The 10th episode of RIO's "How To" series, is presented by RIO ambassador Russ Miller. In this episode, Russ shows numerous ways to fish a streamer while wading along the bank of a river; each different from the rest, and when applied to a day on the river, will give you the maximum chance of catching a fish.
Russ's tips and great information takes the mystery out of this increasingly popular style of river fishing.
RIO's "How To" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish, or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique.
These invaluable lessons for the fly fisher are packed with information and top tips, and each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

Streamers are my favorite way to fish by far because they work so well. I also love to see fish chase and roll on your fly aggressively. When a hatch is going and most people are using the old saying "There is a rise, tie on your dries" I go to a streamer. The larger fish will start to target the little fish that are shooting up to eat the hatch and then trying to get back to their holding spot on the bottom. I use heavy beaded streamers with long tails to really exaggerate their darting action on aggressive strips. When the bite slows switch to unweighted soft hackles to catch the remaining fish. They still hit aggressively so be careful not to snap your line on the take.

It’s taken the last few years to get this final challenge down. I’m now doing well with it and yes, the average catch is larger. I spent my last lesson with a guide because I knew this guide in particular was a very good streamer. Worth every penny. Spent hours and hours by myself afterwards....a great video. After working with others....I must say you are well versed and skilled at this. Thank you.

Been streamer fishing for 50 years. Great job. Covered it well. Nice fish! *For the idiots who don't know the difference, the exact same techniques are used when on a dry bank. Just roll cast if there are obstructions behind you.

I get the criticism others made, but thought the same thing. As a fly fishing newb, what makes these "streamers"? The fact that he's using two? The fact the fly tail extends beyond the hook? Most thing's I've seen in the store called streamers are longer, almost worm like.

Ted: Not being "idiots" as you suggest , most of us do know the difference. Fishing from the "bank" is exactly that. Fishing "along" the bank is also exactly that. The point is to say what you mean and mean what you say. I also have been fishing for more than 50 years.

I guess David, it may be a matter of terminology. To a lifelong "FLY-fisherman" There is "bank" fishing, and "boat" fishing. My point was that there is a lot to be learned from this video. Without unnecessary criticism, a novice would take it more seriously. I watch a ton of these. I would say most deserve some sort of criticism, but not this one. It is spot on. If a beginner watches this video he could learn a few things it took me years to learn.

Kevin; What constitutes a streamer is a combination of the "Pattern" used while tying, also the method of "presentation" When presenting most streamers, you are trying to emulate a small living creature, like a sculpin or very small fish, swimming, or passing through an area (usually in a river or stream) where a fish would likely take the opportunity and strike it! The cool thing about fishing two hooks is there is double the "time in area" of opportunity. Also something about it increases your chances, like the fish might think bottom hook is is chasing down the top hook and it helps the fish decide weather to strike. Catching a fish on the top hook can sometimes give you a tangle, but the real thrill is when you hook a fish on both hooks. Just be careful and make sure it is legal to fish two hooks in the area you are fishing. Give it a try! It's fun, and IMO a bit easier than most types of fly-fishing. This video is right on, and Russ is a good fisherman. A lot to learn here.

I like the idea of tying the dropper off of the tag end of the triple surgeons knot instead of the bend of the hook. I’m curious about the knot used to tie the flies, clinch or non slip loop?
@RIOPRODUCTS
@RIOPRODUCTS 5 жыл бұрын
Clinch is fine, but most of the time we use fly clips, so the droppers don't shorten when changing flies. You need a long dropper to use a non-slip loop knot!

Hi, thanks for the video. So you have sink tip, 3x leader, with 1x tippet... Shouldn't it be 1x leader (bigger) and 3x tipper (smaller)? (fly fishing newbie asking)

It's not an easy answer. When streaming you don't need your line to taper. Since you want your line to sink. Personally I have no experience with sinking lines. I use floating line; tapered leader with tippet.

I got the most fishes on streamers, in lakes, creeks, or at the coast. Mostly let it drift or retriev it slow with good stops in lakes. Its also really recommendable to wait till the fly turned after a drift and retriev a couple times, never had an bite while going against the current though. You really cant miss the bites, its like a lightning hitting the rod 😋 Could you explain how you do the loops while retrieving? I tried that a lot but alsways end up with tangled line 😅

Am I the only fisherman that married a woman that doesn't like to fish or like the taste of fish? I spent age 24 -38 hiking and Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada Mountains with just my German Shepherd. Why I got married to a woman that doesn't like to do either has been the most puzzling thing I've ever done in my life. At first I thought it would be my escape if married life wasn't the best but after my wife saved my life multiple times over the past 12 years I understand why. I would surely be fishing the Lakes and Rivers in the skies without her. Due to Diabetes I don't get the chance to spend time on the Rivers as I want too, I'm addicted to insulin 3+ times a day. It's not easy getting back to my favorite fishing holes not just because of the doctors appointments and medication but because of cost. Another is I don't live close enough to travel to them in one day anymore which really sucks. After spending every weekend or close for 14 years getting a chance to go one week a year is as depressing as it it enjoyable. Seems I spend 51 weeks a year thinking about the one I might have if the weather is good. For this reason I love these Fly Fishing videos! Thank All of you for sharing what I love!

Second you connect the stout leader with a bit 1X tippet with a blood knot, how long is this 1X tippet? And the tag is also 1X tippet or different diameter ? And how long eproximetely is the tag? Thanks for your message, and for watching the video. Since we filmed that we have actually developed a streamer leader that is much better than chopping one down. It is called the Big Nasty leader, and that's all we use for streamers now. Simply tie a streamer on to this (we mostly use the 1X), and then a tag end to that fly. Something slightly lighter, and for us usually 2X. Does that help? www.rioproducts.com/products/big-nasty-leader

@@dmitrijsstupins9624 we don't make this as thin as a 1X. The material used to make a stiffer leader like this has a different diameter to strength ratio. The thinnest we make is .012", which doesn't make the X scale. If it did, it would be a minus 1X. That leader is 10lb. The 16lb is 0.16", and the 20lb is .018"

Usually you want the heavier fly on the very end of your leader, otherwise it could collapse the turnover if the heavier fly is the cone closest to the line.

I love it! "One for you"," and two for me" is my Streamer fishing motto :) Something else, the action is better with the bigger or heavier hook at the bottom, but I sometimes make the bottom hook 2 or 3 sizes bigger. Not sure, but I think is emulates a small fish chasing the even smaller one and that can excite a trout?

The line used was RIO's 24ft Sink tip line. The front end is heavy and dense as there is 24ft of sinking material at the front and it is designed to get down and cast large flies.
