We're downsizing and making every room multipurpose. Our 1 acre micro-homestead is being built for us to age out in and be as independent as possible... Well, generators, irrigation, gardens, chickens, etc. It's a historic village and we're surrounded by friends with land. We spend lots of afternoons sitting under trees and on porticos sipping coffee or ice tea. We all cook from scratch and share meals...

I have lots of native (!) flowers in my garden. This year I have collected plenty of seeds. I offered them as a gift in a group. What can I say, I gave out over 60 bags and sometimes I got a little something in return. I'm pleased that more native flowers will soon be blooming here again for the insects. A win-win situation.

Some great ideas, thank you. 🥰 We currently have a glut of potatoes and left over mashed potatos. We turn the mash into potato pastry, like they did in the UK during World War 2 because of wheat shortages. The potato pastry is lighter than normal pastry and you don't need extra fat as the startch in the potato holds the pastry together. So it's healthier than normal pastry too. Use left over stew or casserole as your pie filling and a potato pastry top to make a tasty warming pie for Winter xx

Drinking pumpkin spiced flavored coffee! We did the experience thing for my husband this year. He too is a nature lover and hates going out to eat at restaurants. Instead, we took him to a local lake where everyone including the little granddaughters went fishing. Money spent was on the meat and cheeses for homemade sub sandwiches. Lettuce and tomatoes came from our garden, along with home made pickles. Home made cupcakes were also a hit!

I don't have a "free room", but I do keep a "free list". It's a running list of everything I've found curb-side in my neighbourhood over the years. Lots of really useful things like a solid pine chest, a sturdy step-stool, vacuum attachments, foam floor mats ... hundreds of dollars worth of useful stuff that people have thrown out.

My neighbors and neighbor community are the absolute best. We trade dog sitting, watching each others homes, one of them has helped me so much with my gardening and growing food, another with some discounted small plumbing work, and I provide lots of nursing advice and first aid treatments (I'm an RN). Neighbors and community really do make more difference than any politics going on!

Great tips! My neighbor & I walk 3 mornings a week - neither of us would do that on our own - and while walking we 'curbside' shop alot. We've picked up walkers, seasonal decorations, kitchen items, baskets, large storage containers, etc. Some items we kept for ourselves but the majority were donated to the local church thrift store. We do not sell anything we pick up and there's nothing wrong with that but we choose not to.

My process with jack-o-lanterns is to get the seeds out and start the drying while I am doing the carving. I used to salt them and roast them but they weren’t popular. After hallowe’en, I cut the pumpkin into cubes. I cut off the peel and any yucky bits. Then I steam it until soft. I mash it and then freeze it in ziploc bags. When I had dogs I would give them a bit of pumpkin in their dinners.they love it and it’s good for them. These days I have a friend who makes truly excellent pies. I drop off the packs of pumpkin and when she makes pies, I get to visit. It’s a win/ win. 😊 Bit that don’t get processed end up in the compost.

😂 love this! I have a “free Camper” project, a truck camper I’m remodelling and that is almost completely free. What wasn’t free was discounted, except for the $200 I have into products for the roof re-seal. This will let us cut at least $160/month from my husbands work commute for 2024. It’s getting completed and mounted on our truck this week. We are on a small island, and he has to ferry to a different island for one of his jobs. A lot of the materials for the re-model were locally salvaged or bartered. Good local connections are absolutely the best money saver, and it builds a sense of community too!

We buy heirloom pumpkins for .25 cents each at Sprouts in the first week of November. We save the seeds and sell them for a dollar a packet in spring. We aren't getting rich but we do fund some of the seeds we need or want to purchase for our garden season.

Yes I have Next Door. The local one I have gone on has some people asking for money 😮 So I rarely look at it. We bought a Black Friday item last week that has a $30 rebate. It required us to fill it out on line, print it AND then mail it in🤔 Seems the manufacturer may hope people will not do all the steps. Hahaha the frugal people will challenge that process for the win.

I save seeds from things I get at the store melon, squash, pumpkins, etc. at the end of the season I gather and dry flower seeds from my yard. I keep the seeds in saved pasta sauce jars. Our outdoor lamp posts didn't work when we bought the house and too expensive to rewire. I found solar lamp post lights on Amazon so they are lit up for free. We built raised beds from the neighbors old fence boards and filled them with leaves and pine needles from the neighbors who were glad to get rid of them. We keep a five gallon bucket in the shower to catch water while you are waiting for it to warm up. Almost always enough for one flush. When you buy green onions, cut off about an inch on the root end and plant them. They will keep on growing. Just trim off what you need and they will grow and grow

In times past, I used spent pumpkins as yard decor. You MUST realize that a bright, orange, blob will grab your eye like a beacon light in the fall and especially winter landscape; spread them out to drag your eye around. I tuck them under the edge of shrubs or gather a few as a focal point. But, i turn the carved faces towards the shrubs towards each other, etc...Then I let rot in place into the ground. Uncarved pumpkins tend to shrink evenly in place. They are super for the soil, worms love them, but be warned that 4 legged critters will use them as a food source and you may not want to feed certain populations of "outdoor pets".

Hey, Larry & Hope. I do appreciate these ideas. Although I have noticed that you do not address maintenance/repairs for house or vehicles much, which would save much more than groceries. One of you must change the oil/rotate tires, install brake pads, a starter (etc). And home repairs.. Repairs to plumbing, electrical, roofing, simple stuff. Maybe in the future? Thanks. Be well & Happy Holidays.

We gathered other's leaves for the garden in volumes contained by a 1 ton, flat bed, stake side truck. We found that gathering piles of leaves on a tarp then gathering the edges of the tarp to contain the leaves worked far better than using plastic bags or garbage/ 1 yard lawn waste cans. For weight and for maneuverability however, we found that King sized (and other), thrift storebed sheets to work best. At the time, we could get the King sized sheets for $1 and better, bigger contractor's plastic bags for $.50. The bed sheets were pretty much guaranteed to last at least 2 trips and a second year; the contractor's bags not so much so. Once you get your leaves home, you will need a containment system. You can use wire fencing around them, lay a tarp weighted by a few rocks over them, or lay those bed sheets over them with a few rocks. Fruit tree leaves seem to breas down over the course of a winter far better than many of the others in the area. The big maple leaves dont particularly break down and the big Norway maples have stems which will wrap around rototill tines come spring, or a couple of springs into the future. Some people put these leaves in a garage can or to gallon barrel then use the weed wacker to break them down into crumples before top dressing the garden being put to bed for the winter; you'll still need something to keep them in the garden and not blown all about your yard. If they are broken down enough you can till them into the spring garden soil where they will continue to break down slower than barn cleanings providing some structure for the soil and water retention thin for the drought times. Other people rake them off amd use them as the layered brown component in thier spring time compost pile which is full of green weeds, spring grass clippings, amd more more green.

I would love to find a group of people willing to do these kind of ideas! Everyone I know is either cheap in every bad sense of the word (never tipping, etc), or people wanting to only do things that would cost minimum $100 Lol if I could only find the middle ground of nice frugal people.

I buy pumpkins in the fall for a fall display along with straw bales but don't carve them. I cut them after the fall season is over and pressure can them in small cubes for eating, save some of the pumpkin seeds for planting and peel some of the seeds for eating. The straw bales I leave outside and use them in the garden the next year. I also went to $ general when the seeds they sell were at 90% and got a lot of them when they went lower so I am set up for next year and can give away some of the seeds packets away. I also plan on planting a bigger garden next year and hopefully can sell my extra at our local flea market or farmers market!

I bought an 8kw diesel heater, heats the whole house in minutes, costs about 30euro per month in fuel to run it just a little while morning and night..much cheaper than Central heating, wood stove or anything else I've found, also runs fine from solar powered batteries or a simple car battery.

We go through a fair amount of coffee and save our used coffee grounds in a coffee can with an extra lid on the bottom to prevent rust rings, then top dress our acid loving shrubs with the grounds. Too dress is simply spreading out in the top of the soil. We also hand crumble our egg shells into the spent coffee grounds. In the city, I quit adding the egg shells because both pigeons and rats would eat them for calcium; at least in my spot of the inner city I was living in. Outside of that, i haven't found but a single critter who disturbed the coffee grounds and that was a neighbor's small dog who liked to roll in them. Again, this eliminates a heavy, wet, drippy component from the landfill garbage stream; and reduces the need to have to wash garbage cans.

If we make extras for a meal, we take some to an elderly widow near us. It cheers them uo and us too. It's what makes a neighborhood good. Helping each other without an underlying motive. Have had too many of the see how much I can take kind of neighbors. Miss having a ton of neighbors who were genuinely kind and thoughtful. Still have some. We try to be that when we can. Won't tolerate the other ones.

Hi, keeping seeds is a whole science as vegetables tend to cross with other plants of the same kind. The result can be starchy corn, bitter carrots or infertile plants. One important point: If you save pumpkin or zucchini seeds and the next year your pumpkins taste bitter, they are poisonous and must not be eaten. If they don't taste bitter, they are fine.

I bought a nice vacuum cleaner at the last hour of an estate sale. The next week a local radio station had a person who was moving and was throwing them out!! I don't have a free room but use estate sales to purchase stuff that would ruin my budget at full cost .
