Tom Cruise was my first thought for this video. His role in Collateral is easily my favourite role he's ever done. And his performance in Tropic Thunder was so transformative, I didn't even realize it was him until halfway through the movie. Two very excellent examples.

I was just going to say the same thing. I watched him the other day play Disney's The Swamp Fox in one of their old historical kids movies with the grand kids, and my daughter came in and asked, "Isn't he the Naked Airplane guy?" I love my daughter, but yes, she is a blonde.

Was just gonna add this comment myself Tom cruise is so cold and methodical on that movie, and it's phenomenal Totally an award worthy performance and as great as Jamie Foxx is in that movie as well actually earning nominations I think cruise was much more of the standout... truly one of his best performances.

He'd done that before Pig though. I also don't think Pig fundamentally shifted perceptions of him as an actor. Everyone's known since the '90s that he can do dramatic roles. Pig may have reminded people of that. But he's gone right back to the campy Cage roles since Pig.

The potshot at Bruce Willis in the beginning was a bit uncalled for given what we've learned about his health in recent years. It seems like he was only capable of appearing in roles with low time commitment and that wouldn't require a lot of effort.

I would like to say that maybe not an entirely unrealistic career move, but it was a complete tonal shift for an RDJ performance in his role in Oppenheimer. Strauss was menacing and dramatic and brought fear to anyone in the same room as him in that movie. I think he personally was my highlight of the film, and certainly a 180 inspired by the later drama of the MCU.
@winninglifeyo8 ай бұрын
Yeah RDJ broke his genre typing decades ago so not a surprise he delivered masterfully in Oppenheimer he has an electic body of work from Gothic to Chaplin to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & Tropic Thunder

For me Jennifer Aniston's breaking of typecast was best in Cake (2014). It was before Horrible Bosses. Horrible Bosses still relied on her humour and good looks - it wasn't that big of a difference from Rachel Green. Just sprinkle some 'meanness' and add a pinch of 'horny' and that's it.. Cake, however, was a complete departure - it isn't a funny movie, it's a realistic view of depression, chronic pain and grief. It doesn't play up her good looks: she looks dishevelled and scarred. It was a complete 180 from her usual characters. She did phenomenally in Cake and the fact you did not use this movie as her 'break from typecast' example, is just frankly woeful.

Consider Pat Morita who was known as a funny actor and comedian. When doing script readings for The Karate Kid, one of the people in charge didn't want to read for Pat because they thought they needed a serious actor, not a comedian. They got so desperate, they began to let everybody interested read, and the same guy in charge walks in while the rest were watching a tape of Pat Morita's audition. After saying "that guy looks like a Miyagi, who's he?", someone had to tell him "That's the guy you refused to read, sir."

"White Heat" was released 7 years after "Yankee Doodle Dandy". It marked Cagney's return to a criminal role. He also appeared in the musical "Something to Sing About" in 1937. He played a boxer in 1940, a turn of the century (19th-20th) songwriter in 1941. So, never really needed to break any typecasting.

I thought Albert Brooks was great as Marlin, but his roles in The Simpsons show and movie is what made him an incredible actor with charm and range imo. Keaton as Batman was a surprise choice for many, and he did turn out to be one of the better ones in that role. Bill Murray played a vicious gangster badly in a forgetable movie, but did go one to have success in non-comedic roles. Jennifer Lawrence in Netflix's "No hard feelings" is an entirely new screen persona for her but while as a red-blooded male I enjoyed the previously hidden assets she brought to the screen, I felt the movie was an unworthy vehicle for her.
