10 Easy Pieces that will TEST Beginner Classical Guitarists

Here is a list of 10 easy pieces that may test new classical guitarists as they advance to more difficult intermediate pieces. This list is by no means comprehensive, as there are countless pieces that can test ANY guitarist. Don't forget to leave a comment and tell us what pieces you struggled with as a beginner!

Totally agree with Nosmirk. Some of those pieces are not easy at all. Julia Florida is difficult and a concert piece. I really hope beginners don't think I should be playing this and get put off the instrument.

Anything by Barrios Mangore is difficult but fantastic.

Easy is rather subjective. Even a piece like Spanish Romance has a few awkward chords in the second part, which are a struggle to play smoothly. Nothing is easy in classical guitar.

Chords we see every day are easy because we do them often. It's the same thing with the trickier parts. The more repetitions of those tricky parts / unit of time, the better

Agreed. Adelita is fairly straightforward, but the 3rd last bar can catch you because it's so different in fingering and positioning from the rest. And even "easy" pieces can quickly become complicated once you start playing with tone, pacing and emotion. It's not simply a case of putting the notes on the page into sound.

It's nice to hear some stuff that can be played and sound beautiful even by players who are still working to master the instrument. I have played about half of the ones on your list. The major section of Spanish Romance is a major finger killer and something I still have not mastered. The Werner arrangement of "Jesu" took me six months to get under my fingers and it is one of my favorites to play, as is Lagrima. Thanks for sharing the list and your playing

I remember these pieces when I was young. I didn’t appreciate then that it’s easy to read and play the notes but each piece is all about figuring out the emotion that each composer wanted and instilling that into the piece.

For anyone looking for tabs, No. 9 could also be Bach’s Prelude in C Major. Gounod superimposed a melody over a slightly altered version of the piece by Bach. I prefer Bach’s original to Gounod’s version personally.

I understood it. I had been hearing in KZfaq second version "Lagrima". It's some adding pieces and chords. Bach is hard for all time:) Tárrega❤ . 19324

My goal is learn la melancolia and Julia Florida. To me both of pieces are really simple to learn, i'm just need to take time to study these pieces

I'm not sure if I agree with this list. You have made some good choices, but: Julia Florida is by far NOT a piece to give a beginner. It's in the highest grade levels of most exam programs for a reason. Ave Maria, Jesu, and La Melanconia I believe are also far too difficult for a beginner to learn effectively. Other than that, nice playing of these pieces.

Agreed. Those were odd choices. Especially Julia Florida and melancholia. Jesu, joy of man's desire is actually OK for beginners once the shock of that many notes and no rest moments is overcome. None of the movements are difficult per se, it's just relentless. I don't think I'd give beginners the pieces you mention though, you want beginners to build confidence on the instrument and with reading music before you get more complexity in.

I’ve taught countless beginners on guitar, in several styles. Nearly every classical guitar piece, ostensibly written at any simple level, has passages that are far too difficult for anyone who has not played seriously and successfully tackled innumerable technical procedures. Many of the simpler pieces present difficulties for all but the most adroit. I think it’s probably the same for most instruments.

I think tarrega - etude in e minor is esier than adelita. And also antonio cano - etude no 7 is also easy, much esier than julia florida.

I'm probably an intermediate and had difficulty with jesu for some reason. The fingerings and timings are kind of unintuitive on that one for me personally

It's not a beginners piece, don't worry. It's relentless for the entire piece. Getting timing slightly wrong throws you off so much.

Adelita is not an easy piece, neither is Lagrima! I was just listening to Julian Bream playing it. It was gorgeous and showed how on an "easy" piece what mastery he had on the guitar...not easy at all!

No, it's not. Lovely test of sight reading for more advanced players because of the timings and the changes. It actually gets much, much, more difficult from pretty much the end of the section played in this video. A great piece, and really good for an angry day when you just want to have music that matches your mood and work out your frustrations on the strings.

Prelude in C? The Giuliani??? Julia Florida??? Ha ha... I don't know why this video showed up in my suggestions. The guy clearly isn't a guitarist!

Number 9 his hardly an easy piece. Nor is number 10. Yeah playing the “notes” may be accessible to a beginner. To play even the easiest classical piece with proper phrasing and and intent is difficult to any player. Because the better you get, the more you see and hear in the piece, I was just curious about this perspective of “easy but difficult.”
