Heather Taylor Look up the crime rates for your area, specifically homicides. I can almost guarantee you'll be unpleasantly surprised by the number you find. Sometimes areas will include maps that mark the locations of local homicides and THAT can throw an entire anchor into your sleeping schedule. I mean think about it, the 19 people killed in Salem during the witch trials are pretty insignificant when compared to the amount of murders that have been committed in any decent sized city in the past month alone, or even to the murders committed during other witch trials. Salem wasn't the first, the largest or the cruellest of the witch hunts. Not even close. So why should Salem be considered more spooky than any other place. You could argue that the methods and reasons for the Salem killings make it stand out among typical murders, but that doesn't make sense to me either, even if I ignore the existence of every other witch trial besides Salem. Being crushed or burned or drowned like the accused witches is a pretty terrible way to die but even that pales in comparison to the heinous and morbidly grotesque ways people have come up with to inflict a lethal dose of prolonged pain. At least in Salem the murders were (wrongfully) sanctioned at the time because they believed that there was a legitimate reason to be afraid. These days there are people that torture and murder others simply because the idea happened to occur to them. I mean, shouldn't large swathes of land all over the United States be swarming with random spooky stuff just because of the sheer number of vengeful/hateful tortures and murders that occured shortly after this continent was "discovered"? Oh well =\ I guess it doesn't really matter anyways. I've been all over the states, including to Salem, and the only time in my life I have ever thought that I saw something supernatural I was in the living room of my own house on the opposite side of the nation from Salem . The displays of torture methods were interesting, I remember the mannequin man being slowly crushed under stone while begging for them to add more weight to just end it. The above ground graves with multiple bodies in them were pretty odd as well.

Alcatraz is part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area, which is part of the National Park system. It is still very much open for tours daily. I live in Oakland - see the boats goi g frequently to Alcatraz everyday. Great tour, by the way.
