Sympathies to you and the family of your Brother-in-law. Thanks for high-lighting Egg. IMO, Dave Stewart can't get enough recognition. The strength of his compositional style puts him right alongside Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman and other British keyboard luminaries. Hatfield and the North, National Health and Bruford are where I feel he made his greatest mark. Also the late, great Alan Gowen.

'The Hapless Child' is a Desert Island Disc for me! Everything about it is stunning. As well as being 'doom laden' it is also incredibly funny as Gorey's poems are shot through with pathos, irony and surrealism. 'The insect God' is like 'Quatermas and the Pit' meets 'Carry on Screaming'. Who better than Robert Wyatt to carry off such lyrical ambiguities and inject his own vocal identity on each song. On 'The Sinking Spell' he sings each verse in a progressively higher key as the titular 'whatever-it-is' descends through the narrative. The musicianship, especially Rypdal, is equally impressive, as is Mantler's writing. Witty, tragic, amazing!

The Shadowfax album is great. It exists both as originally released in 1976, and in a later rerelease on Windham Hill, with some keyboard parts re-recorded. They toured as a real fusion band for years, before making the turn towards New Age in the early eighties. A compilation of bootlegs and other rarities also documented the early stuff. I’ve loved this album for a long time.

I rememeber seeing Egg in about 1971/72. It was at Bold Street Workingmen's Club in Accrington. I won that album in the raffle during the interval, sold it later to a friend of mine, who was more into it than me, at the time. They made a pleasant change from the bands we used to get, who were mainly, heavy rock/blues groups. One band that stood out were Strife

First Shadowfax album is a monster. My friend had it in the 1970s and I could never find a copy. Then years later they came out on Windham Hill and I wasn't even sure it was the same band. (Although in fairness, they did some lovely stuff for Windham Hill; just not fusion or prog). Solution's song "Divergence" (by Tom Barlage) is better known to most prog fans as "Tommy" in the Focus suite, Eruption, on Moving Waves.

Just listened to "Divergence" which is one of my favourite Jan Akkerman songs. It works well on sax as well as on guitar. I've never heard of Solution before but I'll have a listen to their stuff as I've been a Focus fan since seeing them in the early 70's.

I've been a prog fan for many years. Recently I've been sniffing around for bands that I might have missed. A recent favourite discovery is German 1970's prog band "Hoelderlin" - their second, third and fourth albums are all amazing prog (the first album is more prog-folk and is pretty good if you like that kind of thing - Mellow Candle vibes but with German language singing from a short-lived female singer. The subsequent albums are male-vocals in English.) I'm also very much enjoying a recent find, Streetmark's "Eileen" album (again from Germany) from 1977. Thanks to Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, for introducing me to this band via one of thier amazing compilation albums. I am also duty bound to mention (imo) one of the greatest 'lesser-known' prog bands, Crack The Sky (USA). Keep diggin' in those crates fellow sonic-adventurers ... there's a whole universe to explore! Klaatu, Ultimate Spinach, Circulus, East of Eden, I'd also recommend. "The only thing that's important is if it moves you or not." - Roger W ---- thanks for another great video Andy. So sorry for your loss. (glad I ferreted so I could add this) love & light mate

Crack the Sky rules. They don’t sound like any other prog band at all to me. Truely progressive. They bizarre way they choose to loop certain sections with unpredictable starting points almost reminds me of people scratching and manually manipulating a loop with turntables decades later

Hey, great video. Man, how do i make this psychologically not seem like its going to be another one of those dead end vintage prog recommendations. Because, after all, the people who make them never think they're doing it. Ha. Which statistically, i could be. Well here goes. And since we're on the subject of buddie's bands, i have an older musician friend that i had done many gigs with before discovering that he (drums) and his brother in law (keys/composer) were in a prog band in the late 70s/early 80s called Master Cylinder. Another friend had actually told me about it and played some for me back in the 90s. Was bliwn away, notnonly by how legit it sounded but also by how it transcended the town we are from, Ft. Worth TX. Where the west begins, and start of the Chisolm Trail cattle drive. Cant believe how naturally British it sounds. Canterbury, in fact. Could easily be a lost classic from that scene. They did one release called Elsewhere through a NYC label. They recorded a follow up but the label went bust and the next album sits unreleased to this day. Supposedly even better/proggier. Here's a link. I truly hopebyou read this, decide to listen and enjoy it. Thanks kzfaq.info/get/bejne/osVmndCiqry1aJ8.htmlsi=dPRU_cejJ1iTOs5f

Glad you mentioned Egg.. I remember working in the shipyard back in the mid 80s and a bloke was always going on about them. I only got around to hearing that Civil Surface LP a few years back... "A visit to Newport Hospital" is just incredible... also "I will be Absorbed" from their first LP is wonderful... I prefer them to any classic prog rock group. Two other LPs I like which I discovered via Napster are "Space Guerilla" by Missus Beastly and "We Keep On" from Embryo...

Glad you mentioned Missus Beastly and Embryo, two very important Krautrock bands! Note that Missus Beastly issued two self-titled albums, one in 1969/70 and one in 74 (with the drawing of an ape on the cover). besides the second one, also "Dr. Aftershave And The Mixed Pickles - For Missus Beastly" and "1974 SWF Sessions" certainly qualifies as prog. I read/heard somewhere that the band's name was a word play on Buffy's doll "Mrs Beasly" from the US tv-show "Family Affair" that also aired in Germany in the late 60's under the name "Lieber Onkel Bill". Not sure if this is true, though. Concerning Embryo, check out "Embryo's Rache" from 1971.

In case no one has commented yet - Egg originally had Steve Hillage, but they were called Azrachel. They recorded 1 album, and Steve left for University. They released 2 albums and broke up. Meanwhile, Steve left school and formed Khan, which Dave Stewart guested on. Dave joined Hatfield and the North. After their first album, Egg reunited briefly just to record the third album, but there wasn't enough material, so they added Mont's Wind Quartets. I got Shadowfax right when it first came out, and saw them live later when they were prog/new age/jazz/folk. I was very impressed with Phi's stuff! Very cool, thanks!

To be absolutely accurate, the pre-Egg band with Hillage alongside the other three was called Uriel - it even continued as that for a bit after Hillage had left. Then a few months later Egg were offered to record a psych album and thought the money would help, but as they had signed with Deram, had to do it under an assumed name, and to further disguise their identity, asked Hillage along. This came out as Arzachel, but was never an active band.

@47.00 Egg made three albums, Egg, The Polite Force and The Civil Surface. I saw them at birmingahm Town Hall supporting The groundhogs (Clive Brooks then replaced Ken Pustelnik on drums for the Hogs on the albums Hogwash and Solid). Solid Prog, i.e. classical music fused with Rock, Both Mont Campbell and Dave Stewart were classically trained musicians. Dave Stewart was the first guy I saw using a ribbon synth modulator which he used as he jumped into the audience and frightened young persons with wild screaming wailing synth.

Solution was one of the three more well known Canterbury influenced Dutch groups. The other two were Alquin and Supersister. Especially Supersister was spectacular. All their albums are great. Other Dutch progbands from high quality who did not reach the fame of Focus but were equally great imho are Finch and Trace. In America there is a band equally unknown than Good God. Very young guys whom made two albums in the mid seventies: Yezda Urfa. Check out their second album Sacred Babboon. In Indonesia there was a progband called Discus. Also in this case their second album is their best: Tot licht. And then there is the American band Pocket Orchestra. Insane Jazzrock/Rio/ progrock/ modern classical/ Zappa-esque stuff. And of course the greatest 'Canterbury'band from Wahington DC: The Muffins.

It's the one I keep going back to more than the other two. Being a huge fan of The Canterbury scene, I want to give a bit of love to another band that often gets overlooked - Gilgamesh. Can't go wrong with them either. P.S. Egg's complete catalogue was beautifully re-mastered about a decade ago and the cd's are still reasonably priced and available. The vinyls are much harder to get and much more expensive. The Compact Discs sound much better anyway.

It's about the history of ECM records. There is an exelent rewiev of the album there and you might find other interesting ECM stuff as well.

Have you ever done a video on all the Canterbury scene bands from the 70s, such as National Health, Egg, Gilgamesh, etc....

Mythos were pretty good, but the first Oblivion, Shadowfax and Good God albums are great. Egg is just classic, very early pioneers of the Canterbury scene and I'm sure you know of Arzachel which is pre-Egg with Hillage.

The first Ginger Bakers Air Force. Recorded live with Steve Winwood, Graham Bond, Rick Grech and a bunch of others. Probably more jazzy than prog. If you think Neil Peart is a great drummer listen to this.

With the chance for repeating myself, but I know you get so many messages, I was wondering if you Andy ever have heard the Charlie Mariano album “12 Helen trees”? It got a who’s who of Jazz-rock on it, as; Jan Hammer, Jack Bruce, the late John Marshall and Zbigniew Seifert. It’s worth listening to anyway. Thank you for all the great and sometime silly content. Good day to you Sir!

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Zbigniew Seifert is also featured on Joachim Kühn's "Spring Fever" from 1976 and had his own major label release"Man Of The Light" in 1977. Particularly moving is his Solo Violin concert in Bremen 1976, issued in 1978. He very sadly succumbed to cancer in 1979 at the age of 32 :-( How about a future episode on the 10 best electric Jazz/Fusion violinists? Jan-Luc Ponty, Don Sugar Cane Harris, Jerry Goodman, Michal Urbaniak, Zbigniew Seifert, Eddie Jobson, Simon House, Darryl Way, Didier Lockwood...
