Your mention of the "whistling language" was most welcome. Over the years, I have told my students about it. Although the project would probably exceed even your noble efforts to tell people about fascinating things, I might suggest that you one day offer a "10 Facts" (or 20 or 30) on languages. Many wonderful languages are dying or have already died in just my lifetime, and some of them carried unique ways of communicating the human experience that are worth sharing. Aside from that sad aspect of languages, all manner of other arcane but interesting facts could be recounted for your audience of intellectually curious viewers (like the languages that have no known, related languages nearby; or like the ancient languages that carried ways of expressing state of being in action, which makes modern translations rather distorted). Anyway, your videos are highly enjoyable for this old professor. May you live a long life and produce many, many more of these gems on KZfaq.

The coma segment is the scary one. You said waking up from a 40 year coma would be terrifying, I think being conscious during that time is worse. I had a girlfriend a long time ago and she was in a diabetic coma for a few months when she was a teen. She mentioned she was conscious the entire time. Couldn't move, body paralyzed, went through her normal awake and sleep cycles. Imagine that for 42 years!

Wow! The noise the crickets make when slowed down, I can understand why it's called 'God's orchestra'. It's really one of the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard. \in our busy ever rushing here and there lives it makes me wonder how much more of natures gifts we miss. It's such a shame we are turning our beautiful planet into a huge never ending concrete jungle. There will come a time I think but hope I'm wrong when all we have to teach children about how our beautiful planet used to look like will be to show them video clips and photos of nature. It makes it sound like an awful thing with no green places left, but just think about how our ever growing population, the amount of 'green belt' that's being stripped away to build more and more housing.

+Lin Joy Cricket chorus was altered to make a musical soundtrack. It definitely does not sound like that naturally at all. It sounds like anything else that is slowed down: weird and a little creepy. I hope this doesn't sound pointlessly mean like Mr. Playstation Wins/fails. I thought it sounded beautiful too so I researched it and was disappointed at what I found.

I can't get over the crickets!! That's so incredible. I always wonder what animals can understand music and if they enjoy the same harmonies as us. Different cultures have different harmonies and even different octaves which makes me wonder, does our music sounds like gibberish to my dog or does she like it? Just fascinating.

Being a linguist, I'm obligated, if not programmed to like the El Silbo one the most. As soon as you started talking about the variety of language sounds, I had a hunch you were going to go for that one! Also, Dale, check to see what's going on at 2:41. There seems to be a skip. Loved this video, too!
@thinkfact
@thinkfact 9 жыл бұрын
weskos I thought some people would like that language, it is extremely unique. It doesn't so much skip It was me trying to fix an awkward sound that happened in during filming. For some reason there was a beep, and by the time I found it there's already a day or two after filming and I couldn't reshoot it.

Veena Chatterjee I don't think so. It is true: almost everybody is technically able to write and design his or her own webpage. But the fact that you could do it if you looked it up/did it sometimes does not imply that you actually will use or even get this knowledge. (Usually people who don't need to get very specific features to their sites use templates for creating them and therefore don't need to know all the details).

The cricket things is oddly beautiful. The girl in the coma was just depressing she lived most of her life asleep she never truly got to live past 16 that just bums me out and what's worse is her mom had to watch as her daughter's life was wasting away. But the thing about hyenas being more related closely to cats then dogs and walruses being a relative to dogs was kind of funny

I commented to my father and he said that it was widely used in Puerto Rico were I am from. In fact number 3 about metals there is a reason door knobs are usually brass or silver or a combination that makes up nickel. They all have this anti-bacterial properties on their own so that if someone uses the door knob disinfected immediately just by the nature of the molecules in the brass silver or nickel. The same can be said for bathroom fixtures or taps on the sink Another reason you might see someone giving a new baby gift from Tiffany as a Silverspoon (antibacterial.)

You did the science of love video. You should do science of laughter, comedy, funny,... Also science of sleep: we all know it's necessary for cognitive functioning, and it's necessary for memory reconsolidation, and death will ultimately occur without it like a rare genetic disease, and other sleep disorders, but the real reason death occurs from lack of sleep would be organ failure, like the kidneys, then you talk more about the renal failure, and you segue from one topic to another just like Vsauce does. You have to be very creative to think like Michael, and continue to "question everything."

Just subscribed! Your videos are interesting and entertaining. My favorite is the crickets as well - I remember hearing that recoding for the first time about a year ago and it just blew my mind. So otherworldly, just beautiful.

I loved the last fact about dogs helping the blind. I never knew that my fellow Germans had the idea and I never knew that Oldenburg therefore has actaual historical weight to it. That strangely reminds me about a story from WW2 from my home. It's about Clemens August Graf von Galen or "lion of Münster". It's areally interesting event happening during WW2. I know that you probably get requests like this everyday and of course you decide what makes it into the show, but I would really appreciate it if his story gets included in one of your videos at some point. Unfortunatly it's too long to post it into the comments, but there are many interesting articles about one of my personal heros. But most importantly he shows that not nearly every German was a Nazi let alone supported them and I think too few people now about this very important fact.

Oxycominum The Nazis were tyrants, I feel really bad for Germans because through out the world wars it's been really easy to dehumanize all of them. In all reality people were scared, times were tough, and it's easy for crazy people to take advantage of people who are experiencing these. There were a lot of wonderful German people throughout both world wars, and even though war is horrible one of the only good things that came out of it was the technology from all sides. But I agree, I don't think enough people now about how isolated the real Nazis actually where.

Wow, I actually learned some new facts! I already knew about four of them. My fav was the crickets chirping slowed down, which I first discovered 3 years ago. I was amazed. Now, it makes me wonder what the whistling language would sound like, slowed down?

Sharon is Ozzy’s wife, Charon (care-on) is Pluto’s moon named from the ferry man of the afterlife.

See that's the interesting part, the guy who actually found the planet, James Christy, named it after the nickname of his wife who's so happen to have a name similar enough to the ferryman to get a pass. Her name was Charlene, and went by the nickname Char, pronounce like the music singer. Meaning he pronounced it as if it was an "sh.". Thank you for the comment.

The nickname for Charlene I always hear is pronounced with an ah sound like the name Charlene itself. So perhaps it would be like shaw-run?

Hey Dale, Glad you're back to your old ways. The Crickets fact makes me wonder what other animal sounds could be manipulated to creative effect like this one? Language is an understanding between any two individuals . I wonder if there are any structural similarities between the whistling languages of people and the complex whistling command systems used by herdsmen to control there dogs? Always interesting. Thanks.
