Gen X here, but lots of experience Cooking While Chronically Ill (not trademarked but it should be lol!). My imaginary dream kitchen remodel includes several of these. A few others: • Someplace to sit or even lie down whilst monitoring slower cooking projects (clear sightline to cooktop). A cushioned window seat at dining table height is one option. A "keeping room" nook with a comfortable chair is another. • Different height surfaces was mentioned but still assumed a standing cook. A seated work surface with room underneath for legs is surprisingly rare. An adjustable hydraulic-lift table would be awesome. • Knobs & dials are often easier for visually-impaired cooks than touch screens. At the very least, screens with large lettering & clear icons. • Drawer handles that don't catch on belts & belt loops. Balance issues affect more than just the ability to climb up & down; getting hung up on something is just as bad. • Appliances that turn themselves off automatically (via a timer or sensor or whatever).

I hate drawer handles that snag belt loops, straps, sleeves, etc. Also, uncomfortable (sharp edges, too small) knobs and pulls need to go.

In the middle of a kitchen redo right now. My husband is a wood worker so we will have a very custom kitchen. Small 10x10 and storage is top of the list. Dead space on lower cabinets was enough to custom build huge super Susan and a pull out wonderful spice rack. Quartz in order and uppers are ready to go. My best advice, ladies marry a wood worker.

I had never heard of Servo-Drive hardware. How awesome is that! An article I read this week about aging in place said to consider shallow depth sinks. I have a 6" deep sink now because that was what was available 30+ years ago when the house was built. Now, most of the sinks out there are 10" depth. The 5"-6" depth sinks are considered ADA sinks. When I was doing dishes at my niece's new house, in her 10" deep sink, I walked away with my upper back killing me. I think the shallow depth will make sense for me. Thanks for a great video Mark!

My husband and I have been having the “accessibility” discussion as we are planning our kitchen and bath remodel. He is stuck in the “old” standards but I have a fused ankle that will eventually lead to a walker later on (we are in our 60’s now). This video is my “see! I am not crazy!” I am all about drawers for base cabinets, a pantry, 9” toe kick heights and depths, a pantry with shallow shelves, lights every where (as we age, we need more light to see) and having them in the cabinets and drawers, motion activated lighting, easy clean everything, but not sold on the shallow depth sink- I have one and as I wash all my pots and pans by hand, that is just not gonna fly in this house. I like the majority of your ideas except the sink and raising the dishwasher and that “smart” appliances- nope, not going their, our experience is the more “smart” and appliance is, the shorter the life span of the appliance (and I am meticulous about cleaning properly and using everything as directed in the users manual and we are going back to a basic Speed Queen washer/dryer set as our “smart” set has been more trouble in the 5 years we have had them and had to have some repairs which cost as much as a new set). I encouraged our daughter and son-in-law to make wider hallways and doors as they are designing and building their forever dream one story home and they definitely took the advice for a curbless and larger shower with a separate tub. Thanks for all of your ideas!

Great ideas! I’m on the cusp of the boomer generation, so not sixty yet. I didn’t expect to be facing reduced mobility just yet but am now dealing with a form of degenerative arthritis. We’re finally getting our kitchen redone after 30 years. If not for that I might still just carry on with the kitchen we have. But I’ve had to consider all these things now because of my condition. I’m very relieved that these new adaptations are available. Not cheap but necessary. I think everyone should consider building their new kitchens with these options if they can afford it because it could extend your ability to stay in your home longer.

We designed and built a galley kitchen 10 yrs ago. Triangle from sink to fridge to stove; enough space between counters to walk freely if two or more people are in there; pot lights on dimmers (wall switches next to two doors and entrance from dining room), under-cabinet lighting, lighting above cooktop, light switch in shallow pantry, pendant in breakfast nook, I put puck lights where needed in cabinets (show meds above sink, spices in cabinet next to stove); good size microwave under wall oven; deep drawers under cooktop for pots and pans; coffee nook next to fridge. Very functional kitchen, a pleasure to work in.

Idea for upper corner cabinet : put no cabinet, have elevating corner that goes up into the gap. You could have a Blender in the corner, push a button and it goes away up into the gap.

My parents are baby boomers and they did their kitchen remodel a few years ago. I wish they would have installed the cabinet pull down units you mentioned. My mom is 5' tall. She's always having to bring in a step stool to access stuff. This would save so much of her time and frustration.
@MTKDofficial
@MTKDofficial 5 ай бұрын
You can still install them after the fact if the cabinet sizes are suitable.
@edwardcasper5231

As a Boomer (I'm 73 years old) who lives in a retirement community, many of these ideas are already incorporated into my kitchen (except the pull down cabinet units, which may not have been available when my home was built 50+ years ago). One of the best features of my kitchen is that all of the lower cabinets are drawers (much easier to access my stuff). My small galley kitchen (no corners!!!) is also wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair. One other consideration - the placement of the controls on one's stove. Front mounted controls mean there's no reaching over hot burners if one is in a wheelchair. P.S. - my countertops are the original laminate with a matching laminate backsplash. Hey it works! They're very easy to clean, but the laminate is detaching from the base in one corner (heck, the kitchen is 50+ years old). I'm probably going to replace all of it (maybe even the backsplash) with quartz. It'll be interesting to see if the quartz slab backsplash is competitive with tile. The material cost will probably be higher, but the labor may be less expensive as the solid surface probably takes less time to install.

5:00 and 6:17 My plan (looks like I should be executing by now, but...) includes a split-level countertop placing the oven twelve inches higher than it would be in a free-standing range, making the lower racks of the oven accessible, leaving space below for a seldom-used item storage drawer and counterspace above for the toaster, can opener, and such. Chef Mike will just have to tough it out over the cooktop for another thirty years, or until some higher-dimension mathematician repeals the Pauli Exclusion Principle.

My problem with a microwave at counter height is that I use if for heating things in measuring cups a lot. Even if I don't heat the measuring cup I pop that thing in there to check the level and make sure it is the correct measurement. So I cringe when people say to put it on the counter.

My wife and I have recently begun watching and enjoying your videos. FYI: the venerable gentlewoman in the wheelchair trying to deal with a standard countertop height looks... well, I can feel the pain (timestamp 00:05:38). My (almost) ideal height for prep and cooking is 80cm, not the standard 90cm. Otherwise I am very much "shrugging" while carrying out chores, and over short period of time becomes extremely painful. There are wheelchair users much taller than I who are comfortable with the 90cm height, but there are also shorter users that 70cm which are more comefortable for them. That said, it is a bummer that we need shallow sinks to get the job done (not much depth for soaking dishes). The toe kick step sounds like a great idea since my very petite and vivacious wife sometime struggles with items on the top shelf of the upper cabinets. It may be simpler than pulling out the heavy step ladder everytime she needs something. If the toe kick can be used as storage too, it may be a bonus option.

Great tips, however, I would never purchase a thermo-foil-wrapped kitchen cabinet, as I live in a home that has them, the previous homeowner installed them. If water sits on them (top edge of lower cabinet doors) they will lift and flake off exposing the particle board underneath My white cabinets have yellowed badly (the stain of smokers, and I don't smoke), and I can't seem to keep them clean, no matter what I try. The cabinet doors have vertical grooves, where splatter/dust gathers, a nightmare to clean. Ladies/gents, do yourselves a favor and stay away from these types of cabinets.
@MTKDofficial

I agree that thermofoil can be tricky. However, sourcing out good quality is a must. Brands like Belanger or Premule are good places to start. Plus the manufacturing process over the years has improved greatly.

i would love to have a wall oven, but the only possible spot it could go is, as far as i can see, undoable. For one thing, the spot is partly in the dining room, so the oven would be above the carpet. And all it is right now is empty wall space next the refrigerator, so we'd have to get an electrician in and then who knows what all that would lead to; the thought of what should be a simple project becoming a monster overnight with no way to turn back would be a nightmare.

Hi Kim, I had my kitchen renovated last year (thanks for a great design Mark) and one of the things I wanted was lights in the bottom drawers, pullouts and glass and pantry cabinets. I purchased the Ikea ones and found overall they were not very expensive. I have 24 lights that turn on when I open the drawers or pull out the pull out drawers. Plus an additional 5 spot lights in cupboards that turn on with remote control (plus dimmer). Total for Ikea lighting was under $1000 and that includes the light listed above, under cabinet lighting, 4 wireless drivers, 2 remotes for the lights. I am selling my house in 5 years so I think it will one of the things that most other houses will not have…a bonus when competing for top price.
