It's all done via Bluetooth and is computerized. The have a bunch of Bluetooth receivers/transmitters throughout the crowd. Once the lightsticks are registered, they all act as one unit, going on and off, changing color according to what the computer says for that crowd section.

SHINee definitely has one of the prettiest oceans in kpop but I think BIG BANG has the coolest light stick. Exo did have an amazing concept with their light sticks and fans and how exols had to follow along.
