10 Footballers Who Fell Off In Their Prime
From hero to zero, these footballers were once at the top of their game but fell off in a spectacular fashion. Some retired early, some moved to obscure leagues, and some just couldn't keep up with the pace of the game. Let's take a look at some of the biggest superstar footballers who fell off in their prime.

Alexis Sanchez during his time at Arsenal was one of the best players in the premier league. His skills and goal-scoring abilities stood out and he carried Arsenal for many seasons. He wanted to leave the club because he felt like he was too big for Arsenal's ambitions he wanted to play champions league football and compete for big trophies. That's part of why he went to Manchester United and he was on such a big salary. He failed to replicate his Arsenal form there as a mix of injuries and poor form affected his time there and his performances were unconvincing even though he was getting such a big salary there yet there was a return in terms of performance and contributions from the player. At Inter Milan, things didn't improve as Alexis Sanchez was only seen as a squad player. Yes at Marseille he may be playing well but it's obvious that Alexis Sanchez is past his prime he's what 33 34 something like that.

Paul Pogba was a beast in his first stint at Juventus. Dribbling skills strength passing and long shots you name it. He had all the tools needed for a successful career and that convinced Manchester United to resign him and at the time before Neymar made that 222 million move to PSG, they broke the world record fee to bring him back. Paul Pogba showed flashes of glimpses but to be that talented and expensive you expect a lot more consistency and productivity from him. You can argue that he wasn't really being utilized properly under different managers throughout his Manchester Untied career as they didn't play to his strengths and the team as a whole was dysfunctional. At that same period he was struggling for Manchester United, Paul Pogba was at his best whenever he played for the France team. He's a world champion and his performances for the national team led to questions. "why is Paul Pogba a better player for France than Manchester United." They never got the best out of him he wasn't used properly and Manchester United were such a poorly constructed team and that can be part of why he was nowhere near his best during his time at United. His inconsistent performances led to Pogba being benched at times and was also unsettled at the club. We can talk about his performances which is understandable he had an injury ravaged spell at Manchester United. The club broke the transfer record to seal his return to Old Trafford at the time, last year he leaves Manchester United on a free for the second time in his career. This transfer was so bad for both the club and player, and he leaving was great for the club but for the player it was supposed to work but things have gotten worse after his United departure. Paul Pogba returns to Juventus there was a sense of optimism that this return will help him reproduce his best form. He's not played much as injuries have affected him big time and it's gotten so bad that the last time he started a competitive game for either club or country was around this time 12 months ago. If he doesn't replicate his best form at Juventus his time at the top is done and he's still only 30. Paul Pogba's transfer to Manchester United was poor footballing business by the club once again because you paid 105 million for him and then he leaves your club on a free for the second time. Over the years, when it comes to big money transfers they've gotten it so so wrong. Paul Pogba should've stayed at Juventus because he would be a club legend and cement his legacy at club level particularly if he helped them win the champions league since he already played in a champions league final before moving to United and he won the World Cup as well. Paul Pogba had everything to become one of the greatest players of all time but because of poor decision making in his career he was short of his potential and his career would've been different had he stayed at Juventus because right now with that talent and ability he has Paul Pogba should be playing for Real Madrid, Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool etc but he's on a Juventus team that is not the same team it was during his first stint at the club it's an average team.

The decline of Dele Alli is an example of how hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. A couple of years ago, Dele Alli enjoyed a rise to the top for Tottenham and England and now his stock has fallen off massively. The end of his time at Spurs, he struggled for game time at times wasn't even in the squad and was sort of confidence whenever he played and injuries didn't help either. At Everton, the player didn't get a kick of a football on a team that is fighting to survive in the premier league and at Beskitas things have gotten worse for Dele. He was banished from their first team squad and now at just 27 when he returns to Everton, he's at an uncertain stage in his career. I don't know if they want him back and can he reignite his career under Sean Dyche and will he want him in his plans next season. Right now, Dele Alli is a lost man right now his problems are more mental than physical because he's lacking confidence in his game and he's no longer good enough to play in the premier league. People can say his decline started under Jose Mourinho even before Poch got sacked he was showing signs of regressing so he's been on the decline for a while. Jose Mourinho was right about Dele Alli and it shows that talent alone isn't gonna cut it in football as putting in the work that'll get you closer to reaching your potential. Dele Alli is 27 years old, and with what he showed earlier in his career, he should be one of the first names on the team sheet for England under Gareth Southgate but right now his career is opposite and we don't know his next move and how he can get his career back on track.

Eden Hazard made the move to Real Madrid at the wrong time because before making that move, he had his best ever season individually for Chelsea he literally carried them in his last season for the club. He impressed with his technique dribbling goals and assists and Real Madrid were hoping that Eden Hazard would make an immediate impact at the club. However they were wrong as his time at Real Madrid has been plagued by injuries and even when healthy his lack of fitness has affected his on field performances as well. All of this has contributed to Hazard having a sub role now. It's gotten to the point where even his manager Carlo Ancelotti doesn't sub him off the bench in majority of the games. He doesn't play football anymore and how can someone who's that good of a player be in this type of situation in his career where Ancelotti won't even bring him on. Eden Hazard is showing no signs of revitalizing his career anytime soon and he looks closer to retirement right now than returning to his best and that's just how badly this Real Madrid move has affected his career. He finally won the champions league but with the money they paid for him he was supposed to deliver in Europe too. Let's not act like Eden Hazard's lack of game time has been a problem for him this season, he was a big transfer and in 4 years he hasn't kicked a ball. Financially, he's getting paid more than anyone on his team and he simply warms the bench every game and as a Real Madrid player, he still hasn't played a single minute against Barcelona. If he stayed at Chelsea for 2 or 3 more years, his career would be a different story, he has just fallen off big time after joining Real Madrid.

Samuel Umtiti didn't enjoy some luck in his career. In the short run, not having surgery on his knee was right as he won a World Cup and at the time was one of the best center backs in world football. In the long term, he has seen his career hampered by injuries and didn't feature very much for Barcelona. The club have tried to offload him for years, he's on loan but technically Samuel Umtiti is still a Barcelona player since no club is willing to take him on a permanent deal.

Philippe Coutinho was a terrible fit for Barcelona. At Liverpool he was outstanding his dribbling, skills, shooting and playmaking he was looking like the player who would replace Neymar in the attack. Barcelona never got them best out of him and Coutinho looked lost. He was the star player at Liverpool but at Barca he was another player and they never found his best position. Lionel Messi was the one who did all the creating all the work and Coutinho played out of position. His best performance in a Barcelona shirt came when he was on loan at Bayern Munich during that 8-2 game when he scored 2 goals and gave 1 assist off the bench. At Aston Villa, it was a chance for Philippe Coutinho to reignite his career but even at Villa, he's failed to reproduce his best level. Aston Villa could look to offload him this summer and he might return to Brazil because at the top he's finished been done for a while. Jurgen Klopp warned him that if he left to join Barcelona, he would become another player. Philippe Coutinho just like Eden Hazard since his move to Real Madrid have proven that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Just imagine if he stayed at Liverpool, he would've been a club legend but ruined his career by going to Barcelona.

Whatever we think of this player yea he's extremely talented, but in reality Mesut Ozil didn't really reach his full potential. At Real Madrid he was something else 20 assists in 3 straight seasons he was a playmaking machine basically what he was doing back then it's literally what Kevin De Bruyne does now and has done it with regularity at Manchester City for years. At Arsenal he was still a talented player and he showed his ability the reason why he didn't live up to his potential he lacked consistency there. He played great in most games but in others including against some big teams, he went missing at times and a player of his ability you expect a lot more from Mesut Ozil since at the time he was their best player talentwise and was a World Cup winner. Towards the end of his time at Arsenal, he was a bench warmer and half of time he wasn't even in the Arsenal squad. Now he recently announced his retirement from professional football altogether at just 34 when you got his former teammate Luka Modric still at top level even at 37 3 years younger than Modric and even Karim Benzema who's around the same age as him recently won a Ballon Dor. Mesut Ozil had a successful career individual wise but he didn't have the consistency or longevity at the highest level and things would be a lot different for him had he stayed at Real Madrid but after the arrival of Gareth Bale the club was happy to let Ozil go. He never won the champions league but at least he's a World champion. He had a great career and you can have all the talent in the world but you have to show it with consistency and he had around 200 assists in his career which is great but it still seems like Mesut Ozil's potential was unfulfilled.

Mario Balotelli was simply overrated. Someone who was so promising and talented as a player didn't reach the heights people expected of him. He had a difficult character and he was one crazy player. Throughout his career, he's gone from club to club and he's gone nowhere I don't know where he plays right now.

For some players who make the big money move takes a toll on their mental health as they try to live up to the price tags and not being able to do what they did best,, let’s say they try tooo hard to justify their price tag, look at other players before they get plucked up big clubs.. they play just fine and even improve because they don’t have any mental pressure to worry about and purely just focus on what they do best

I blame hazards downfall solely on ral madrid . They have to understand that each player is unique and different , not everyone like Ronaldo is training 20 hours a day .And people saying he was overweight and lazy , have to understand that ,that's how hard was even at chelsea ,he was given his freedom and played the best football at the premier league for a while ,working out hours at stretch was just not hazards thing ,and real forced him to do it ,resulting in him getting injured time and again . And even when he recovered he is rarely used , atleast he should be allowed 30mins each game and if he does not show potential then don't use him ,but atleast give him a chance . Ancelloti wasted a talent like hazard .

These players are lightweights. They are supposed to be players of skill but like Joe Cole have been overhyped by Agents and pundits probably in their employ. Fact is soon the question of stock price fixing is going to be brought up asd you can not sell a club when you don't know the true value of the stock, which in football is players worth and these players worth was fake.

James Rodriguez was always an overrated player. He had talent but he's not that good. Real Madrid after the 2014 World Cup paid so much money for him and because of how well he played everyone was hyping him up acting like he was world class. He never reached his potential since Zidane benched him sent him out on loan and when Zidane came back Rodriguez was never in his plans. We often forget that his first season at Real Madrid was his best ever in a Madrid shirt. 3 years later, he's went from club to club trying revive his career and hasn't been successful at that either. Now at the age of 31, James Rodriguez is a free agent and who knows what the player would've been in his career without that big money move to Real Madrid.
