One thing I learned about fills is to think of them as an "intro" to the next section. So if the next section ramps up the energy, then use a high energy fill (fast, more snare, probably more cymbals, etc.). Conversely, if the next section has a lower energy, then putting in a slow fill (even using toms, add more bottom end, etc.) is a good idea.

Slamming everything at 127! lol. I try to lower everything and just raise the snare a bit. But man, slamming the snare sounds soooo good! 😅

Great advice Jonny. Personally I manage to avoid the "octopus drumming" but I'm definitely guilty of using cut and paste too often, and not introducing realistic fills at appropriate points. Lesson learnt!
