I was in the last years of my heroin addiction and viewed Requiem for a Dream at the theater in 2000. I was literally speechless for hours after. Besides the subject matter this is one of the most powerful and well directed films of all time, don't forget the master class of cinematography as well. Watched it several times since. Definitely one of my personal top ten films of my 53 years of being a movie lover.

I used to drugs in high school and saw Requiem for Dream the fall after I graduated. After watching it I never touched anything harder than a Tylenol and even then rarely. It totally shifted my perspective of drugs.

My No. 11 - Salò or The 120 Days of Sodom. I watched it once when I bought the DVD years ago and was both nauseated and impressed. It needs to be seen by all those progressive activists who mindlessly accuse others of being 'fascist' without having researched what fascism actually is. But whenever I think it's time to see it again myself I find I'm not ready to. Requiem for a Dream is a masterpiece - I've seen it three times and know I'll see it again. With AA, it helps keep me sober when I'm tempted to go back on the booze.

Titane came out in 2021, not 1997. Great film. I'd recommend Gaspar Noe's Enter The Void. Straight-up masterpiece.

Requiem for a Dream made me never want to take drugs again. And I'm not talking hard drugs; I'm talking Tylenol. Easily the most depressing movie I've ever seen.

As a former addict i saw Requim and some of the sences in that movie were surreal. Looking at the movie being sober for a few years you dont realize how addiction can truly affect the people around you because you just want to get that high. I think this is a movie that should be shown in high schools because kids need to see the affect drugs has to themselves and the people they love.

Henry portrait of a serial killer should be on this list. One of the most disturbing movies ever.

You missed some of the all-time classics! Any list like this has to include at least one or two of the following: I Spit on your Grave, Faces of Death 1, Love Strange Love, Caligula, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, or the most notorious film in history, Snuff. I worked in a couple of video stores in the 80s, and we had entire sections of so-called "banned" movies. If I remember correctly, the industry term was "video nasty."

I don't think you give enough credit to Serbian. It is very well made and 100% effective with the story. If it didn't have good story, characters, and plot it would be just be a shock movie with no impact. I have seen plenty of brutal movie and got done And was laughable and had no impact. Serbian film messed me up for like a week.

When you say Serbian Film is just upsetting and does nothing else that's a massive oversight of how AMAZING the acting was from the lead actor. Its some of the best acting I've ever seen. A lot of the side characters were typical grindhouse level but imo that movie would just be another forgettable shock movie without him.

Yesss, I loved Midsommar! Glad I finally caught up on that one ... and I have to concur, the original Funny Games is absolute gold. If I may, one suggestion is a banger from my hometown: Snowtown (although I think it was marketed in the US as "The Snowtown Murders").

I loved how you didn’t just put the same old disturbing ones (I know a Serbian film is on here) but you kind of have too have it on. The new editions like kill list and requiem for a dream I wholeheartedly agree with those. The one I was surprised on was Mulholland Drive, it’s atmospheric and has that disturbing mental anguish you mentioned, but I honestly thought you were going to choose Wild at Heart. Either way, great list.

Thanks for the great video and recommendations. I’m sure people with throw in their choices that you should’ve had, and here’s mine - With David Lynch, you could’ve put in his first feature film Eraserhead (1977) and/or Blue Velvet (1986) and you would not be wrong with either or both. Have to include David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers (1988) and not much can beat it for being sick, twisted and disgusting body horror. Dead Ringers got turned into a TV series that streamed last year. I haven’t seen it, but I understand that it’s pretty good and doesn’t disappoint with the sick and messed up factor. You could’ve included Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1972) which totally outraged people back in the day with its depiction of violence, rape, and more violence. When I was just a kid in college, me and a bunch of other kids got to see a preview for Clockwork Orange in Hollywood and people in the audience lost their shit. Some even walked out. After the movie we had a sit down with a couple Hollywood old schoolers and they went completely nuts about how bad the movie was and that it was the end of Kubrick’s career in the movies. Of course everybody was wrong and it’s become a classic, even though it’s pretty crazy even by today’s movie standards. You could’ve included a French-Belgian movie called Man Bites Dog (1992). It’s about a hit man who’s followed by a documentary film crew, and there’s just about every insane, disgusting, nauseating and nasty thing that you can imagine that anybody would dare to put on film. This is one foreign film that I can guarantee that Hollywood will never, ever make, because it’s got stuff that will freak you out. It’s in all Black & White which may make it a little more palatable for some people. It’s also got English subtitles. It’s not the kind of movie you want to learn French with. Believe me. Finally, there’s 13 Tzameti (2005) which is another French language film made by young director Gela Babluani. This is a really sick, f-d up 95 minutes of just wild shit. It’s got a crazy story, a serious body count, and it’s also in B&W just to add to the overall grimness of things. Definitely not what you’d want to watch on a date night with Schindler’s List on the bill. Brad Pitt’s production company remade the movie with the original director in 2010, and the Hollywood influence completely ruined it. I don’t even know if Babluani is even making movies, because his experience with the Hollywood way of doing things had to really suck. Only place I know where to find 13 Tzameti is the used DVD market online, like eBay. It’s really worth watching. Just don’t watch it at night, if you’re depressed, or if you’ve spent all day drinking. It’s a great movie if you have the time, stomach and mental stability to watch it.

Requiem for a Dream Is from a book by Hubert Selby Jr. which like the movie is very disturbing. He also wrote "Last Exit to Brooklyn" which was made into a movie staring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Stephen Lang. Selby has a cameo in Requiem and the haunting music is performed by the Kronos Quartet.

Midsommar made me furious. I didn't know what I was getting into and by the time I was as disgusted, repulsed and angry as I've ever been watching a film, it was too late. Mulholland Drive, however, has always been on my rewatch list. I just didn't get it the first time around and have always wanted to finish that particular puzzle. Just as i was wondering if Irreversible was gonna make the list, BAM! Gaspar Noe' is incredible, his follow-up 'Enter the Void* is just WILD.. Although my g/f, having lived in Japan, got annoyed with the cop shooting in the beginning...as they dont carry guns. But visually its astounding. Also you should checkout Afterbirth w/ Natasha Lyonne...talk about W.T...F??

Requiem for a Dream deserves top spot for sure! I own it but have only watched it twice. If you watch it just be ready to put something light on after as a palate cleanser.

My wife and I saw Serbian Film in a one-time only showing in California. The owner of Unearthed Films (Stephen Biro) bought the rights to Serbian Film. Showed it once. The director was there and the lady who played the mother. I asked the director about a quote he made once he repeated it earnestly. He said, sometging to the effect of. We had a choice to make a documentary about life in Serbia that no one would watch or make a disturbing drama that brings our metaphors to life. Basically, life in Serbia is like being ra*ped from birth, and it doesn't stop even in death.

Funny Games remake but by the same director . Michael Haneke. almost all his filmography interesting to watch.

I call it "Requeem for a Dream" & I completely agree, I saw this happening when the movie came out & it really hits home for me. It's like "Idiocracy" in it's prophetic after thoughts. You actually see what is happening that everyone refuses to talk about or coarse correct.

I saw A Serbian Film here on KZfaq a few years ago. They also had Salo and Cannibal Holocaust. I really enjoyed Midsommar. I'm a Pagan who loves folk horror. I haven't seen Requiem for a Dream yet, but the book is really good.

The 2017 movie Trauma by Lucio A. Rojas has been compared to A Serbian Film. I don't know if I would go quite that far but it's definitely up there. It's on Tubi right now. There is more than one movie with the same title so I included the year and the director. Another movie I never see on disturbing movie lists is Nothing Bad Can Happen. It's a very dark and depressing movie that can be an uncomfortable watch.

Your right about Martyrs, I saw this years ago on netflix and bought a copy just to freak out friends who think horror is just gore and boy is this not that.. Irreversable is cool as you see the endgame way before the reason of it and it is sick. Have not seen the rest of this list but I am curious so just maybe,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Good choices! Some disturbing films I would recommend: Come and See by Elem Klimov, Green Room by Jeremy Saulnier, Antichrist by Lars Von Trier, and Inside by Alexandre Bustillo. In addition a lot of David Cronenberg's films like Dead Ringers, The Fly etc. are somewhat disturbing and would highly recommend.

Not sure if you’ve recommended this particular film in the past, but Fall Time with Mickey Rourke and Steven Baldwin is awesome!! I stumbled across years ago and I loved it! The premise was really cool and it wasn’t a high budget film or anything. It’s one of those movies that has a story that grabs you right from the beginning and things get pretty crazy.

Perhaps I am just a big dumb oaf but I truly thought that Mulholland Drive was tedious and looked like the work of someone trying way too hard to be artsy in the place of crafting a better way to get the job done.

I remember hearing about "A Serbian Movie". So, I went looking for it. Found it on a torrent site. Downloaded it. Started watching it. Yeah, it was disturbing but no big deal I thought. But then, the scene with the baby hit... I immediately stopped it, deleted it. That was the first time EVER, I thought to myself: "Yep. They went TOO far on that one." Anyway, I also saw Martyrs, yes GREAT movie. Disturbing for sure, but much more watchable than "A Serbian Movie". This was the 2nd video of yours that I've watched, I enjoy your work. Great video, dunno what it says about me that I've seen 8/10 on the list. Whole requiem for a dream is a fantastic film I don't consider extreme in the same way as the other films on this list. I'd probably put something like Inside or Dogtooth in it's place.

Mulholland Drive is one of my all time favourite films, I think how I personally interpret the film is what resonates with me, not necessarily what Lynch’s intentions were. Which I think was the whole point. Great video, thank you!

You covered the two that I had the toughest time with: Martyrs and A Serbian Film. I mentioned it elsewhere on KZfaq, but I got to a certain point in Martyrs and had a panic attack (I'm susceptible to those, so it wasn't a huge shock). A week later I resumed the movie and before long had another panic attack. After that I decided to just READ about how it ended! And, in retrospect, A Serbian Film was a cakewalk by comparison.

Good list Darren. Martyrs is the yardstick by which I measure all other horror films; followed closely by Hereditary and Midsommar. Hard Candy was amazing, really brutal. Mulholland Drive was also great and easily my favorite Lynch film although Lost Highway is a close 2nd. Still haven't seen Requiem for a Dream, but I will. A Serbian film was disgusting, brutal and disturbing but actually more well done than I was led to believe.

This is my kind of list, considering I've already seen 6/10 of these. I clicked because I recognized Irreversible and wanted to know the rest. I agree about Requiem for a Dream (although I would have put it at number 3) - I watched it shortly after it came out and it took 10 years before I was willing to watch it a second time. There will not be a third. Irreversible I would have put first. Every scene is one long take, no cuts, well done. The interesting thing about the order being backwards is you see a violent crime, then the crime that caused it (the rape), and then you see why it is so heartbreaking. Really sticks with you. You gotta be in a certain mood to watch that one. Midsommar is just completely brilliant. Everyone should watch it. I put off watching because I heard it was gory and I have to be in a certain mood for that. It wasn't! I regret not seeing it sooner! 10/10 will rewatch.

Mulholland Drive does stick to you. I watched it once out of curiosity, again in film school, and was still drawn to it after that, so I bought it.

Requiem for a dream is definitely the most hard to watch/rewatch movie. Saw it twice with about 10 years in between each viewings and it was just as brutal. Horrific masterpiece. And you are absolutely right about how vividly i/you remember this movie, down to insignificant details. Thats how hard this movie hits. Absolutely brutal.

Mulholland Drive requires you watch a video that explains it. There are several, but not all do it well. Worth the explanation. Makes the movie even better.

While remakes are often derided (and with good reason) the important thing to know about Funny Games is that the American remake was written and directed by the same guy as the original. Michael Haneke intentionally made a more or less shot-for-shot English version of his own film.

i watched irreversible in film school, and goddamn that movie is so raw. once we get to the end (beginning) the loving embrace is so uncomfortable and really forces you to be empathetic for victims. i recently watched a movie that has not left me and i recommend it but i also dont at the same time for how emotionally taxing it was is "nothing bad can happen" definitely watch at your own risk

According to the dir, A Serbian Film had an allegorical message regarding the Balkans civil war. Also, Funny Games remake was remade shot-4-shot by Haneke, which is unusual. Both excellent films.

I think the thing that made Funny Games distressing and disturbing for me when I first watched it was that "Remote" scene, my jaw legit dropped when that happened, but when I rewatched it recently, I actually thought it was a stroke of genius for metaphor that Psychopaths don't play by the rules of the world. Also, you should check Audition, Bedevilled (2010) and Man Bites Dog....and Vortex if you're a Noe fan, not really disturbing in the same sense that Irreversible or I Stand Alone is but if definitely leaves existentially crushed by its end.

11:05 that fact is hardest but important to remember in the very first scene of the film. Even though I think I knew it was in reverse, it didn't dawn on me what I was seeing until the movie finished, OR maybe Im just not quick on the uptake.

Man, martyrs is one of my highly recommended movies, i love movies like it that knows what you are thinking while ur watching it, then flips it over your head, almost like an interactive medium, the only other movie that does that for me is the game
