Home Depot has changed since I worked for them. I worked in gardening for 5 years and we did not have the authority to reduce prices for customers. We taped up the torn bag lol. We did have discounted items, but they had to be available to customers for 24 hours before employees could buy it. One year I got about 25 strands of blue Christmas tree lights for 1cent a strand. One year I bought a 250.00 ceiling fan for 35.00. The oops paint was always great.

Regarding the 50% damaged bags, not all stores will mark them down as each store is allotted a certain amount of money for markdowns. Once the threshold is met, they will no longer allow the bags to be sold at a discount.

WOW!!! Thank you Matt for the great tips and pricing at Home Depot. I shop at my local Home Depot a lot and have got many deals there. I remolded a bathroom last year and someone had bought a special ordered Vanity and when it arrive they didn't take it after all, but it was just what I wanted it was $1500 but I got it for $157 out the door. It is so beautiful and I never get deals like this but I can say I finally have. During the Pandemic the were selling 1 gallon jugs of Hand Sanitizer the "ZEP" brand for 25 cents a gallon. I bought 15 of them and gave them out to the needy in my town. You just have to be at the right place at the right time I guess. Thanks Matt for all of your help shopping for us. God Bless you....

I am a penny deal winner. During the summer 2022 looking to purchase a new bathroom vanity faucet and after looking through the selection on the shelf found one at a decent price.strolled past the clearance shelf and saw a similar styled faucet at a lower price than the one I had in my cart. Grabbed the clearance faucet and off to pay and what a surprise at the register only 1¢. I actually think it was free because I did not have the penny but the person running the self checkout supplied the penny.

My husband worked for Home Depot for over 20 years. From what I remember him telling me about the price tags and discounts was if you found something on the sales floor that was marked for a penny, then somebody goofed up, because once they mark down to a penny, they are supposed to be taken off the shelf, and either disposed of or donated. It was really sad because usually they were disposed of or at least that’s what happened at my husbands store.

Former Home Depot employee here! If you do find an item that rings up for a penny, they CAN NOT sell it to you and will remove it to be discarded. It's not that they will not let you buy it - it's an absolute CAN NOT per policies. I don't like that Matt said this is a lucky find when you can't purchase that item. The only exception I ever experienced to this rule was when a customer needed a hard to find specialty electrical breaker that HD was clearancing out and was a penny. I got with a manager to allow that customer to purchase it and save him the hassle of finding another at a different retailer.
@caitlinroseirl
@caitlinroseirl Жыл бұрын
Wanted to add that what he said about what prices end in is TRUE. A price ending in .03 is the cheapest clearance price before it goes to a penny and has to be discarded. Their clearance tags will also have a was price on it. If you're looking at their clearance rack, and a price doesn't show what it was, it is probably something that was returned to that store that they don't normally carry.

We have rental properties which we renovate and upgrade all the time. Consequently, we get to know the Home Depot folks very well and we make it a point to be pleasant with them. One of the guys that works there asked us if we use pruning sheers. We said we do. He said, "Here you go. I'd have to sell these for a penny. You can have them." Nice perk for business we have to do anyway. We also take advantage of their military discount -- which, of course, you have to have been in the military or still be serving to qualify for.

I believe in a lot of cases, you don't even have to dig up a plant and bring it in to get a refund. We were refunded more than $100 for 2 nut trees that didn't survive, without having to dig them up and bring them in, which would have been inconvenient and messy; we just showed the receipt at customer service and were given a gift card in the amount we paid. We do have a history of *not* returning several beautiful trees over the years, so they might take that into consideration.

Also, if you pay for everything with a credit card or debit card, you won't need to worry about keeping the original receipt. Everyone should set up an online account with HD. You will receive an email with the receipt and you can track your purchases there. You can also simply swipe the card you used, and the person assisting you at the return desk can pull up the receipt.

I didn't know this when I attempted a return without a receipt. What a hassle! Even though this was less than a week after the purchase, the employee insisted on refunding me a much lower price than I paid (this had never happened before). I refused, telling him to just give me back the product and I would come back with the receipt. Only then did he ask if I had paid by credit card - which I did - and he was able to document what I had paid.

The items for a Penny were marked as such to warn employees to pull them from stock. If you find something like that it will be a fight at some stores. @paulthompson7929

I’m a former Home Depot employee, so let me explain why items get discounted to $0.01. Any “penny sku” (what we call those products) are items that are being discontinued by the manufacturer. The manufacturer wants Home Depot to take those items off the shelf and throw them away. Home Depot managers get a list of products that are becoming “penny skus” well in advance so they can be taken off the shelves. It’s extremely rare you will ever find any one cent items on any shelf at ANY Home Depot. It’s not impossibly, just highly unlikely.

The closeout rack is ALWAYS worth a visit. But don't take the closeout price stickers at face value. For example, I found a 3-pack of Husky LED flashlights with a closeout price of $11, which was not bad. But actual price at the register was $3. And they are good flashlights with batteries included. The batteries in each light are Energizer Max, worth $2.50 so worth more than the price of the flashlights. They basically gave it to me for free and paid me money to take it home.

Hi, Deal Guy! 🙋🏼‍♀️ I often enthusiastically watch your other videos, but just discovered this HD video by accident. As always, well done! I've worked as a Home Depot cashier for several.years and from you i just learned a couple things I didnt know. I do want to clarify 2 points you made, however: 1) Although cashiers do have the ability to reduce the price on a purchase, it still has to be justified and not simply because someone walks in and requests $50 off because they "saw on the internet" that we can do that; that fallicy has been posted on different sites for years. And being nice to us doesnt get you discounts in itself, although we greatly appreciate it!! Being a difficult, rude, demanding, unpleasant customer will, however, generally get less favors in any store and in life in general, so yeah, be nice to employees everywhere!!! 2) The discounts for superficially damaged items, open packages, damaged boxes, holes in bags of concrete, mulch, pebbles, etc., have been tightened up out of necessity because far too many people would open a package, kick a dent in an appliance, poke a hole in a bag of mulch, etc and then bring it to the register expecting a price reduction. I saw a reply you made to a comment which mentioned this problem, and you said something about there being many cameras in HD and that therefore it was a bad idea to rip a hole in a bag. Isn't it also simply WRONG? More people than you'd think try that and we no longer give all those discounts so easily because of the seemingly endless ways people create to steal, scam, and perform acts of fraud against Home Depot and other stores. All that said, thanks, Deal Guy, for all you do!

I often seek out open box/slightly damaged boxes for certain items, like nails/screws etc. I may only need a smaller number of them to complete a certain job, and if I can pass those savings on to my clients, then it is better for all involved. Plus, sometimes I don't want to have a lot of excess items in my shed that I won't be using for a long time. I have also been known to buy open box/returned items, like faucets. When I only need one part to make a repair or replacement, I often look for a match, or one with parts that I can use. You can not always buy a certain stand alone partn from the plumbing aisle. So on one hand it makes me upset that other people are stealing from the store and making the rest of us pay for their dirty deeds through higher price offsets, and on the other hand I can take advantage of certain instances. No, not all damaged packages are due to theft. Many times there are incidents and packages and/or products are damaged.

Your videos should be shown in classrooms, to show kids how to find deals and save money, really. Thanks for the deal alerts, and that rental thing, I saw a couple items I need and was holding off on because of the price. Thanks Mr. Granite! Love to the family!

I'm glad they offer a military discount although you are correct it's a little too low and shouldn't have a cap. It also works for online orders too, have used it for several purchases there, every little bit counts! Thanks for doing these vids, helpful tips and suggestions as always.

Hey Matt, love the videos!!! Real quick, for the garden center replacement/refund policy… If you pay Credit Card OR have Home Depot account, they can look it up without receipt … BUT - BE AWARE, they require the original container… no container, no refund/replacement. It’s happened to me and they showed me the policy. 😞
