••• DESCRIPTION •••
In this video I discuss minimalist habits that I've adopted that have absolutely changed my life for the better. It's sometimes hard to imagine that something like being intentional with your possessions could have the power to change your life. But I believe that we are all deeply impacted by our physical space. True deep thinking and clarity of thought for me is born out of a calm and clutter free space. In this video I'll share with you the top habits I've adopted to keep my home minimal and decluttered.

••• A LITTLE ABOUT ME •••
At the end of 2018, my husband and I quit our jobs, sold our yoga studio and 90% of our possessions and moved into our 1969 VW bus. We spent 18 months traveling the globe exploring, rock climbing, adventuring and eating delicious vegan food along the way. We recently settled in Joshua Tree, CA with our pup Gypsy, and have been adjusting to a minimalist life in a house.

1. Assign everything a home. 2. Ditch the "drop zone". 3. Have fewer drawers and surfaces. 4. Pause before you purchase. 5. Create a donation station. 6. Create a trial separation station. 7. Release the "shoulds". 8. Make things easy to put away. 9. Embrace space. 10. Know it's and on-going process.

It's been 6 years minimising my belongings slowly but surely. Thankfully I don't regret a thing. Now that I've cleared at least 60% of the stuff, I declutter 1 thing a day till I don't find anything to give away. Less is certainly more.

I’m glad she mentioned less drawers. I just moved to new apartment. I have so many pots for cooking. I have less cabinets and I’m glad. I’m definitely DECLUTTERING. I started in 2019 my gracious like she stated IT’S ONGOING PROCESS. I’m ALL for minimalist living. Thanks for the video. Any tips on receipts for business owners and papers?

We live in a small home and having a place for everything makes a huge difference. I created a place for everything early on & then reduced possessions to the point where everything fit in the space. Once I had empty spaces, I started getting rid of furniture. We got rid of bedside tables & dressers early on. When we got our puppy 2.5 years ago, I got rid of the coffee table and rugs. Winters are cold here and having space to play was so much more important. Then I got rid of the couch to make space for how we used the room. With no couch, we did not need the side tables. We keep things really simple in our home. This has flowed over into our tech, our digital spaces, our schedules and more!!

Another fantastic video! I can especially relate to the part about having " expected " furniture in certain rooms. Since I spend most of my time in my living room, except when I sleep, I want that space to be as open and uncluttered as possible so for me that means a couch, a little table similar to yours, a bed for my cat, a TV and alot of open space so when the urge hits me, I can get up and dance or do work out routines to a video on TV. 😂

Totally agree with every single habit you mentioned Rebecca. I completely decluttered our rarely used guest room and made it into an extra chill out zone for the Family. It's such a lovely & peaceful space to relax now and I'm so pleased it's no longer unused real estate that we're paying for.

I love this. Specially the living room example. I do not want a tv in my living room. As a matter of fact I hate tvs altogether LOL so we only have 1in our entire house, in our kids living area . Thats were we watch shows/movies etc. but I keep it inside a closet so it cn be out of sight.

Your hair looks so good! It has grown a lot these past few weeks. I loved all the tips. And it's an everlasting vicious circle haha. Hugs from Argentina!

Taking one room and one space at a time to declutter. Having kids and being a single mom it’s not always easy to go do the big declutter. Small steps and being mindful. Sort of enjoying the process is something I’ve learnt on the way, especially as there is no end station. What I keep today might not do a lot of sense in 10 years from now. Living in a four season climate I do need to keep a bunch of stuff like overalls and hats and such even if it’s summer. And I do keep clothes so that the smaller sibling can use them down the line. It’s tricky! Would be fun to see more down to earth family minimalism.

Hey Rebecca, happy new year! Very helpful video. I'm actually using my holidays at home to clean and organize my house (even e-mail which is super annoying). We realize that table or any surface close to a door is a problem. So we move it further - something like "if I walked to the table I can walk to the right place to put that thing". Embrace the space is a good one for me as I try to use all the space in my tiny house haha thanks for reminding me I can leave a drawer empty.

I had purchased a new bed with a chest, dresser and a night stand table.... I don’t know what I was thinking at the moment maybe I went for it because of the deal. But just recently I got rid of the chest and dresser and only kept my bed and 1 night stand table. I am loving how clear, clean and simple my bedroom looks and feel. It is so easy to tidy up in the morning. All it takes me is like 10 mins every morning. 🤍

Making a permanent move from a 1500 sqft home in Northern AZ to a 1219 sqft home in the Valley. I have a minimalist wardrobe so I am okay, however, my husband is going from business attire to a retirement wardrobe. We are in the process of condensing a walk-in closet that has two dressers to a shared reach-in closet. Looks as if a closet system will be in need. Our new master bed and bath fits into our current master bedroom so it will take some getting used to the close proximity of the bathroom and entry door. I also am losing a linen closet which has allowed me to be creative by purchasing a bed that has drawers underneath for sheets and towels. Although we are losing a lot of storage opportunities , it has allowed my husband that saves everything, to embrace the liberation and ease of a minimalism. I am thrilled as so far, he has been on board with every suggestion even giving up the "drop zone" that posted at the end of my kitchen counter!

I like what you do, that was helpful! Any tips for when you decluttered an item and the next day or week, you realize that you need it? It's always happening to me... I will not use something for YEARS, decide that I don't need it anymore, and obviously, I will need it the next month or whatever. It's the main reason why I am never successful and I keep too much stuff.
@RebeccaSisson
@RebeccaSisson 3 жыл бұрын
My best advice for this is to change the questions you ask yourself when you are choosing to purge an item. I usually review the exact scenario(s) that I would use or wear that item and try and envision if those scenarios still happen often in my life. If you are often wishing you didn’t declutter items you might be a little TOO good at letting go! Also try the trial separation station I mention in the video. Hope this helps! Happy decluttering ❤️

We bought a house. The house has more rooms than our current flat. Also the house has bigger rooms than our flat. And the house has some built in storage that‘s old and will need replacement. We‘ve decided to leave all our wardrobes behind. We will bring along the rest of the furniture and live with it for a while. We will only buy new furniture once we have figured out what we and the space need. Will it look ridiculous to have a tiny couch and a mini diningtable in a 60m2 livingroom - most likely, but I want to take the time to find the perfect couch and the perfect diningtable not just buy one.

How to cure being sentimental? Whenever I try to throw sth from my past it reminds me of how long way I walked and my dog was then alive, so the object is an important piece of my history. This might be a dumb question, but how did you go about finding a smaller house? Did you move to a small town or buy something like a townhome? My biggest struggle with finding a suitable place for my boyfriend and I is size. Everything is gigantic. The first home I purchased was 1700 sq ft and it was the smallest space I could find in that area outside of getting a condo. Even though my boyfriend and I are moving in together, that's still way more space than we need but it seems that no matter where we look throughout the country (USA) our options for smaller housing is still really limited to condos/townhomes/apartments (nothing wrong with these options but with two dogs, a fenced yard is very important to us).
@morganonawhim
@morganonawhim 3 жыл бұрын
I guess this question assumes that you do actually live in a smaller space than 1700 sq ft which may not be the case, but it just seems like you've got just enough space without having too much. That's our struggle, everything is just too much!!

my clutter doesn't bother me except i don't invite people...i enjoy my alone time. I throw s lot of stuff but it seems nothing is changing so i just don't cook.. always food delivered, no utensils and plates to wash, all disposable, i don't wash clothes at home, there's a Korean laundry shop and they offer folding , which i am not good at, so for a few extra cost, i pick my laundry, smelling great, crisp and folded. But still my house is cluttered, why (?) drink bottles, my puppies and cats their bags of food, and so many bags with style.🤔. I need a helper to clean,
