Great suggestions for Apple TV shortcuts with clear instructions. I still think you should make a scene for your bedroom though. That way when you change accessories in there you don’t have to change this shortcut. But it is nice to show the flexibility of what that control home action can do.

Great content! I created a shortcut copying one of your Apple TV shortcuts. I can get it to turn on, select account, open app (fitness), but how do I get it to select only my Apple Watch and not another device in the household listed? Thanks!

Thanks, getting some super ideas! By chance, is there a command to use in a shortcut that’ll set / assign a Sonos AirPlay2 speaker as the “active” speaker for an Apple TV to use? Had tried Handoff Playback and set playback but neither seemed to have the desired result.

Thanks! And unfortunately if the Handoff playback doesn't work I don't know of another option. Would be nice to set a Sonos as default.

Thanks! It took a total of five times 😂. I finally got the ones I needed. Question regarding the automations you added at the end, I have the Hue app programmed to turn on every time I turn on my tv and sync the lights to what’s playing. Wouldn’t it just be easier to do that instead of building the long shortcut/automation?

Thanks for the great video! Is there any workaround to sleep an AppleTV through a HomeKit scene?

Thanks! And if you create a HomeKit *automation*, there’s an option to “Convert to Shortcut” at the bottom and then you’ll have access to sleep the tv. But a straight HomeKit scene doesn’t have the ability to put it to sleep. I would recommend creating a scene in the home app with all the commands you want, and then create a Shortcut that includes an action to run that scene. You can still trigger a shortcut like that with Siri (just say the name of the shortcut)

I had this same question yesterday! Could you do a video on this? I wanted to try to create a scene in Home to turn off lights and an AppleTV in my living room, and turn on lights and an Apple TV in my bedroom but found that there was first, no off or sleep option (just play or pause), and second, in Home app, ALL the Apple TVs (and HomePod) are either on at the same time or all are off. Tapping one device toggled all devices. Then I got stuck. 😬

Thanks for the video! Is there a way for me to launch an app when the apple tv is idle/standby? End goal - I have a kitchen TV that displays a web-based calendar/dashboard (dakboard). I am looking at using xcode to sideload tvOSBrowser on the apple tv, and would like the apple tv to 'launch' my dashboard when idle rather than the screensaver. I've been using a rasperry pi for years on this tv, but it's a 1 trick pony and I want to upgrade. :)

You can have a Shortcut wake the Apple TV and open an app, yes! But you can’t navigate to a specific menu or part of the app after that

Great straightforward video. Is there a way to play Apple Music when the screensaver is enabled? Or how do you get the state of the Apple TV 4K

Thanks! Just checked and it looks like there are no "Apple TV current state" type actions available, even with third party apps like Toolbox Pro. For music, you could setup a Shortcut that plays something and then "Set Playback Destination" to send it to your Apple TV

Great video, I'm now starting to use a feature I've been ignoring until now. The shortcut for waking an Apple TV on a desktop Mac (Studio) brings up an error "This action cannot be run because a required app is missing"....huh?

Thanks! And I actually haven't tried to run it on a Mac. I assume because there's not an Apple TV Remote Control app (or Control Center option) on the Mac, that it won't run.

Is there a way to launch a KZfaq Live Stream directly? We have a room we want to have tune into a livestream every week but I'm unsure if Apple TV is the right box to be considering.

Unfortunately the farthest you can get is opening the KZfaq app itself, but you can't auto play a specific video or live stream just yet.

2:54 if only shortcuts worked. Before iOS 17 I had my AppleTV wake up, open up the remote app, and load into my account. This now only wakes the Apple TV and logs into my account. 99% of the time I still have to select the specific TV and even when I do sometimes it kicks me out and makes me select again or the swipe (aka scrolling) doesnt work I can only click “enter” or “back” but jot swipe. It’s a hot mess for several weeks now. Sucks this was one of my go toos

For the caption shortcut, you can still ask Siri "what did he/she say?" It'll go back 15 seconds, turn on subtitles, and then turn off automatically when you get back to the spot you asked. I just tried it and it works well in third party apps like Netflix/Max.

@@beardfm yeah you would still need to use the remote, or Siri on the remote app on your phone (by pressing/holding the sleep button on your phone. It was one of the original cool features of the AppleTV, but only worked sporadically on third party apps. But now it seems to work more consistently for me.

I don’t get it. You have to pull out your phone, open it up, then pull up automations as opposed to just using the remote? Doesn’t make sense to me. Maybe I missed something.
