Butterflies are so beautiful. Several years ago some friends & I were hanging out next to a small stream when something nearby on the shore caught our attention. Upon closer inspection we realized it was a mass of monarch butterflies just chilling out opening & closing their wings. After about 10 minutes they all took flight together. It was one of the most magical events I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. I'll never forget it.

A swarm of Monarchs came through my backyard in SoCal. about 5-6 months ago ( about March/April, 2019 ). They must have come back from a migration - there were thousands of them. Some stopped in my neighbors orange tree, some landed all over my back yard, but most kind of appeared out of nowhere, all from the same direction, and just kept going North West. Truly unreal how they just appeared seemingly out of nowhere visible for a short time, then disappeared as they left my yard. Truly magical :)

jocko john, I saw them, too, for a couple of days. I stopped driving, there were so many, and I didn’t want to kill any. Edit: Don’t you see them every year? There’s a grove of Eucalyptus trees they like, up in Santa Barbara county.

No you wouldn’t. You’d go crazy. Too much butterflies, they could possibly eat you. They’re pretty in looks (not for me) but are gonna be disgusting if you keep living with them.

@@georginacox3909 That's right!!! Everyone can do their part and plant milkweed and quit using toxic herbicides and pesticides. Make sure if you purchase milkweed, AKA "butterfly bush", make sure the nursery you get it from dose not use pesticides on it. If you have a section of your yard to spare, plant a butterfly garden with native plants to your area.

I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and the beautiful Monarch Butterfly is native to this area. He mentioned the name “Milkweed”, that’s because these butterflies love the milky white fluid that oozes out of the plant.. So if you live in this part of Pennsylvania and want to attract the Monarch Butterfly to your garden, plant plenty of the Milkweed plant and once they know where it’s growing, they’re come back to your garden every year, especially before they migrate.

They actually feed on milkweed as caterpillar and use the milky substance as a defense mechanism. As adults, they drink the nectar 💜

If you think about their entire life (caterpillar to adult) they actually live 1-2 years. So that's pretty good for an insect.

We see big beautiful Birdwings, male and female, floating through the gardens on a regular basis. The fast flying Dunk, with its electric blue wings, visits its food tree out the front. I marvel each time I see a butterfly - what wonders they are!

Even if you don't have formal training as an entomologist, you can still study and enjoy insects. There are groups, such as iNaturalist, for which you can post observations and contribute to our knowledge of insects. I have two degrees in entomology and have made it the main part of my career, but I learn a lot from people who simply have an interest, make observations and share what they've seen.

I raise monarch's so of course I am partial to those beautiful being's. I released around 160 last summer, and this summer ( 2019) I released roughly around 200 healthy beautiful majestic butterflies. They are an honor to raise and release. Please plant your milkweed! When milkweed flowers, there honestly is no prettier heavenly scent.

When my daughter was little we used to have a butterfly habitat, we set 3 rounds of them free in our yard.They are beautiful gifts of nature. We had plenty of flowers available for them. The butterflies were yellow.The Blue Morph and Monarch are my favorites.

first look into butterfly collections. In asia the export of butterfly pupa has led to saving of ecosystems because the people there can make money by breeding butterflies instead of destroying the forest for crops.

Also I'm pretty sure they wait until the butterflies are dead until they just pin them to a board. Like they find them dead in the wild.

Wow ! My wife loves the swallowtails. She tries to plant flowers that will attract butterfly’s in our backyard . There is an island off Japan that she would love to visit that has many butterflies 🦋 of all kinds…..

HOLY MOLY!!! These are fabulous. The Bird Wing Butterfly is about the coolest creature I ever saw next to the hummingbird moth, which I actually saw in person in the mountains of Oregon.

We see Birdwings often in our garden in Townsville. They are one of my favourites, we also have a beautiful, fast-flying, Dunk Island butterfly - wings are electric blue as they flash past!

I love the blue Morpho. Fredrik Meijer Gardens have them in their butterfly house. They have many different butterflies from Africa & Asia. I also love the swallowtails & the monarch.
