I know for a fact that a newspaper article from 1981 quoting Lucas, stated that he had a 9 chapter story roughly sketched out, some chapters more than others. I still have that article. The article came out around 1981 right after 'The Empire Strikes Back' and as a young fella back then, the idea excited me to no end. This causes me to doubt the veracity of this video.

Point is that Lucas definitively did not have a specific plan for anything other than the current film he was making, even when he made the Prequels he only had a basic outline. He had ideas on making 9-12 films, yes that is a quote. However, he neither had a specific story outline more than basic ideas nor actually intended to make them.
@jimcook1161

I second this. The quote came out to explain why ESB was subtitled as Episode V and everone was wondering what happened to eps II,III and IV (Star Wars wasn't at this point subtitled Episode IV). Lucas didn't have any plan but the nine scripts story is definitely true.

I remember he had big plans for 9 and he talked about it, but I think the difficulty of lining up the actors, the security on set, and eventually have more money than he knew what to do with caused him to scale back his plans and attempt to rewrite his previous plans. I also think the one about Lando is crap. Lando was brought in as insurance because Harrison kept insisting that George Kill Han Solo. George decided instead he'd freeze him in carbonite and Harrison could skip a few movies but they were able to sign him up for Jedi so they thawed him right away.

I remember seeing an interview in the 80's where Mark Hamill told them Goerge Lucas asked him if he would be interested in playing Luke in the sequels, but he had to wait (I don't remember the year he said but he had to get the prequals out of the way) Mark Hamill said "I'd love to still be working after the turn of the century" then tried to figure how old he would be. But also, I remember watching the originals rerelease (before the special editions) Goerge Lucas had interviews saying he was gonna make 1 2 and 3 and if he had time a & 8 and 9

I remember several articles in the 80's about George Lucas had three "stories" that he wrote for the original movies. He said they were too long and divided them into three each, thus making 9 stories. Maybe it was all made up but I cannot find the articles but remember reading it and thinking how cool to have 9 movies.
@countluke2334

At the same time he wanted the movie to be like a matinee from the 40s, giving the impression to start in the middle because you missed the last episode. So they dropped all those lines about the "Clone Wars" because it sounded cool and hinted at a backstory that the audience was supposed to think the could know about had they not missed the previous episode. It was rather ingenious because the just alleged there was a larger universe and an explanation to everything without having to give a lot of actual exposition.

Some other fun facts about Hamill's injury... it happened before Star Wars was even completely wrapped (either Dec 1976 or Jan 1977 by his recollection), so every publicity appearance he did for Star Wars, as well as the entirety of Corvette Summer, were shot post-injury. And he looks totally normal, so why would on Earth would they need to put a big scar on him to hide anything?. Also, his actual injury was on the opposite side from the wampa-attack injury prosthetic. Because who would allow an appliance to be repeatedly glued onto a still-healing injury site for days of shooting?

I know the Hoth scenes were filmed near the hotel, with many of the locals serving as extras. I don't know about 10 feet though. I also heard they had to import snow as there wasn't enough of it, despite filming in Norway. Ford was working as a carpenter, though I don't know if he ever worked for Lucas.

It is documented in J.W. Rinzler’s(R.I.P.) book:The Making of Star Wars:The Empire Strikes Back that it snowed so much overnight during production that they couldn’t get to the actual location for filming that day. The snowfall was record setting at the time. I cannot recall the exact number of feet from the hotel but they actually did indeed film just outside the hotel lobby. Rinzler was an amazing author of 3 very large and heavy books on the making of the original trilogy. Very good in depth books with interviews of cast and crew with little facts like this in it.

Kershner himself said in interview that Ford decided on "I know" on the spot, because Lucas' scripted line wasn't working. And to think that Lucas knows anything about Russian to name Chewbacca and German to name Vader, when he has a hard enough time with English! lol
@ericsmith1508
@ericsmith1508 Жыл бұрын
Irving Kerchner said himself in the documentary "Empire of Dreams" (and in several other interviews about Star Wars) that the scripted line was Leia saying "Ilove you" and Han saying "Ilove you too". Day of the shoot neither he nor Ford liked the line and thought it needed to be different. They tossed ideas back and forth for quite some time even filming many different takes with many different lines. Then on what would be the final take Ford simply said to Kerchner, "Let's just do it. I'll get it in the moment" or some such thing as that. Kerschner said "OK. Action!" And when Fischer says "Ilove you" Ford responds "I know" and that is the way Kerschner the director has ALWAYS told the story. So I call into question all of What Cultre's "rEsEaRcH" in all of these examples!

It was known before the release of TESB. People forget that of course there was no internet. You got your info from books and magazines , newspapers which may have been published months after an interview. Lucas wanted to buy the rights to Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. He couldn't so he created his own space fantasy myth. He had numerous iterations but always it was a multi film idea. He realized he needed to pitch the first one that would best convince film studios. Which was the middle three. He figured the first movie would make around the same money as a Disney movie at that time, wanted to fund the remaining films and put as a condition in the contract that 20th Century Fox sign marketing rights to him. Star Wars did better than expected. He ALWAYS had planned to have 9 stories, though the 12 is dicey. This video and its creator is half cocked on a lot of his conclusions

When Star Wars, from the Adventures of Luke Skywalker was changed to Star Wars Episode 4 A New Hope, Lucas had plans to do 9 movies. There was rumors that Boba Fett was Han Solo's brother. pretty sure Lucas decided he couldn't do the episodes 6 to 9 he was originally considering, so he ended the major plot with episode 6, and killed Vader and the Emperor.

Years ago I read that Lucas had a rough (and ever-changing) outline of an overall story and decided the part with the most action...and thus the part most likely to succeed....was the middle section of his outline. This seems to be pretty likely. When the first movie was very successful, 'Star Wars' was eventually retitled 'Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope' when it hit home VHS iirc. A lot of people seem to think that he knew exactly what he wanted each movie to be from the very beginning, and that he had all details of the story fully planned out. Clearly that is not even close to the case, or he would have never allowed Luke & Leia to kiss in Empire!
@ScooterinAB
@ScooterinAB Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Lucas said a lot of things. I read a book a while ago on the making of the mostly the first movie. The impression I got was that Lucas did a lot of character and world building, but never had any kind of story in mind. He picked "the middle" because he'd have one chance to make such a movie, and rather than do all this slowburn world building and not get the movie done, he decided to make a story that he had thought a little about. The book points out that there was never a plan for multiple movies and suggests that there was never really a plan for any. It sounded like he didn't have any kind of story or series in mind, and instead focused on one part of his worldbuilding because making a (star) war was more interesting and making anti-Vietnam war movies was all the rage. Only after the movie was a success and Lucas decided he liked money did he continue that worldbuilding to come up with other stories, but even then, there was never a plan for any other movies past the next one or two. The story of 9-12 films only comes way later when Lucas decided that he still liked money and figured no one would notice when he changed his story.

From a previous draft of Empire ... In a flash the guards have slipped binders on Chewbacca, who is too distraught to protest. Han gives his furry friend a final hug and turns to Princess Leia. He takes her in his arms and she gives him a passionate kiss. LEIA ... I love you. I couldn't tell you before, but it's true. HAN ... just remember that, 'cause I'll be back ... He sheds his cocky smile and gives her a soft kiss on the forehead. Tears roll down Leia's face as she watches the dashing pirate walk to the hydraulic platform. Lando, too, watches with anguish. The origin, as best as I recall, of the X number of movies was a Gary Kurtz comment on Lucas' notes regarding the backstory and the wider world of his Star Wars universe, saying that he had enough material for about 9 movies there. But the reason people remember Lucas saying it was because he did so, several times to several different people, even if it wasn't strictly true that he'd actually mapped them out in detail.

More likely was that they needed an extra costume. While it was known that Lucas might not be able to get Ford back, Lando exists as his own character and always did. It's just a coincidence. In-universe, Lando didn't have time to move his elaborate cape collection (which is a thing and it's hilarious) into the Falcon, and used one of Han's outfits because that's what would have been on board.

When someone misquotes or makes something up, you'd be surprised how many people will just parrot it back without fact checking. After a while, like, say, 45 years, the non-fact sounds true just because we've been hearing it for so long.

The "Carrie" thing makes absolutely no sense. Hamill didn't blow up the Death Star and he didn't fly in just before the camera started rolling. It's a movie. Movies aren't real. And movies aren't shot in sequence. He wouldn't have slipped up and called out Fisher's name in excitement because they would have been sitting around for probably an hour before setting up that take.

What's up with number 10? I think you guys got it backwards. Maybe the word "celibate" means something else in English, because the way I know it, it means "someone who can't or doesn't want to get married". So I don't know where you pulled the whole "one night stands are fine but marriages are not" thing from, maybe from your one night stand starved imaginations, but I think you got your signals crossed.
@guyjperson
@guyjperson 2 жыл бұрын
Well, in English common usage DOES indicate not having sex. The modern term "Incel" derives from Involuntarily Celibate....Which means "Can't get laid" , not "Can't get married." Even the dictionary definition, while mentioning marriage(religious crap) ALSO includes not boning.
@Playhouse76
@Playhouse76 2 жыл бұрын
In a religious context, it typically means unmarried and sexually abstinent. In a secular context, it generally means someone who doesn't have sex, by choice or by circumstance. Since Jedi were considered warrior monks, they were thought to be both unmarried and unable to have sex, by choice. A commitment to their faith and the Order. Lucas clarified this and said sex was fine, but marriage and relationships were taboo because of the whole attachment thing.
@MBF78
@MBF78 2 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make it less stupid. Also, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there were some Jedi who had families, due to the nature of their species, aka non-humans. And don't come to me with "that's not canon" or anything like that. It's irrelevant to the discussion whether it'scanon or not. If it can happen, that means it can't not happen. :)

@@MBF78 In the expanded universe books that were out before the prequels, many Jedi had families. Then Episode I came out and when Lucas came up with the stated 'attachments and relationships are forbidden' the authors explained it away, as 'the new Jedi didn't know about this rule' and when they discovered the rule had existed, they decided to ignore it for their new era. Of course once the sequels came out the old expanded universe was tossed out, being relabeled as 'Legends'.

Most likely, since midi-chlorians seem to be genetically inherited. Makes sense they'd want to cull their ranks from being too powerful

If two parents hit the gym often, with their kid also hit the gym? Maybe, but that's more of an environmental factor than a genetic one. The child of two Jedi knocking boots would likely get early training and some amount of special treatment, resulting in more successful training. Plus midichlorians are dumb.

Here we are in 2022 and the first movie came out 45 years ago. Star Wars did to the movie industry is what Elvis did to the music industry. To me, they have ran it into the ground a bit. With all the spinoffs, animation movies, shorts and one off series. Disney didn't do it justice with the last two films. The 7th one was actually pretty good. It's like the took all three of the originals and combined them. So, I getting tired of it. Sorry fans.

Your content is good, but your copy is obnoxious. "I like apples,” becomes "I, the illustrious author making claims of selfhood, enjoy the mastication and consumption of the fruit that falls in its full red abundance from trees which most botanical specialists call apple trees." Why do you have to be so verbose?! By the time you finish the predicate, I don’t remember what the subject of the sentence is. Truly annoying.
