31 years of playing now! (And not ons za Grampspaz guitars guys! ) It's amazing! I've never altered my pick grip before tonight. And I've always had open hand for palm muting. So I tried your grip. Did a few drills with the new grip and holy shit All of the sudden I started landing simple runs at 125bpm 130bpm. I'm impressed man! Thanks! What I would have given fire KZfaq when I was a kid learning guitar. Back then it was, 'wait for the monthly issue of Guitar World magazine, buy books from local music stores, and trade info with friends. Crazy change compared to now.

Snapping motion tip about string transition is very helpful for me. (Ending with an up stroke on the lower string and then having to play a down stroke on the higher string.) That kind of string transition has been the most difficult thing for me for many years. Thanks to your advice, now I know what to focus on when practicing. I'll Pick up my guitar and practice right now. Thank you BERNTH.🤟

Thank you bernth! Have been struggling with fire and ice at a low bpm for months... Finally I progressed! Light touches, minimal wrist movements really helps... Something I never thought of cause I always exaggerated the wrist movements and swayed left and right... My speed and precision increased with just light touches and keeping my wrist steady...

Great tips! And more exercises to work into my daily routine. I can't thank you enough! One other consideration for using a 'light' touch with the fretting hand is the notes are less likely to go sharp. I really suffered from 'gorilla gripping' my guitar neck for a long time (and still struggle with it), and I always wondered why I sounded so 'out of tune'. Most guitars suffer from being a little sharp with the first few frets, and pressing hard on the strings *really* bends it sharp. A light touch Technik is SO important!

I taught myself how to play in high school and have been playing for about 15 years now. I got far with no real strong technical foundation or lessons, but I've always been capped by speed. I just assumed I didn't have it in me to shred. I stumbled upon the BERNTH's picking technique video and had an AH-HA moment. I had weak technique and I was holding the pick wrong! I feel like I finally have a path to playing stuff I've always wanted to play, and I'm now taking building a technical foundation seriously. I probably thought that was boring before, but what you gain from it is so worth it. Playing with consistency, confidence, and without strain makes playing so much more enjoyable. I'm taking it slow, but things are finally making sense.

Great job young man! I'm 59 yrs old and I have played guitar since I was 12. I grew up playing on cheap high action axes. Thus I've known my fingers are way to far away from the frets to progress. switching to .007s and .008s made me focus on having a lighter touch. That made a world of difference in my playing. I think a scalloped fretboard also forces you to have a light touch as well.

Trick #2 combined with your way of holding the pick and closed hand... this is MAGIC I was always playing with an open hand, anchoring with my pinky, and my index and thumb holding the pick were always kind of "unstable", but somehow I managed, alternate picking was working good enough at least but I've been practicing sweeps for some time, they were giving me quite some trouble, it's like you said, it felt that sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, it was kinda random and then I tried your technique - suddenly the sweeps became almost effortless, and I can do them consistently well, WTF how such a small change can give such a leap in progress, it's really magic...

Just started learning to play. I’m 62 and I’ve always wanted to learn how to play. The biggest challenge for me is fingering the fret board. I just can’t seem to angle my fingers right, especially when I’m practicing the spider crawl. Going to practice some of these techniques and hope it’ll help me or maybe I’m just too old 😊

I don't know if anyone has suggested this to you, but boading balls helped my fretting. You can also do exercises with one where you hold it in your palm and touch every finger to it when you're watching tv or whatever. Making sure your wrist is relatively straight instead of cocked toward yourself is also important.

If you sit while you practice (and you’re right handed) hold your guitar on your left leg, not the right one. It will bring your left hand to a much more comfortable place as you try to keep your left thumb as close to the center of the neck as possible (on top of the skunk stripe if you play a strat), not over the top of the neck.

im a bass player and these tips and tricks are insanely helpful for a bass player as well (pretty obvious but still). the strings are thicker and further apart and i transcribe some exercises down to lower strings but ye, insanely helpful still. thank you

Great video. I'm trying out the closed hand technique as recommended. I really struggle with stopping my thumb helping my picking, which inevitably leads to sloppiness. I know Yngwie manages, but I lack his God given ability. I can already see in the 15 minutes I've been trying, it does seem to show some promising potential. Thanks Bernth.

I've tried and tried the closed hand picking like he does and it makes my hand hurt. It's more difficult for me to play like that. I think some people CAN play easily like that but other just can't. People hand shapes are different. I play with the open palm.

@@amazingthingsfromaroundthe2057 there's definitely no single correct way. Definitely go for what's right for you. I've been struggling to stop my thumb joining the party, initially this does seem to do the trick of keeping those micro finger movements at bay. It's amazing when you see how much thumb movement Yngwie has when he picks, from what I can see, it tends to be when he economy picks during string changes. It obviously works well for him, being as he is a virtuoso. I on the other hand need as much help as I can get!!

@@davidyates8880 I see lots of people playing with the closed hand but I just can't make it work. And also just as many great guitarist play with the open hand. I agree that go with what works best for you. For me it's extremely uncomfortable playing with the closed hand. I also choke down on my pick a lot. Sometimes so much I do pinch harmonics when I don't mean to.

Ikr? That was the best advice I've heard in a long time! I had the same issue with the thumb and when I stopped doing that thumb motion it was kind of disapointing at first, I couldn't play at higher bpms like I used to but with more practice it feels way better now :) still not as fast, but it feels more effortless this way. The momentum does most of the job lol

you've got to be ignorant to put him in the same category as Gilbert. malmsteen I get it, he is a very binary player that does that one thing (harmonic minor) very well, better than anybody but still binary. meanwhile Gilbert is a fuckin wizard and always has been. you can totally disagree with me, but this is one of those things where if you know you know

I’m saying Bernth is getting to be on the same techinical level - and a review of his picking technique confirms what I’m saying. I’ve played for a long time and done over 3,000 shows, hired and fired Berklee grads.... i know talent. Bernth is next level.

The thumbnail picture shows a very important aspect of the fretting hand technik which is angling the pinky against the fretboard. This has personally helped me a lot with the 134 type of legato licks. Not sure, if you already talked about it.

Hey Bernth, firstly I'm very thankful for your comprehensive videos which helped to extremely improve my technique. Now I have a question, I normally play with a closed hand while picking, but as soon as it gets to hybrid picking I have my hand like half open half closed, because either closing or opening it fully wouldn't be economic, do you have any advice regarding hand position during hybrid picking?

Thank you, Bernth! Your videos show me, how degenerated my technique has become. I´ve started 25+ years ago and was quite fast. As the years went by, I became absolutely sloppy and "fake". Now, I start again with the basics! Especially playing with the metronome, keeping a steady alternate picking and most important: having a good left hand grip and therefore putting the guitar way higher on the belt. Looks way more uncool, but feels amazingly more natural! THX, Bernth!!!👍

Regarding Trick 5: It was really unnatural for me to keep the pick parallel to the string when playing with a closed group and thought if the pick was at an angle, it was bad technique. Really happy to know its now ^_^

I’m new to guitar playing and I want to learn as much as I can from people who know the proper techniques and methods. I’ve been training my fingers with D’Addario guitar finger strengthening device. Been practicing pentatonic scales and metal rhythm. I sound extremely terrible but determined to learn from people like this musician here.

I always play with my fingers open and I feel like I get the best results that way. I learned early on that I play much better when I use a hybrid picking technique. What would you suggest I do if I feel uncomfortable with closing my hand? I also always sit the guitar on my left leg (kinda in between my legs) when I play and am wondering if that is the proper position I should be holding it as a right handed player. I always have the neck raised pretty high too as it seems like the only comfortable way for me to play.
