I love that too. Best one I played like that recently was Little Noah: Scion of Paradise. I love roguelike games overall, but the aesthetic and overall gameplay of it was just genuinely fun. It's not one of those "Souls-like" roguelikes, but uses roguelike mechanics in an anime like setting with a good story and fun characters. Kind of reminds me of the 90s magical girl style anime how it's written. Good stuff.

Super Adventure Island 2 is another hidden SNES gem and one of my favorite games on the system! It's a complete departure from the arcade platforming of classic Adventure Island games and is more of a Zelda II - style side scrolling action game with RPG elements and even a bit of a "Metroidvania" feel to it with the sprawling and interconnected worlds that require some backtracking as you gain new powerups and abilities.

Adventure Island is a franchise that definitely needs a "retro gaming with a modern look" revival. Maybe they could get the people at Wayforward to look into it.

One small correction; Super castlevania 4 didn't really do anything to cement the term "metroidvania" which didn't really take off until after Symphony of the Night introduced metroid-like elements. (and yes technically Castlevania 2 simons Quest did have some elements metroid used, it was more akin to an adventure or even light RPG game than a metroid game)

I have said and will say that the SNES has the most solid library of any gaming system ever. Not a total nostalgic thing either. The NES and Genesis I am very familiar with too but it is genuinely difficult for me to find that many bad games out of any I have or still do play.

Nintendo was (somewhat successfully) filtering out junk games like it always does, but developers like Square were also still putting out high-quality games. That combination hasn't really been matched; most other system either have too much junk or their best games are merely good. Granted it's rather easy to just ignore junk, but that doesn't change the fact that the junk brings down the average.

I loved Bahamut Lagoon. Unlike most tactical RPGs, it actually gives you stuff to do between battles: you can run around like a typical JRPG, talking to people and stuff, not to mention raising your dragons, which makes it less monotonous imo. It has a surreal story with some unique twists too.

Yeah buddy same shit I say lol.. Japanese gamers definitely got every rpg ever made for every system ever made, would be nice to be able to have the repertoire of games they have over there in English and not have to emulate everything. These days though hell if you didn't save all your games and systems from the past and you'll never be able to afford 80% of it now. Hence emulation is almost always needed to play a lot of the great games especially RPGS.

When i told him it was all worth over 75K he started to smile until he heard my mom come home, that happened back in 2015 so i don't even like to think about what it would all be worth now. I don't know how is a kid that I resisted taking all the posters out but they still have the posters I still have the player guides and all the little inserts.. but I sold a lot of my regular Nintendo games and Super Nintendo games like way before they got outrageous in 2020 with the prices. So I'm 42 now but yeah I kept a lot of that stuff like a geek lol and a lot of it is worth pretty good money but I'm a sentimental fool and I can't get rid of my old stuff, love it too much. Yeah they just got way too many good games in Japan that you really have to emulate because we just never got them here, so I don't feel bad about emulating it's a must-have especially these days you can't even afford to buy a regular game hell Mario and duck hunts is probably 25 30 bucks now for the NES and it was a pack in game hahaha

I had both Ninja Warriors and Robotrek growing up! I loved Robotrek's goofy sense of humour, but the crafting system was too clunky. This was pre-internet, so figuring out item combinations was literally: Try to combine item A one at a time with EVERY OTHER ITEM YOU OWN. Okay, now do the same with item B. Doesn't help the some items are one-of-a-kind (which you can't know at the time) and could be used in multiple combinations, the other item you might not get until much later (which you also can't know at the time). Still on my list of favourite games. Ninja Warriors was way better than it had any right to be. The controls, hit boxes, and difficulty scaling were actually pretty tight, and it was just a solid game start to finish.
