I imagine Boys Don't Cry will be on a future list. And Blue Valentine feels so real and observant, with the contrast of the Honeymoon phase compared to the waning days where one partner is clearly not interested anymore, and we all know the signifiers of both in others', and our own, personal relationships.

The Nightingale. It's a masterpiece, I highly recommend it to everyone, but I let them know that parts of it are extremely hard to watch. Once again your content is so creative! Two great movies I'll never watch again: Robert Eggers's The Witch and Polanski's Rosemary's Baby (I had terrible nightmares after watch them, they both scared the hell out of me). I'd watch The Father again if I have to see it with somebody else, but I completly understand your point, in some ways it's a horror movie. I agree 100% with you on Uncut Gems. Blue Valentine is actually one of my all time favorites even though is heartbreaking and sad I've seen it a couple of times. Here in Brazil they translated the movie for something like "dating forever", like it was something really romantic and they released on Valentine's Day, so can you imagine all the couples in love going to cinema and watching this, they felt so frustated! hehe

I love your videos and always get such great ideas of things to watch from you. I saw 15 minutes of A Clockwork Orange and will NEVER watch the rest of it. I am not easily disturbed by movies, but that 15 minutes, along with other clips I have seen, is all I ever need of this movie. I would watch Requiem for a Dream 10 times in a row before watching Clockwork Orange. The movie that I could only watch once is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. It was just heart wrnching for me. I loved the characters so much that I felt what was happening to them. I had the same reaction to reading the book--only once.

What a great topic and a great list! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way about certain undeniably great movies. First and Last Man - Boggling in its Cerebral reach. A must see but it took all I had to fully grasp it. October Sky - The very end is so deeply moving I exploded into tears. Ben Hur (Charalton Heston) - Can't begin to explain... Star Trek TNG - The Inner Light - A mans life with a loving wife and cherished children suddenly gone. Martyrs - Much more than a blood soaked torture fest. The most wrenching I've seen. My soul had to clench it, but was sufficiently infused in one viewing. Just one. What our Father demands. (All of these are mandatory, but I'm 64. Possible generational impact differentials.)

I watched The Elephant Man as a nine year old and felt like I was thrown into a lions den. It was the most heartbreaking movie I’d ever seen (in all of my nine years of existence). Forget when I cried my eyes out during Puff the Magic Dragon or when the horse died in the swamp of sadness in The Neverending Story, this was pure torture. I was on the verge of tears the entire time because it was based on a true story and I simply couldn’t believe people could be that cruel. It shattered my innocence and I felt let down by humanity, pretty dramatic for a little kid to be feeling these emotions, but I simply never thought adults could be so heartless. I’ve never wanted to revisit the film, despite its acclaim. Try sitting through a film with a lump in your throat for the majority of the film because you’re too embarrassed to break out in tears. Absolute emotional torture. Never again. The other was The Bicycle Thief. We had to view it for class. Had no idea a film could be so simple yet so heartbreaking. It ripped my soul to pieces. I’m too sensitive. Thanks to those two experiences, I’ll never watch Come and See, Grave of the Fireflies, Benny’s Video. I zapped La Ceremonie from memory, and I’m even afraid to watch Zone of Interest.

Requiem for a Dream is my #1 favorite movie. It was the merciless editing in this movie that inspired me to become a professional video editor. Whenever I mention that this is my favorite movie people go: what, like, watched-it-multiple-times kind of favorite? And yeah, over the years I've watched it about 10 times I think? And even though I know exactly what to expect, its emotional impact stays the same each and every re-watch. Remarkable.

"Sublime" (2007), "Jacob's Ladder" (1990), & "Erasurehead" (1977) are three absolute masterpieces that fall into this category for me. I watched them all multiple times years ago, but as much as I truly love all three films I have no real interest in sitting through them again today. Well, with maybe one exception... Sublime is probably the lesser known of the bunch here, but it's such a brilliantly disturbing film! Tom Cavanaugh turned in a truly remarkable performance (who knew?!), & it still kind of baffles me that it hasn't become a legendary-level cult classic.

As soon as I saw the title of this video, the 1st movie the popped into my head was Gaspar Noé's Irreversible. Phenomenal film making, but the intensity & graphic nature of the narrative, coupled with a soundtrack DESIGNED to make the viewer uncomfortable, is just too much for a 2nd viewing (so far). No way I could deprive myself of a Kubrick movie forever. Except for his early works Killer's Kiss & Fear & Desire, I MUST see his entire catalog yearly. My wife & I's first movie we saw at home while dating was Full Metal Jacket, so we've probably seen it together now 22 times! Speaking of the wife we both loved Blue Valentine when it hit the theaters, and I bought the Blu-ray the day it came out. Still haven't convinced her to watch it again!

Ooooh, this video is SO close to my heart because I loooove a lot of movies that I don't pretend watching again (maybe some scenes but not the whole movie) because they are 1) way too scary/uncomfortable for me 2) they make me feel extremely sad 3) I love them and I appreciate them in the moment but apparently not enough to want to revisit them. From your list: A Clockwork Orange, Requiem for a Dream and 12 Years a Slave I've never seen Uncut Gems and Funny Games, precisely because my brother told me: "With your anxiety? Mmm, maybe not" 😅 A movie that traumatized me for LIFE (and I'm kinda grateful that my mind protected me so I don't remember much, just that I felt a lot of anguish) is IRREVERSIBLE. Also, I loooove Oldboy (the original one of course) but no thank you, I won't watch it again, not in the near future 😆same with: Blue Velvet, Nocturnal Animals (Aaron Taylor-Johnson character made me feel sooo uncomfortable), Isle of Dogs, First Reformed, Roma, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Werk ohne Autor (Never Look Away)... Cinema Paradiso!!! What a masterpiece BUT I watched it twice and by the end I was sobbing, both times... There must be a lot more but I can't remember right now 🤷🏻‍♀

To get the war out of the way: The Pianist and Come and See. (With immediate reaction of “How do I live now that I’ve seen it”) But there was a movie with Owen Wilson. No Escape. Now. Idk if it a great movie and whether it belongs on this list. I don’t remember. 😆 All I can remember is that there was a movie and I had anxiety attack every 5 minutes. To the point of whimpering. 😅 It probably wasn’t bad cause I never wanted to leave the theater. I have so many questions about this movie that would be easily answered by rewatching it. But nope. These are my favorite type of lists because most titles people place in this specific category are usually ones that are all-time favorite films of mine that I love to rewatch. I see many of them on your list, Marianna. Terrific choices! I live for emotionally tough dramas that depict real life problems. The more depressing, the better. It's one way in which I have processed my own struggles in the past. That said, my version of this list only contains two films, Cannibal Holocaust and Salo: 120 Days of Sodom. Though, I hesitate to actually call either one GREAT, both are just extremely effective at what they set out to do. I never want any part of them again.

Even though I understand your view and think you had great picks, I usually want to go back to many of these types of films. I think there are similarities between the fright you feel from seeing a horror film and a movie that make you cry. Or right out distributing scenes. It is all "negative" feelings that you have to handle. Personally I sometimes want experience these feelings again. In a "controlled environment". To mention an older film I haven't re-watched for these reasons I must mention Come and See. I know it's a Russian movie so I understand if you feel it is inappropriate to mention it. But that had simular effect on me as you felt for Grave of the Fireflies. A newer movie is Gaspar Noes Vortex that sort of combines both The Father and Hanekes Amour. It's still a great work of art with great acting and make good use of two continuous perspectives.

Teens should honestly be watching this in schools, even if just to see a portrait of what addiction can look like, how easily you can slip into it, and that even addicts deserve empathy too.

As soon as I saw this topic come up, I thought of four movies. You it hit two, Son of Saul and Grave of the Fireflies. The Stoning of Soraya M. and Lilya 4 Ever are two others. I have more, but those were the first ones that came to mind.

Grave of the fireflies I think is on my list as well. A remarkable movie but I cried from the beginning to the end and could not open my eyes the next day, felt like shit for a week at least and sometimes burst into tears again. A painful experience of an amazing masterpiece. Also, have not tried but I am pretty sure I cannot watch schindler's list again.

Leaving Las Vegas (Depressing as hell. And I've seen people like Nick Cage in this movie), Requiem For A Dream (I'm with you here) , Full Metal Jacket doesn't thrill me to watch again anytime soon. I can sometimes take an extra viewing of an extraordinarily dark film if it is really a philosophical work of art. So A Clockwork Orange I most likely will see again. Likewise the darkest film I've ever seen Pasolini's Salo. I actually own the Criterion edition of it and have seen it in the theatres twice! And when I am done I feel like I have been concussed and lie splattered across the asphalt on a busy street. Yet I will probably watch it again sometime. Why? To try to understand the depth of what he is getting at. I watch this with the same trepidation that I bring to reading the works of Georges Bataille. But since part of my mission in life is to deal with the dark stuff in order to bring a little light to others I take that as part of the price. But Marianna what about Иди и смотри? That's a film I have seen twice, once in the theatre, and I recently picked up a BluRay but I have to approach it in the right mood. (Not a Saturday morning!) I have to build up to it. Oddly enough one film that touched a nerve in me that I haven't quite had the wherewithal to return to, though I own a copy is The Strangers. Most horror films don't do this to me. But for some reason this one does. And Martyrs? Yes I will will watch that again! Thanks for the video Marianna. It prompted many thoughts.

I've been catching up on documentaries lately, and some of mine would be Grizzly Man and Blackfish. Very important documentaries about our relationship with nature, utterly blood-curdling even when it doesn't show you the full picture... the ending of Grizzly Man, just... damn.

definitely agree with A Clockwork Orange and Requiem for a Dream. I watched Requiem with some others, and afterwards we watched cartoons as a way to try lighten up lol. I read Leaving Las Vegas and it was such a heavy book I haven't been able to get myself to watch the movie. But I have a feeling it would fit in with this category as well.

@@ImpressionBlend i think the film is great, but i hate the main character's motivations. her actions have so many consequences for others that i can't feel any sympathy for her. her fate is sad and tragic, but no justification and that's what i ultimately have problems with. As I said, it's a great film, but I won't watch it again.

So avoid watching depressing crap. Duh. For 50 years (from 1927 to 1977) the film academy was so frightened of comedy (the REAL proof of ultimate acting skill) that it never awarded one with an Oscar for best picture until Annie Hall, which speaks volumes.

Great list, and I agree with all of the choices in there, though there are a few movies I have not seen personally. I would add The Joker. Towards the end of that movie, I was just waiting for it to end so that I could leave the theatre. It was so brutal, so bleak, so nihilistic, and so void of any glimmer of hope that I just spent the rest of the week in a depressed funk. It has been compared to Taxi Driver but at least that movie had some hope and light in it. The Joker did not. Also, Lilya 4 Ever. Great movie, but my god it gutted me.

First time watching this channel. I love this topic! The movie I don't think I can bring myself to watch again is "Dancer in the Dark". I don't know if it was because I already was a big fan of Bjork growing up or it was just a phenomenal performance. It was just heartbreaking. I’ll almost always watch anything great more than once, however disturbing. Just this year, I watched Threads for the first time and watched it again a week later. The only one of these (among those I’ve seen) about which I felt similar to you was Requiem for a Dream. Still only seen it once, more than 20 years ago. Gave away my DVD. A terrific piece of craftsmanship, but harrowing AF. One of my favorite film scores, though.

Like Crazy (2012) is one I can never watch again for a lot of reasons. It’s probably a weird choice, but I could never see myself rewatching this and it’s been nearly a decade since I watched it and I still know exactly how it makes me feel and I’d rather not think about how I said I’d never let myself be like the main characters and still ended up like them. Beyond that I find it challenging to watch any Anton Yelchin movies still to this day.

Requiem For A Dream Clockwork Orange - I think the last time I watched it, the old droog nearly drowning Alex was just too much to take. Not to mention the drops in the propped-open eyes. Not to mention the...well, there are other scenes as well. The Father was so good. And it hits too close to the bone, as we're dealing with that with my father-in-law. The only one on this list that I can think of at the moment is one you turned me onto, "I'm Thinking of Ending Things." I thought about it a lot the week afterwards, but I can't ever see myself watching that one again, even watching it for the subtle changes.

Marianna! Have you watched “Barbarian” yet? Premiered tonight in my area. Get to a theatre now! It was terrifyingly dark, I’ve not seen anything like that in quite some time. Still processing but man, that one’s going to leave a mark. Go in without watching any reviews if you can. I went in not knowing what to expect and it was horror and tension the whole ride through. I’d LOOOOOVE to hear your thoughts on this one. I wish I could compare to other horror out there but this one’s in a league of its own. Enjoy! 😱

One of my fav movies ever is requiem for a dream and I've seen it so many times but it's Def one where I fully understand why most people can only watch it once, if they can even make it through it once. Clockwork orange is also one of my fav movies and it is just a masterpiece that ask some important and fascinating questions that don't have any easy answers. I'm just very used to and I guess gravitated to depressing or dark movies. Idk why. I actually can't think of a movie that I loved but wouldn't ever watch again. The only thing close to that is probably a movie called 'spun'. It's a movie about some meth addicts. There's almost no story really but I used to be addicted to methamphetamines and watching that movie is just so hard to watch for a recovering or non using addict of methamphetamine cuz of how its shot and how its edited and the acting. It makes you almost want to use again. Probably doesn't make any non addict ever want to use but for a recovering addict of meth it does. It's hard to describe how it would have that affect because it definitely doesn't make meth look good.

Largely agree with the films presented here, although I'll always rewatch a Kubrick film. A few films I have no intention of watching a second time include Martyrs (and probably most of the New French Extremity films), Antichrist (maybe quite a few Lars von Trier films, in fact!), Climax, Cannibal Holocaust (why did I even watch that a first time???) and Salo

Requiem for a dream was the first thing I thought of when reading the title. Clockwork Orange I hated deeply so for sure I'm not watching it again. I agree with everything you said about Uncut Gems but there's no doubt I'll see it a few more times. For some reason Full Metal Jacket didn't have that much of an impact on me. I think I might have been to young when I saw it so this one is also on the rewatch list. Unfortunately the other are still waiting in the watch list, and I think The Father will be an one time viewing. And btw I never heard of Grave of the Fireflies before. I'm super curious now

Good list. Marianna, you need to see and review a war movie called "Come and See". It's a 1985 Russian movie that depicts the atrocities of the Nazi invasion of a province of Russia. It's in the Criterion collection. The acting by the young boy that plays the lead is outstanding. Give it a watch and please review it. It might even make this list.
