Some people are probably butthurt about Mikael being #1 again but he's one of the only people that doesn't make clean singing cheesy in death metal (or metal in general for that reason). It's classy and sincere. He is an absolute genius.

@@eljas7599 Poprock? Because Ghost wrote around 3 songs that could be classified as poprock it's now a poprock band? I guess any metal band with ballads make them a ballad band then, ignoring that 90% of their catalogue is metal. Majority of Ghost's songs are classic heavy metal, same heaviness and style to bands like Ozzy, Black Sabbath, etc.

This is why I love melodic death metal. Heavy instrumentals and a mix of vocals between guttural and clean. It takes amazing skill to be able to do both.

While for "beautiful voices" that's certainly an easy pick .... I think you're right! Most terrifying death growls? Arguably, yes! Most ground-breaking and progressive? Again, arguably, yes! Heaviest riffs? Shit, yes, again??? :)

It's interchangeable between him and Chuck Schuldiner. In any Death metal list, you can make a case for either being number 1.

@@mohammadalzaghal3145 Well, I wouldn't in terms of clean vocals, or even death growls, but Chuck is such a ground-breaking musician, he's kind of like Black Sabbath: you can always put him #1 and just say he did it first. :)

@@andrewhart9310 I guess when it comes to composition, song writing and lyrics, Chuck would win due to his influence and just how damn good he is, but when it comes to clean vocals, growls and progressive composition, Mikael wins. I still think they are both equally deserving of number 1 in any Death metal list (with the exception of clean vocals, as Chuck doesn't fit that criteria).

I think it's a very good choice, too. Ne Obliviscaris is, to me, the most obvious successor to what Opeth was doing in the progressive death metal scene.

I think That niilo from insomnium is the best growler in the metal scene. He's aggressive, really clean (you can understand every single word) and so melodic too. Love it!

Personally, I likeTomi Joutsens voice best, followed by Mikkael Stanne, and then Mikael Akerfeldt - so a little twist in the order of the voices, but with Dark Trankquility, Amorphis and Opeth being no 1, 2, and 3, and can absolutely agree.

Well .... more or less, yes. I've been blown away by some death metal growls, and combined with the music, can make for a truly beautiful sound (Insomnium, Opeth, Amon Amarth, DT). But the voice itself? If you're arguing against the (obviously subjective) concept that death growls aren't, by themselves, inherently beautiful, then I have to assume you're just taking the piss.

Sure they are death metal, but not in the tradicional style. Opeth for example, are prog DM, because they have gutural vocals, heavy and dissonant riffs and a dark atmosphere, but rarely they will use tremolo picking fast riffs and blast beats. It's just a different type of DM.

Death metal as a whole is a pretty broad genre, there's plenty of subgenres that feature cleans.

Dan Swano is one of the original innovators of Melodic/Progressive Death Metal (yes even before Opeth) and is rarely if ever mentioned pretty embarrassing tbh but I also get picking more popular artists because more people know of them but Dan deserves to be just as popular if not more than any of the bands on this list

I'd say the bass player in Fleshgod Apocalypse. When he does vocals its amazing. His performance in the chorus of "the fool" is excellent

None of it is typical DM, it features prog, melodic, and/or symphonic DM. Swallow the Sun is "funeral doom" which mixes death-doom with funeral dirge music.

Sotiris Anunnaki is definitely a beautiful voice. While Seth Is commanding in Septicflesh with his harsh vocals, Sotiris adds a somber tranquility. He should be featured more honestly
