How sturdy are the bevel gears?

I think you are over engineering it. You could have used a C clamp (or two) as a mechanism to raise and lower the blade. The box you built was fine. Then just throw a wider base and a cutting table on it. Obviously, it's as unsafe as can be, but for straight cuts it will get the job done.
