There are so many sightseeing trains in Japan in these days. I will show you 10 most popular sightseeing trains. This ranking was created by the ranking of two major travel agencies sites, three major travel websites and my ranking.
I just want to let you know my personal choices:

I've travelled by Resort Shirakami and SL Yamaguchi. I also liked SL Ginga (Iwate), and SL Banetsu Monogatari (Niitsu to Aizu-Wakamatsu). Fruitea is also nice in autumn (Kitakata to Koriyama one) had once got a chance to get on the Anpanman truck-train and cross the Seto-Ohashi.

Another nice video Takeshi san! May i suggest some? 1) Maybe the Isaburo-Shinpei? It is the sightseeing train with switch-backs and the famous Masaki station, and beautiful scenery climbing up the mountain! 2) Odakyu Hakone Tozan railway is very interesting too, with several swtich backs tight turns and interesting hill climb! 3) Resort Furusato - it was ranked one of the best train views in Japan! 4) La Malle de Bois - to cross the massive Seto-Ohashi to Shikoku in style!

Oh, La Malle de Bois from JR West is sort of a hidden tourist train, not sure why it was launched, but it seems like a nice gateway to the seaside next to the Seto Inland Sea. Also, the train does not cross into Shikoku, it runs on a line parallel to the Honshu - Shikoku Line and it terminate at a station near the Seto Inland Sea on the mainland.

I recommend the Aso Boy, running from Kumamoto to Aso, in Kyushu.

I have three recommendations, each for different reasons (in no particular order): High Rail 'Hoshizora', for the onboard planetarium and unique experience at Nobeyama; Ryuhyo Monogatari for the drift ice scenery (and if you pair it with the rapid service through to/from Kushiro you can see red-crowned cranes too); and the Shu*Kura for both the Sea of Japan scenery and the onboard experience with local sake :). These trains are easy to use and get tickets for as well - I was able to book High Rail Hoshizora on the old JR East online reservation system in English before travelling to Japan.

@@magnustan841 I sure am - The evening service is named 'Hoshizora' ('Starry Sky') rather than having a service number. When I went in deep winter, it was snowy, freezing cold and overcast so we could not see the stars, but all the same there was a short presentation at Nobeyama Station. It perfectly complemented a day starting in Kawaguchiko, with an afternoon visit to the Suntory Hakushu distillery and finishing in Nagano overnight.

Does anyone know if these are covered by the JRPass? Or how to find out easily which trains are covered and which require separate ticket reservation.
