UPDATE: The Tales From The Crypt reboot, which was set to be showcased on TNT and helmed by M. Night Shyamalan has been canceled. So, why was Tales From The Crypt canceled? In an interview, Shyamalan confirmed that it was issues with obtaining the proper rights from all the different companies that own a piece of Tales From The Crypt. So, it looks like our good old pal, The Cryptkeeper, will never get to make his big screamiere as this project is officially dead.
M. Night Shyamalan and TNT’s Tales From the Crypt reboot is on the horizon! But before you horror-heads jump into this fresh take on an old boogeyman, TalkHorror invites you to take a look back at the original HBO adaptation’s most unforgivingly dark episodes. From toxic relationships to poisonous plots, only time will tell if the new “Tales” will have the same courage to dip into the truly grimy side of horror!
The cheat-sheet:
10: Four-Sided Triangle
9: The Sacrifice
8: Three’s a Crowd
7: Easel Kill Ya’
6: Forever Ambergris
5: The Kidnapper
4: Abra Cadaver
3: Yellow
2: Split Second
1: The Bribe
Fun fact:
Of these tales, only Abra Cadaver and Forever Ambergris actually come from the Tales From the Crypt comic magazine! Seven out of ten of the selected episodes originate from EC Comics’ Shock Suspenstories, while Easel Kill Ya’ is from Vault of Horror

I too wouldn't call Carrion Death dark or depressing. It was a bit grim, and it definitely had its squeamish "body horror" moments, like when the criminal turns the cop's badge into an axe and tries to cut the cop's hand off and free himself...but sunstroke causes him to miss. Guess whose wrist he chops instead. O_O But yeah, it's not really dark because the villain gets what's coming to him. He gets it the moment the cop swallows the key to the handcuffs. Cosmic justice is _so_ delicious. >:)

Christian Welch it's mine too. A lot of movies are missing the creepy factor of horror and that episode was really creepy. I wasn't scared. Personally, I don't think I can be scared of horrors anymore.I think I've seen all of them but this episode was definitely creepy. Most of the tales of the crypt episode to me were enjoyable because they were funny to me. Like the first couple of nightmare on elm street, very creepy. The rest of them were funny as hell because Freddy Krueger became sort of a comedian with the way he worded things and cursed people out 😆

Was it just from the scuzzy old farmer putting the moves on the sexy young farmhand? Yeah, Four-Sided Triangle was one of my favorites; Chelcie Ross and Susan Blommaert really brought that scuzzy old farmer and his screeching harpy of a wife to life, and Patricia Arquette was yummy as always. I actually felt a bit bad for the wife when she's discovering whom she just pitchforked to death, and the camera moves and there's the farmhand right behind her, holding the pitchfork...but I can't say that the farmer and his wife didn't have it coming! >:)

@@BloodyBayI'd have to agree with you. After all:Look how they treated that poor young lady. People tend to get what they deserve, though, sooo....... I still remember the first time that I saw Patricia Arquette. It was from the movie "A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. After A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, which, according to some people, said that, while it was indeed watchable, saw a dropoff in Ticket Sales in areas outside of the United States. Here, it made between $25,000,000-$30,000,000...well... somewhere around there. The third installment, A Nightmare On Elm Street 3:The Dream Warriors made $44,000,000+ Dollars, here in the United States, and plenty more Worldwide. I've digressed, though. Sorry about that. Personally, though, I've always thought that Patricia Arquette was an absolute Babe...and I always will!

@@ronaldshank7589 Good points, good points all around. And Freddy Krueger (and Wes Craven and Robert Englund) really helped her fly in their own ways. And conversations would be bland, unliving things if they never digressed nor deviated from their origins, wouldn't they? No worries there! 😉

For me one of the episodes that sends chills down my spine is "The Man Who Was Death". Refresher on the plot of this one: An cold-hearted executioner turns vigilante when the death penalty is revoked. In the original comic the reason he turns vigilante is because less people accused of crimes are getting the death penalty. In both stories his vigilantism comes back to bite him in the ass. For me it raises the moral question of if a known criminal-say a murderer-gets off scott free due to some flaw in the justice system is vigilantism against this person justified? In my opinion no, but try telling that to the murder victim's family and friends. Are a vigilante's actions truly just? Or are vigilantes just more law-breakers? In my opinion it's the latter, and in the criminal justice system vigilantism IS a crime, but what about those cases when the law itself is corrupt? It does make you kinda question your own morals and scruples.

Ahhh...yes. Where the series got it's start. An electrifying episode, indeed!

@ronaldshank7589 6 жыл бұрын
spy4863 One thing about it-the vigilante is only killing those who deserve to die. He's not bothering anybody else. I actually have to stick up for this guy, being that the justice system (in this case, at least), becomes too soft on crime. It's just too bad that he gets caught. Then, he ends up riding the lightning. Tragic!!!
@spy4863
@spy4863 6 жыл бұрын
On TV, in the movies and in the comics vigilantes are portrayed as "heros" for taking out criminals who can't be touched by the law. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality they're just thugs and lawbreakers no different than the criminals they claim to be stopping. That's one reason why vigilantism is a crime in most cities and states. Often they act out of emotion rather than out of a true sense of justice. In the original comic story the executioner starts hunting down defendents that were clearly innocent of the crimes they were accused of and the juries found them so, and so they were let go because they deserved to go free. They were innocent. The executioner hunts them down and murders them because he thinks they "deserved to die". This was changed for some reason when the episode was made to where the accused actually WERE guilty of their crimes but got off scott free because of some technicality. But two wrongs don't make a right. A person who murders an accused murderer without a fair trial is still a murderer, even if they believe their act was "justified". Jack Ruby went to prison for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald. Even though the murder could be considered "justified" by many that doesn't make it right. How can one single person or revenge minded group determine who "deserves to die"? And what happens when they target the wrong person-a very frequent occurrence with vigilantes? It's true that the law makes those same mistakes but that's why defendents are allowed to have lawyers and witnesses and others who can defend them. They're also allowed to appeal a case when they think they've been wrongly accused. In the justice system both sides of the story are heard and evaluated and everyone's rights are taken into account. Not so with vigilantes. They like to play the arresting officer, lawyer, judge, witnesses and jury all at once. And that really ticks off the REAL justice system. Imagine if you or someone you loved were targeted by vigilantes because they assumed you or your loved one were the one who commited a crime because you just happened to look like the real criminal or were in the same general area where the crime was committed. Or someone targeted you just simply because they don't like you. Vigilantism should be known by its more accurate names-"revenge" and "hate crimes."

My favorite dark episode is "Revenge is the Nuts". While it does have a happy ending, it's really screwed up and does delve into an important topic; the systematic abuse of disabled people (in this case, the blind residents of a "charitable" group home, as well as the developmentally disabled brother of the home's owner) that often gets swept under the rug.

Suckit Pig If you're thinking in terms of him being obnoxious, he shouldn't have been that way. Still, no one deserves to die that way. Unfortunately, once the real terror began, 1:The audience loved it, as did the T. V. station that that they were on, & 2:By then, not had it become terrifyingly real, it was too late for anybody to do anything about it...especially poor ol' Horton, who by then was a dead corpse, just hanging around by his clothing, caught between Heaven and Earth. Think about this, kiddies:He went in looking for ghosts, & now he's one himself!!!

Sortalero; "Mornin' Mess" frightened me more than any other episode in this series. The reveal of the "Ghouls", at the end, was perfectly dark and chilling; especially while they laughed with evil glee upon ripping off the reporter's ear for consumption. Still gives me the chills just thinking about it. If this didn't make number 1 on any "Tales" list; it, at the very least, deserves to make it within the top ten.

I think the darkest one has to be Doctor of Horror. A doctor who apparently had his license revoked and is disgraced hires two boobs to help him to try steal human souls. The doctor believes there is a "soul gland" and tries to play God by determining why one is evil and other is good. He also wonders if he can make an evil person good by manipulation their life force. It's another battle of Faith vs Science.

These episodes were the darkest to me. The one where this student pretended to be the long lost Egyptian Princess so that she wouldn't be killed by a mummy! The chilling thought was when she told the teacher that she had sex with it! Eww! The one where this playwright gave an aspiring actress a love potion to get her to fall in love with him. The scariest part was when he accidentally poisoned himself instead of her! Then she showed up in the afterlife with her face all disfigured because she threw herself out the window because she couldn't live without him! And when those rich old women who have been murdered by a bluebeard have come from their graves for him! Seeing their distorted faces gives me the willies!

Fitting Punishment is a particularly dark episode. A young boy who after losing his parents is murdered by his selfish, money hungry uncle. Television Terror is a pretty dark episode too, one that I think is overlooked. The main character Horton is an undeniable asshole, but leaving him to be murdered on national tv for the sake of ratings is very messed up. It's the one episode in which I always wanted to know what happened after the end. Was the tv crew fired? Was there a trial? What happened to the ghosts? There are very few episodes in the show in which such an act of cruelty was this public, and no one really seemed bothered by it.
