI or anti-depressant pills.

Yes a good diet, sleep etc. can help, up to a point, but there may be a time where we *need* to talk that is seek professional help. As not everyone can afford proper diets, get enough sleep etc. Even in the USA to get one's TST tested can cost a lot of money, not all American men can afford thus!

Great video. One of the best things I ever did for myself was break my obsession with Facebook. I used to sit with my phone in my face on FB for hours a day, get all my news content on there, and lurk in the comments section arguing with people over everything and anything... there's nothing more toxic. Doing that had a big hand in destroying my marriage. Don't do it, guys, get your phone and devices out of your face and rejoin reality. These days I solely stick to YT, and the YT section can be pretty toxic, but if you choose not to feed the trolls, you'll be fine.

Antonio, thank you so much for this! I'm a huge proponent of therapy of mental health issues. I openly speak about to my friends without embarrassement because I know how it helped me! One thing I noticed over the years is that a lot of men seemed to not be as open as listeners and that can hurt their own friends who need a confidant to just listen to them, too. It's a funny dichotomy in the worst way.

The first and last time I ever felt suicidal was when I was a sophomore in high school. Something clicked in me one day and I remember saying to myself, "I want to see how everything pans out all the way to the end. I'm not taking the easy way out. Life is already a temporary status. I'm going to get as strong as possible." As I grew older, I was able to channel all that mixture of energy doing something positive whether it's helping others or working hard on a project big or small. The hardest challenges in life are during the time when you're not in control, the world is in complete chaos, and you're under constant attack or threat. I've been able to live through and even thrive in those scenarios alone. Hence, there were a great deal of challenges during COVID that people were completely crazy about but I was out there doing everything I can to make things happen. COVID had greatly slowed my growth but I'm never giving up. I've even encountered a work scenario where people were trying to desperately tire me and use mental duress to brain wash me into tearing me down. I'll tell you what, guys. Once you know people's intent, their methods are no longer effective. It's been a crazy journey so far but my strength of character and power will not be put down by weak people. They can try but believe me when I say, I haven't used the skill set I have to go on the offensive yet.

suicide for religious people, can be a form of a cop-out, also a major sin, that is very major sin, murder of a person may be forgiven, however, of one self, there is no forgiveness as if one murders a person, one can ask God for forgiveness, whereas if one commits suicide, it can not be reversed, it's too late, one is now dead, there's no way back from the dead, I call suicide *Self-Murder* However, if one can seek help from one's church members or external if needed to be. *PLEASE* seek help *NOW* ....

I've experienced this with pretty much every male community that I've been part of. They like you when you're the small newbie, but when you work harder than them at applying the principles /values and begin to actually grow in life, some hate this and try to go against you.

Part of the reason I'm becoming a counselor. Men suffer, aren't taught to handle the emotions and not surprisingly they kill themselves. Were as emotional as women. We just don't allow ourselves (for all kinds of valid reasons) to feel - we pay a very heavy price for it.

@Yuyutsu essentially a "men-centric" group focused on self improvement and community. The term stems from The Matrix movie upon learning the hard reality of life in dating, work and society. Others will give definitions, but keep an eye out on the shaming language they will use to describe RP, you'll be surprised.

@Yuyutsu In the context of the post, it means someone, in this case a psychologist, who does NOT align, subscribe, believe or agree with the crap that the left wing Democrats are doing. Someone who is a red blooded, conservative , American who has COMMON SENSE, doesn't believe In being "offended" by words and who understands there is a fundamental, biological and UNCHANGEABLE difference between men and women and who does NOT believe there is such a thing as "Toxic masculinity" and that it's ok for men to just be men. But overall "Red-pilled" is a reference to the Matrix movies Blue pill or Red pill, but with the Blue pill representing the leftist Democrats and the red pill the right wing conservatives.

Real strength is being open, vulnerable, and honest, even when the subject is difficult. I'm hoping that more men will listen to men who have successfully conquered the pain, suffering, and depression that they have faced in their lives. Thinking that EMDR, EFT tapping, dialectical behavior therapy and even just physical activity can sometimes allow people to process their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I am 34... i started moving around Europe when i was 20...for that reason, i wasnt able to craft deep connections with ppl around me as i move frequently. To be honest i dont even remember what is like to have a close friend or relative or anything. My parents and i dont get along and my other relatives we see each other once in a while and thats it... I remeber a few years ago it was tough and just like Antonio said, was using substancens, alcohol, u get the point... But this is not the case anymore and i must say i somewhat enjoy solitude. I went home to meet with my family for Christmas and new year and boy i am so glad its over; can't wait to get back to work and to my routine. Its been a tough journey to get where i am right now, no doubt about it, but i made it. I have learned to enjoy the little things in life and that i dont need anybody to be happy. Thats not to say that i dont go out for a drink with a co-worker or whatever, its just that for me, social life is not a necessity anymore...
