Amazing Hacks, Thank You for the tips. We have already begun to make some changes in our local SEO. A little fearful about using emojis in our GMB, I hope I will not be penalized by google. But we will see what happens.

Be careful about adding emojis to your business name. My local extension on Google Ads got reproved because of it. I don't know if Google penalizes it in organic search as well.

I don't know of a case where they penalise use of Emoji's, but yes you are right, it will make you ineligible for location extensions and Adwords Express

Hey! Amazing tutorial, but I am unable to find out the categories used by competitors. I open their listing in Google maps and then click on view page source but I can't find categories there. I am not sure what is it that I am doing wrong.

Hi all. If you're unable to find the secondary categories your competitors are using, that usually means that they're not using any. If you still want to include secondary categories, you can use the PlePer tool: pleper.com/index.php?do=tools&sdo=gmb_categories. It allows you to see secondary categories that reflect your primary category. ~ Team SEO Sherpa

It still works. Use your own listing and search for your category. If there is no category listed, it shows "none" for all 10 possible spaces.

Hi Buyseech. After some research, we can comfirm that hack #1 still works. If you can't find your competitors' categories while viewing page source, it's because they've only included one category (their primary listing) onto their GMB listing. If this is the case, another way to find the most relevant categories for your industry is to use the Pleper tool: pleper.com/index.php?do=tools&sdo=gmb_categories. Thank you for your local SEO tips. Isen‘t it a bit hypocritical to say it’s wrong to use keywords in addition to the brand name but use emoji that are not in your brand name?

Hi Samuel. As the video explains, the goal with removing keyword spammers from the local pack is to make sure you don't participate in "black hat" SEO tactics. We also advocate for a keyword-optimized brand name (where the keyword fits naturally) and to use appropriate keywords into reviews. The same goes with emojis. Emojis should only be used if the emoji in question aligns with your brand name. As we know are called SEO Sherpa, a mountain emoji, closely associates with our brand. I have seen dozens of cases that have no website and no content in google maps either and rank first just because of keyword stuffing in google Maps name. It has increased significantly nowadays so the famous companies who actually have a name are losing ranking significantly! Very cheap system

Does adding the little icon in Google My Business Name still work? In your example was a small image of a mountain. I did not see how that was done. Thanks for the video.

Hi CoderNeeded! The image next to our name is just the mountain emoji. The most effective way to use emojis as part of your GMB name is to focus on relevance. For example, if you own a pizzeria, putting a slice of pizza emoji (🍕) will help your business stand out in the local pack. With Geo-Tagging, doesn't google my business compress the exif data tag from the photos so the tag doesn't exist when it's uploaded?

The short answer is, you can still manually add certain exif data (like GPS location) to your images through tools like Exifer and others.

You can still add stars on your local search result even if you don't use Wordpress. You can get started with this Schema Markup Generator (technicalseo.com/tools/schema-markup-generator/) to display such rich results.

I enjoyed this video, and while most of the info seems great, I'm having a hell of a time implementing very much of the information here. The category search thing didn't work for me at all, even after numerous tries. Perhaps none of my competition is using numerous categories in their listings, I don't know. Moz Bar didn't work at all and has many terrible reviews, so I removed it. I also keep having trouble with my Places API key working with the Google Reviews Plugin, even though I've set the restrictions as they mention. Supposedly it's because the site I'm using is on a shared server? Some info says that there needs to be no restrictions on the keys, which makes them insecure and vulnerable to being hijacked. Consequently I cannot add the widget to my website and Google is pretty slow right now to approve changes in anything or respond to support requests due to the Corona Virus pandemic. I also don't see anywhere that I can add the Campaign URLs to my GMB listing as stated, as I can only put one URL in there at a time it seems. Could it be that much of the info in this video is outdated or that Google has changed some things and it's no longer completely relevant? It seems like so many tech videos, if they are older than about 6 months, often contain info that is no longer of any use.

Hi Curtis! Yes, we've tested this recently (March 2020) and was able to confirm that it still works. If you can't find secondary categories from your competitors, chances are, they're not using any. If you're competitors aren't using secondary categories, you can still find the most relevant to your business by using the PlePer tool: pleper.com/index.php?do=tools&sdo=gmb_categories. Just type in your primary category and it will collate similar categories for you to include. Hope this helps! ~ Team SEO Sherpa
