When a bank receives a note that is in poor condition, it is returned to the federal reserve and it is ultimately burned and replaced. Most notes have a short lifespan of less than 10 years. Coins circulate much longer.

Bills are cheaper to produce, but $1 bills have an average lifespan of around 6 months. Around 2000 they wanted to eliminate $1 bills and replace them with coins, although it cost 2 cents for a bill and 3 cents to mint a coin, it was estimated they would save some $850 million dollars a year by going to a $1 coin. Because of the $1 bills short working life, they are printed continuously, but a $1 coin had an estimated time in circulation of 40--50 years.

We DO have $1 coins, but they're not particularly popular and $1 bills are far more common. We used to have half-dollar coins and you can occasionally still find one, but they haven't been minted in many years now and are collectors items. US currency (bills) is printed at an amazing rate. But old bills aren't just used till they are worn out. As bills get worn out/damaged they are gathered by banks and shipped to the Treasury Department to be destroyed by burning and replaced by new bills.

For coins we have the Penny (1 cent), Nickel (5 cents), Dime (10 cents), Quarter (25 cents), Half Dollar (50 cents), and Dollar (100 cents). The latter two aren't used commonly though. The dollar coin used to be too large and when they redesigned it, the new dollar coin was too close to the size of a quarter, so people don't normally carry them since it's too easy to mistake it for a quarter. They haven't seemed to come up with a dollar coin that has caught on yet in the US.

In theory, new bills are only released to replace bills that are taken out of circulation (usually at banks) because they are well worn. However, they also have to account for bills that are damaged or lost and not returned to be replaced.

Thanks for reminding me about the way currency is made. I looked at a one dollar bill with a magnifying glass & there really are 13 lines at the top of the shield. In the lines going downward each of the dark lines are comprised of three lines each. Bills greater than a dollar have watermarks. A picture of whoever is printed on the bill that can be seen from both sides when held up to a light. The $10 and higher have numbers in the lower left part whose color shifts as you tilt them and $5 and higher have micro-printing that some areas that I can't see without a magnifier.

The foilage around the seals on the back of the dollar represent acanthus leaves, famous as carved in stone at the top of columns in the Corinthian order of classical architecture. Supposedly the style was first inspired by an architect seeing an acanthus growing up and through a votive offering by a child's grave, but I think also that it represents hope, since in winter the acanthus loses its lush green leaves and seed fronds, with only the hidden root remaining alive, to later grow and bloom again the next spring.

Also, unlike many countries, including the UK, the United States does not make ANY issued notes obsolete and are always good in circulation. So, in theory you could spend the first ever dollar bill issued called greenbacks made in the 1860s, I wouldn't recommend it since they are worth much more than their face value to collectors.

My sister in law worked in a federal bank years ago till she retired, and part of her job was to do preliminary sorting of money to remove the bills that had deteriorated to the point that it had to be destroyed. She gave us a bag of shredded money about the size of a small pillow the bank let them give out to family and friends. We have a picture of her sitting in a room with stacks of money all around her....over a million dollars she said. The room had big glass windows. There had to be three people working in the room at the same time, and you never knew till you entered each day which other two people would be in there with you. By the way. You can exchange damaged bills if you have the major parts. If you have one torn in two, you must have the largest of the two pieces to exchange for a good bill. Counterfeit money shows up now and then...usually $20 bills, but can be $5 or $10. I think $100 bills are fairly hard to pass because most people check them closely. Also, you can buy full uncut sheets of money. I don't know what denominations other than $1 you can get. I think they are about the size of a poster board like children get for school. There are $500 and $1000 bills, and I think a few larger. A friend (very rich obviously) brought in to the restaurant I used to visit ten $1000 bills to show the owner and I. He said when banks move any of these large bills, they hire private companies with guards to make the transfers. Our bills used to say, if dollars: One Dollar in Silver Payable to the Bearer on Demand. They were called Silver Certificates. However, that is not true now. The bills are still usable, but the bank does not give silver now. We also still have $2 bills, which most people don't like. Coins were mostly made of Silver untill 1964 (I think). They were then sandwiched by silver plate over copper. (I think!) And now, unless you buy collector silver coins, there is no silver in our coins. (I think! LOL) Also, I have read that it costs the government more to make a penny than each one is worth so now and then suggestions are raised to eliminate the penny.

Notes the one dollar which equals 100 pennies or cents. 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. Less common are 2-dollar, 1,000 and 10,000 notes. I believe that the go higher also. Learning about Fort Knox was also extremely revealing and shows just how protected the federal reserve is. It contains all of the US Gold reserved and is heavily defended with snipers. I believe that if someone were to bypass the external security measures then the interior measures will kick in and the vaults containing the precious metals will either fully flood themselves or release a potent toxic gas. I remember watching a documentary about it but forget which one is correct.

There used to be a saying about something that was not genuine that it was fake as a $2.00 bill. But, a number of years ago the United States mint started minting a $2.00 bill. So, the saying has been changed to fake as a $3.00 bill.

"a number of years ago" is one way to put it I guess. It's been 161 years since the first $2 bills were printed in the US.

Yes, we have a dollar coin but we rarely use it. It's called a Sacagawea coin. It's named after a famous woman in history who helped guide Lewis and Clark on their expedition to explore the Louisiana territory. She did all of that with a baby on her back.

So I'm pretty sure I have some free masons in my family. And when my dad passed away randomly. he had $13.00 in his wallet a $10 and 3 $1s Crazy. I'm still trying to put the pieces together. Also my great grandfather and my great grandmother and her 3 daughters all worked for lockheed martin. Crazy stuff. My day used to work for Boeing and McDonald Douglas making parts for the f/18 and the apache helicopters.

Actually the US still has dollar coins and 50 cent coins in circulation and they still make some from time to time it's just that you don't see them all that often and if want them you generally have to get them at a bank.

The currently minted $1 USD coin has a portrait of Susan B. Anthony on the obverse. There was a controversy over the size of the coin because it was so close to the size of the Quarter Dollar coin. Note that in Alighari's Divine Comedy, the nine levels are not in Heaven but in Hell. Dante used the same numbers as Enoch in attributing Seven Levels of Heaven and Nine Layers of Hell.

We have penny coins that are worth one cent, but they cost about 2.72 cents to make and distribute. We also have nickles worth five cents and they cost about 10.41 cents to make and distrubute!

The nickel now costs over fifteen cents to make, as nickel the metal (25% of the coin's composition; the rest is copper) is now pretty expensive.

The thing you gotta keep in mind with the 6 year lifespan is thats an average, some notes are kept in great condition and last longer but majority will be succumbed to the major cash orientated foundations: Shops, markets, bars, strip clubs. Most circulated money has spent time in one or several of these establishments.

There were a couple recent attempts to introduce dollar coins. Americans are too used to a dollar bill to use coins again, so the attempt failed. Americans use debit cards and other methods of non-cash payments these days, so it's unlikely we'll change our ways any time soon. So there's really only four circulating coins: 1, 5, 10 and 25 cents (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters). Dollar coins and half dollars are still minted, but only for annual coin sets, not as circulating money.

when money is in poor condition it is sent back to federal reserve where it is destroyed and reprinted with the same serial number but they put a star next to the serial number so it is known it has been reprinted ..they are called star notes ..some star notes with significant serial number can be collectables and quite valuable

Considering what a bill goes through, I'm actually surprised it lasts longer than a few years. People end up washing their money if the leave it in their pants pockets or left their wallet in their pants pocket. Not to mention the moisture alone during the summer when people are sweating. Other wear and tear of what a bill goes through.

There ARE $1 coins, but they have very small circulation, and are minted very rarely. 50 cent coins also exist, but are even rarer (i don't think they've been minted in decades). I'd say almost EVERY American realizes Latin is on the bill, because the phrase "E pluribus unum" is something people have long talked about.
