We had leipajuusto (squeaky cheese) every winter, my grandmother would send it to use every year during the Christmas season. You can still buy it in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where there is a large Finnish population. My grandfather would make us watch “Finland Calling” on the weekends.

for the english speakers in here who are watching this video: Viili is really weird stuff as its sort of like sour milk or sour cream BUT the main difference is as you can see in the video that its really "gooey" or "stringy" and it sort of has this slimey consistency :D its really hard to describe but it tastes good and you can get them flavoured too if you want! :P

Leipäjuusto looks very similar to a squeaky cheese we have in Brazil, called queijo coalho. We also have it grilled or baked, but usually with savory stuff. The viili texture seems so weird for a yogurt, I would love to try it. Also the rye chips, I wish there was something similar around here... I have a serious potato chip problem. (:

I once tried baking karjalanpiirakat at home on your Independence Day and they tasted nothing like those I had in Finland afterwards. :))) I think I'll try again with another recipe this December. I also baked pannukakku once (that one was a success). And I can't believe I visited Tampere this year and forgot to try mustamakkara (maybe my brain was deliberately trying to avoid it).

I also bake the Karjalanpiirakat at home, a lot actually. But what I found out is that the rye flour you use is really important and it can change how the final product taste. Once I baked using the finnish rye flour and it was reaaaally similar to what I had it Finland, but when I used the (in my case Czech) not Finnish rye flour - it was still pretty good but never as good as those from when I used the Finnish flour.

I think Finland is one of the best kept secrets in gastronomy. The food is pure and of excellent quality whether it's bread, cheese, meat products, drinks (including both brewed and dairy drinks) and fruits. I know i'd like to grab some Leipajuusto and Makkara when I next go shopping. I even like Mammi.

I eat Rye bread 5 days a week when I'm at work. Growing up I would eat all the rye bread at my grandma's Christmas gathering. She didn't mind cuz I was the only one eating it! I wish I could've met my great great grandparents. Just for some food ideas, I'd like to find some dishes to try and bring to my work. I'm a lead line cook, so I get the ability to run specials where I work.

Its fun to watch this video before and after living in Finland for more than a year :D I would say to me its seems like a rather peculiar selection of foods, but most of them indeed seem quite unique either to Finland or at least northern europe. I definitely have to try that squeaky cheese! :) I haven't eaten specifically Finnish blood sausage, but overall I would say the blood sausage is one of my favorite foods ever. When i first tried villi it was a big surprise to me. I though i have bought a normal sour cream for my soup, but it crawled into my soup from the spoon like a little snot monster :D I guess I have to try with a different mindset and try to perceive it as a desert

I haven't been to Finland but I've been in Sweden before and the people I stayed with ate cloudberry and lingonberry on ice cream and I liked that a lot. I also really loved that yogurt like stuff you had. There's nothing like that in the states. The thickest yogurt you can get is Greek yogurt but that's still not the same. I loved it so much that I can almost taste it just thinking about it. And I'm sure I'd like the meat pies since I got hooked on another type of meat pie that has more of a crispy pot pie type of crust that I found when I was in New Zealand and the UK. But they do sell Jamaican meat pies at the Dollar Tree which are similar except very very spicy. But I'm fat so obviously there's not too many foods I don't enjoy. LOL

Aaaw yeah, all the good stuff right there! Rruischips with a dab of savory mixture of ham/sourcreme(or viili) "salad" ... Or a dab of shrimp/mayo is always a great apetizer or just snackos deluxe. Huh! Weird, I've never stumbled across this black sausage, I'd probably enjoy it too since I regularly eat Swedish blood pudding (black pudding). The finnish rye näkkileipä made super thin like long rectangular wafers are slowly creeping out and taking market shares in Europe. I can find this thin Finnish crisp bread all the way down into Germany! Seen it in stores as far south as Cologne. The problem is, once you pop the packet you just can't stop eating it... just one more... yes, thats all I need... a li'l butter, some tasty cheese, a li'l finely chopped onions 😍😍😍

Hello from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA! My grandparents fled Finland around the turn of the century, to avoid advancing Russian overtaking. I am half Finntastic, but didn't know it until I was in my late 50s. My grandparents arrived at Ellis Island, and sent to Hibbing, Minnesota, whi by still has an intact Finnish population.

For the lihapiirakka you should try to stick cheese in in then microwave it. Take it out and put some ketsupi on it!! delicious! Im actually Swedish but all of my parents and grandparents are finnish so im common with the language, culture and the country. I feel way more finnish then swedish even do i dont speak finnish, All though i understand finnish with hearing. Hyvää ystävänpäivää

Great video!! Does anyone know where I might order some Finnish foods to be delivered in the United States? I’m going to throw a dinner party with Finland as the theme. I can make many dishes but I’d love to be able to order some of the snacks.

The karaljan pie reminds me of the American hot pockets and in the intro with what you showed was clearly a blood sausage. I haven't eaten either of those as of yet. Let alone I am yet to check the pH levels of all of the signature dishes.

I can buy Cloudberry jam at Ikea. My grandmas and mom made rye bread. My son is making rye bread now that they have passed on. We ate that sausage when I visited Finland in 1993. I can buy Finnish mustard in a tube from a Finnish store about an hour and a half away from my home.

I really like your site so am not complaining. I just noticed that when I was ordering some of your merchandise that I am planning to buy for my friends who live in Finland that the delivery cost is higher to deliver in Finland than it is to send it to the Uk which seemed strange.

Blood sausage, something similar to traditional boudin from Louisiana. I think most people, at least here in Texas, don't think of the blood variety though. Typical boudin around here is similar to the Czech's jaternice, rice and liver, or some other gibblet meat.

Making it is simple but you need a little bit viili as a base. Add milk. Leave it in room temperature. It's done when it remains still even if you try to shake it. Just remember to leave a bit and keep re-filling it with milk. That way you never run out.

What a surprise; here in Colombia we also have like a kind of sausage, which is made of blood and rice, of course, it's combined with other ingredients, but it's basically the same as the black sausage. Here it's called "morcilla" or "rellena"

I’m looking forward to trying Finnish squeaky cheese. My dad said when he was younger and would attend any special family occasions (weddings, funerals😆, etc) there would be squeaky cheese. One day I will be blessed 😂😭 But that texture of that “yogurt” is making me uncomfortable but intrigued to try! 😂😂

This video was a bit misleading, as I thought it would be more about Finnish cousin, rather than general foods, but it was still a really good video! I think the two too things I want to try the most out of all of these, are the Karjalanpiirakka, and the Mustamakkara! Other Finnish things I want to try when I go to Finland are the infamous Salmiakki (Salty licorice), and Veri-vanukas (Blood pudding), Bear and moose meat and Pinaattiletut (Spinach pancakes with jam) and more!
