Crazy About Fly Fishing

I've always wanted to catch bonefish, since I started fly fishing, since I heard about bonefish the first time. My first trip to Aitutaki was only a partial success and I wanted redemption for that 2019 trip...I wanted to catch a sight-fished bonefish on fly!

As I say in the film, get a guide for that trip of a lifetime to catch a bonefish or you might catch none. These are the guides that will sort you out:

What a trip, so full of fun and adventure, whatever can go wrong will but that makes for fantastic memories. Makes catching a trout seem a little tame, I found first time on kings that you need to have everything so well lined up to get the result and Bone Fish are a level above that again. Thanks for sharing.

Nice video.I spent 2 weeks there this last year. I slayed the trevally and those little snappers. Got good shots a few big bones but no sight casting hook ups. I did get torn to shreds dragging the "milk" out off honeymoon. Those bomies will get ya everytime. Got smoked by a GT on a 12wt. Went offshore for GT's and got humiliated by 4 big ones....broke 80lb braid like it was nothing....then hooked a marlin on a 20# spin rod offshore on a plastic swim bait! I LOVE fishing Aitutaki! probably why I just booked 21 days there this next summer.....

So good Johan! Wow what a crazy adventure. I've sorta resisted the idea of bone fishing and tropical salt in favor of more local adventures, but seeing how much fun you had DIY makes me rethink that. I especially love how you could just lay out in the water when you needed a break!

Seriously good video. As someone who has done a couple of trips out there already (and has another one booked) then I can say that this should be compulsory viewing for anyone thinking of heading to Aitutaki to chase bones. And I second your point about getting a guide - even if it is only for half a day. You don't know what you don't know. We "diy'd" the first two days before we had a couple of days with Butch - and very quickly worked out we were walking the flats way to fast, and probably missing heaps of fish as a result.

Thanks Damon, very much appreciated. I can't wait to go again some day, maybe I'll find a way to do it again next year! A guide is a must if you haven't been before, not getting one can just ruin what should be the trip of a lifetime. Hope your next trip is a banger.

Awesome Video I too have experienced the discouragement of not catching a bonefish on a trip designated for them. Went down the Bahamas this year, in hopes to get our first bonefish (DIY); my best friend got his day 1 of the 7 days we were there. Nonetheless, that was the only bonefish we got to hand that trip. Can't wait to go back and try at them again. Brilliant video. Perfectly captures the reality of highs and lows of DIY bonefishing.

Great story guys but just a heads up about the fishery to the DIY crew. Was over there for the first 2 weeks in August and did not know that they dredged the channel. The nearby flats are stuffed with a foot and a half of sludge. If you intend to go guided then no problems but otherwise you are restricted to the lagoon. I won't go back for at least another year and hope the flats recover.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Real fishing complicated by wind and tides . I have had the chance to do in Cuba (Cayo Largo) a small unspoiled island off the mainland and I was guided ! Epic fishing , huge schools of bones , permit and tarpon as well . Amazing trip of a lifetime . Ended up catching only bones but I was such a novice and it takes plenty of patience and the guide was so worth it .

After fishing in salt water, what maintenance should I do and how should I do the fly reel to preserve it?
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Ай бұрын
Wash the reel and rod in freshwater agter every day while you are on the trip and give it all a complete clean once home. Check drag, relubricate etc. Make sure it dries well and check for any salt or corrosion and deal with it asap. My reels are simple so I soak them in lukewarm water and change it a few times to make sure all the salt gets out of the backing. Just get that saltwater off anything metal as soon as you can each day while you are out.

Yes, you can buy a license from the boatshed. A think a week is $50NZ from memory. The rules are on the back. It allows you to fish in most areas apart from a few guide only and nursery areas.
