Now, here we are, 5 sequels and a reboot later, and I still dont think the first justified a sequel. I guess the built-in RE fanbase kept it alive. If Blade Runner and 2049 are in here, you can say the same about The Shining and Doctor Sleep. Both didn't do well when they came out. I'm also surprised Pacific Rim got a sequel. I mean, I loved it, and it didn't exactly "bomb," but it barely spent any time at the theater. Just too bad about the sequel that we got Looking forward to the Transformers/GI Joe crossover. Rise of the Beasts was pretty solid and I'd like to see more Joe done right

It's long past due that we need to stop using terms like 'box office profits' and similar misleading terms. The days of movies making all or most of their money in theaters has been over for a while. The Boondock Saints segment of this video is a perfect example. It cost 6 million to make but only brought in 30,000 in the theaters, therefore it was the worst flop? It made over 50 million outside of theaters......that's a complete success based on it's budget. "Box office' is a term like Blockbuster video, it's no longer relevant to the topic being discussed.

Terminator, and Aliens was great in the first 2 movies than their quality went down hill, Fast and the Furious was a great movie, than it went down hill. @zachtwilightwindwaker5964 ай бұрын
I think it also costs quite a bit to advertise the movie.
@System_Sega4 ай бұрын
A film usually has to make roughly two and a half times it budget in order to turn a profit.
@poiujnbvcxdswq3 ай бұрын
Movie costs £31 Million, then you have advertising budget ontop of that to get your total actual budget. When they quote "takes XXX on release" that is how much the CINEMAS took, the Studio only sees about 40-60% of the ticket price. So the movie took $42 million the studio probably only saw $25 Million, it will make more on DVD sales..about 40% of the quoted home market sales and more on streaming/syndication but the money and percentages drop quite significantly. On the plus side the studio can hope to make some extra money through merchandising...Starwars only made $2 Billion at the box office, the merchandising total current stands somewhere around $32 Billion. As @System_Retro correctly states..for cinematic release the standard ratio is 2.5 the stated budget to allow for the above.

These examples move the goalposts a little, no? Boondock Saints was from that weird period where a few ambitious films with bankable actors went directly to DVD, so it didn’t get the theatrical release to fetch the box office cash. Terminator and Godzilla are major franchises, so studios aren’t dissuaded because of one flop entry. The Highlander is a little odd. It flopped initially, but was a sleeper hit in home video and cable reruns. That’s not the unusual part, though. A few films have gotten sequels based on the strength of post box office success. 1980s and 90s franchises typically got sequels until they ran out of gas. The odd thing about Highlander is that usually sequels from that time got made, but studios would shave the budgets till law of diminishing returns caught up and audiences ignored them. Highlander sequels got bigger budgets than the first one despite unenthusiastic gate receipts. Or at least it sounds odd. But then , a “flop” or “bad movie” can make more money long term than a hit. The reported return doesn’t always parse out home video, tv replays, overseas tv, merchandise licensing, and streaming platform leases. All of which don’t dump a fast bundle of cash, but the nickels and dimes add up.
@pm-55654 ай бұрын
Calling The Boondock Saints a flop is doing both movie history and the reason why it got such a limited theatrical release a great disservice, if it's due to ignorance then do better but if it's due to neglect then stop doing at all because people that callous who willingly spread misinformation do not deserve a platform. The movie was boycotted and still became a huge success despite the "higher powers" trying to cancel it because it's a great movie, hence why it made total sense for there to be a sequel. Really don't take a genius nor an amount of significant research to know this but being a channel that attempts to share (or even alter it seems) the history of movies there's no way you didn't know what happened to this movie in particular and why calling it a flop is inherently a calculated error given that you're well aware that its release was sabotaged from the start.

I'm not a fan of the two films that followed, and I didn't even watch anymore after that I haven't seen Salvation or Genisys, but I thought Dark Fate was better than Rise of the Machines, but I understand why people hate it for killing off John Conner. I do have the extended special edition of Judgment Day with the original ending wrapping everything up, I'm a bit surprised that people hating anything afrer don't just stuck with that I enjoyed the Blade Runner flicks, I even saw the second film at the theater, for the first film my introduction was VHS My brother showed me Boondock Saints, it has Indiana Jones (Sean Patrick Flannery), but I haven't seen the sequel I enjoyed both Hellboy movies, so if the sequel didn't do too well on video, well how is a remake a better chance to take than another sequel I enjoyed Riddick more than Chronicles of Riddick, and I just love Katee Sackhoff 😍, "So Say We All" So if a flop gets a sequel, is the sequel ever contractually obligated, "a contract is a contract!" Making $387 million at the box office doesn't mean the producers took home that much. They get 40-60% of the box office take depending on what country and how long it's been in theaters. They will only get around 25% of the China box office as well. The 200 million doesn't include marketing either which could be 75-100 million. So yeah, it would be considered a flop.
