I dont know his reasoning is just stupid, its bad and its a joke because idol culture. Hm Keeey... O.o I know this isnt for everybody, but bro calling the devs and executives stupid because they did a product he certanly isnt the target demographic is just stupid on itself. The idol theme makes it at least somewhat unique and it has its tharget demographic so just chill. And to be honest the game was pretty great, for me and for many others.

@@SeTirap Mainly cause many think the game should have had a more serious and thought provoking storyline based on its mother franchises which are such super serious and thought provoking. Some even think if it was was not for the fire emblem themed characters it may as well be a SMT and FE crossover in name only. Heck I myself noticed that while FE got loads of legacy characters, SMT only got represented in gameplay and vice versa. While I admit he may have been fuming quite excessively, it makes sense, and it doesn't help that the plot itself (at least to some and including myself) did not feel impactful on its own merits. I feel like a lot of what is given in Side Stories should have been referenced more in the main story at least as without them there is not much to the characters, especially MC.

Eternal Sonata has a really nice concept, a series based on dream worlds created by dying musicians, with remixes of their songs played in them. I'd really like future Eternal Sonata titles focused on a dream world generated by Chester Bennington (Linkin Park singer), Richard Wagner, Kurt Cobain, Giuseppe Verdi, Avicii, Giacomo Puccini, Arnold Schoenberg or Karlheinz Stockhausen. In that case, though, the dream worlds the game take place in would be completely different from each other depending on genre of music played and how they died, maybe a classical musician like Chopin generated a cartoony fairytale world while a nu metal singer who died by suicide, like Chester, would generate a cyberpunk edgy dystopia, or a grunge singer who shot himself in the mouth. like Cobain, generates a bleak steampunk world, or Stockhausen, who combines classical and electronic, could generate a world that combines medieval fantasy elements with modern tech akin to the Trails series.

i rather liked shining resonance. it had issues but i ended up not only beating it but platinuming it. most of my issues with it were involved in maxing trophies, that's where most of the grind and RNG went. if you're not trying to get all the rare treasure chest drops or trigger every last romance quest, it was a lot more accessible. yeah the dragon controls were shit, i just didn't use the dragon, it was not necessary most of the time. (which made one trophy a pain, but i digress.) yeah the couple times they dumped a mandatory battle with crap characters were not fun, but those were one-off issues in a large game. overall i thought it was an above average and enjoyable experience. will say, though: random weather necessary for random rare spawns necessary for random drops are absofuckinglutely satan.

The only thing I had against it, was the _ludicrous_ amounts of enemies they put in the way and how they respawn if you exit an area and re-enter and it takes _hours_ to get through a single dungeon. It might sound weird but...I actually found Monark way to easy, and I'm a complete noob at these kind of games, to the point that I once failed the tutorial in Makai Kingdom! I mean, yeah it is hard at the start, but if you start with Lust - which is easy, I did it by pure chance! - and start getting proper Resonance powers that stacks in the entire group - and psy boosters and armor for your fiends - you can pretty much clear enemies in 1-2 hits easy. The extra final boss literally died in 2 hits to me, and I was like "that's it? Boss is dead? Are you kidding me?". And it's not like you need to get 40 hours in to get good stuff: by the 10 hour marker my fiends had some stronger armor because of abusing Lust and the Resonance powers from the MC, and since playing on normal it allows you to get more drops I was filled with armors that were meant to be for like level 20 or 30 xD The only say that I didn't like were the jump in levels after certain chapters, especially when you need to do every character's chapter. They all jump 10 levels or so and it can be a problem. However, because of how easy it is to break the game you can farm super fast a lot of souls and that's kinda what I did. Kinda cheap but hey it's all about being smart and resourceful in these kind of games! And on normal you can still die from bosses even fi you're maxed out so I'd say it kinda balances out...although the MC should really be stronger because that's what killed me the most during my playthrough, since he's the weakest of the roster. Also the whole phone gimmick was annoying and too cryptic at times.

I agree on the missed potential in Shining Resonance Refrain. The first time I went into it, things went horrible, just as you explained. My second try I was taking these shortcomings in consideration and things went a lot better and made the game actually fun. Still - Indeed a missed opportunity. I completely agree with MONARK. I gave up after trying several times. It's a shame, because with some tweaking of the game mechanics it could have been a great game. And Nelke... What the hell where they thinking with this game? It's the only game in the Atelier franchise I will probably never buy - Enough said about that. And Tokyo Mirage Sessions... I have played for a while. What can I say about it? I went in without not expecting to have a SMT or Fire Emblem connection (not that strange, because I am a PC gamer and have little or no connection with these franchises), and it actually was a fun game to play. I think the reputation of this game (deserved or not) is too much hung up to that perceived SMT/FE connection. Without that distraction it suddenly becomes a game that you actually can enjoy. I would even go so far that a port to the PC (where a LOT less people have a connection with SMT and Fire Emblem), could actually be successful. But that's a personal opinion, and I think not everybody will agree... 😋

I disagree on Koudelka. I played it way after release, so I won't say I'm nostalgia blinded, and I didn't have any of your issues. Graphics were fine, just the right amount of dark and bleak, and I have never been opposed to neither tank controls nor random encounters in any game. Wanna play a game that thinks that being 99% dark equals automatically being scary? Play Apsulov, a first person horror game made by a Swedish studio, which blends sci-fi with norse mythology. A brilliant concept and I love many aspects of the game, but not only does the game not get fun until the 3rd act where you learn to recharge on the fly by absorbing the souls of the dead, but you have this "visor" that let's you see certain unseen things... AND functions like the world's shittiest "flashlight" in that it slightly enlightens your immediate surroundings. The game is already 99% dark and with this visor becomes 89% dark... until you need to recharge it (which is thankfully fast and automatic). But I'm like, why the fuck make the game so dark in the first place when you are gonna make our only portable source of light an infinitely rechargable visor?? Then why not just make the game 20% brighter??

Definitely agree with your points though, super wasted potential, and I really can't get over wondering what the heck they were thinking with the lack of cutscenes. The way important dialogue just sorta happened while you were standing there, or worse, cutting off conversations by running too close to a different area... Awful decision, and a damn shame too because it looked great, had okay crafting and (imo) pretty fun combat.

Gotta agree with you with Monark. Bought it since it sounds interesting, the concept is interesting, and I enjoy trapped-in-a-school scenarios, enjoyed it for a few hours then something clicked on me like my brain saying, "something isn't right here", I just abused the system and always ganged up on 1 enemy to double attack but the thing is, there is a sub objective where you need to finish the battle in x number of turns for an enormous boost in grade and exp, you can give an extra turn to your allies but at the cost of sanity for that ally which is vital where once it reaches 100%, your character either goes berserk or gets kicked out of the dungeon/floor. I really want to enjoy it, I do but such a wasted potential. Shining Resonance Refrain, only bought it because of that black-haired girl and action fantasy JRPGs are my thing. Dropped it because something didn't feel right.

one i tried but quit pretty quickly on psp. i think it was Hexyz Force. if i remember correctly, every action you take drains an AP meter from each character, and that meter almost never recovers outside of leveling up or going back to town. which makes it feel like a bad Pokemon clone where the number of attacks you have are really abysmal until you get to higher levels. in the beginning it's not so bad since you tend to level pretty quickly in starting dungeons, letting you stay on the field that much longer. but once the grind sets in, your party will be just close enough for a much needed level to recover their AP, but have no AP to speak of in order to even attack. which makes you have to run all the way back to a rest spot, and hope to hell the game doesn't kick your ass when you can't even defend yourself

Yeah, I actually have played numerous games in both franchises and I disagree with his opinion on Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I'm not saying it's an amazing game, and granted, some of his criticisms are valid, as it's not as good as most games in either franchise as most games from the two are just plain great. But most of his criticisms of it feel like they stem from his dislike of Japanese idol culture. I'm not a fan of idol culture myself, as I've always seen it as a bit creepy, but I've noticed that anytime it comes up in a game he's talking about, like the game's music being idol heavy or the story/themes being heavily steeped in idol fandoms or culture, the best thing he can say about it is usually something like "it's good despite the idol stuff" or something like that. Like, it's not even the first time he's basically spat at idol culture or music in this video despite this being the only idol heavy game in it, and he consistently paints it as a negative unless whatever else is in the game he's talking about is fantastic. I'll agree that the game is a bit of a letdown compared to the franchises it came from, but on the other hand, his clear hatred of the game seems to stem mostly from his own bias against anything relating to Japanese Idols. At least, that how I perceive it.

It is kinda hard and ironically I enjoyed the maps so grinding never felt like a chore. I also love Nelke for the nostalgia (and I like town builder games) and Shining Resonance Refrain. Though I for sure agree with all your points yet still have a massive soft spot for the game. Probably most if not all SMT games before III and IV are this kind of deal: great soundtracks, interesting plots involving transgressive representations of real-life religion deities, curiously creative demon artwork, deep fusion system among other things... all married with obsolete dungeon crawling, frustrating encounter rate, excessive enemy numbers during encounters, confusing fusion requirements, obscure alignment system, rng negotiations and, difficulty needing the player to grind itself to dust to keep up with most of the boss battles. If it wasn't for the Persona games hitting the mainstream: this franchise would probably still be an acquired taste.

Tokyo Mirrage Session is a decent game, the type you'll give the average 7.5/10 by the end of it. The game doesn't have frustrating gameplay that is literally some broken mess of shit that made no sense compared to other game in this list (Nelke has its problematic level design). But how the hell FE and SMT marriage become Idol Persona is a mystery for anyone who knows about both sides of the game. FE is always War-political story and SMT is apocalyptic survival game with biblical story, most of time. Imagine everyone's confusion at the end result being TMS which is just SMT but written from the back. It isn't like I don't understand their sentiment, mind you. I think both sides didn't want to make some big hard game that is all serious like their mainline title. But their marketing flopped at that and the disappointment meter at the mere decision was high at the time. It is only lately that people start giving the game a chance and play it beyond its initial marketing hype. So, in a way it is indeed a game with 'wasted potential' since it took them forever until people play it beyond its cover.

Monster Hunter Stories is a waste of potential, they tried to copy something like pokemon and I feel like it "almost" works, but the biggest problem for me about that game is that while the battle is simple enough, using a paper rock scissors style, the problem lies in the amount of memorization you need to do. Each monsters can have 2 or 3 type of attack and you need to learn "if they stance is like this they gonna use this attack" for all of them. I get if it's your 1st encounter so you won't know what stance is what type of attack, but at least put in some kind of a memo system, I'll even take something like in P5 where your party member yell "this enemy is weak to this attack" after you've found their weakness
