For four seasons on Cartoon Network, Courage the Cowardly Dog either provided dark, surreal humor for savvy kids or scared the hell out of children everywhere, depending upon whom you ask. While the show was genuinely hilarious, featuring outstanding writing and character design, its horror elements provided plenty of clean-burning nightmare fuel for the more impressionable members of its audience.
Despite being a complete coward, Courage always managed to save the day and usually keep his owners, Muriel and Eustace Bagge, in the dark about whatever horrifying danger had been averted. While some of the characters he encountered were just misunderstood, some were frighteningly malicious- and nearly all were creepy as hell. Here are ten of the creepiest.

Courage the Cowardly Dog is an American animated horror comedy television series created by John R. Dilworth for Cartoon Network as part of the network's Cartoon Cartoons block. It follows a purple anthropomorphic beagle who lives with a married elderly couple in the middle of Nowhere. The trio are frequently thrown into bizarre misadventures, often involving the paranormal/supernatural. The series is known for its dark, surreal humor and atmosphere.
Dilworth pitched the series to Hanna-Barbera's animated shorts showcase What a Cartoon!, and a pilot (entitled "The Chicken from Outer Space") aired on Cartoon Network in early 1996. The segment was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to Wallace and Gromit's A Close Shave. Cartoon Network greenlit a series from the short, which premiered on November 12, 1999 and ended on November 22, 2002, with four seasons of 13 episodes each produced. During its run, the series was nominated for 3 Golden Reel Awards and 1 Annie Award. Spin-off media include home video releases and collectible toys.

I never thought of Fred as a pedophile. I always thought "shaving" was a watered down version of what they were really hinting at - beheading. Watch the episode again with the thought that shaving people's heads really meant chopping off people's heads and you'll see what I mean. This would make sense why he's actually meant to be in an insane asylum. Pedophilia only puts you in prison.

The genius behind the scares in this show is awesome. All the monsters (Perfect guy, violin girl, the head, Ramses, the tree, etc.) are all usually first and most often shown all by themselves, centred on the screen, with some kind of surreal/uncanny background. Coupled with some form of animation that isn't commonly shown in the show, (Cgi, etc.). You just can't look away from it, you have to face it. I guess this show actually does teach kids real courage after all.

Spirit of the Harvest Moon is the one who freaked me out the most. I actually had nightmares for a really long time because of that character. Just thinking about him still sends shivers down my spine and I'm 19 (good job, Dilworth, you actually managed to scar someone).

King Ramses I would say is the scariest spirit. I can hardly even look at him or hear his voice without freaking out. Other than that, the rest of the show was just fine. This was my top favourite show as a kid and I still admire it and enjoy it to this day. Fred also reminds me a little bit of Kevin from Desery Bluffs. I think it's the smile, for sure the smile.

Yeah and the fact that he scared my father's 3 cousins: Jair who was a cop for over 40 years, Hernando & Mirabel who were in the army for over 40 years, and my best friend's grandfather who fought in the Vietnam War(and they had torturous booby traps for the US soldiers) speaks volumes about how terrifying he is.

People think that there are no monsters in the show or anything, it's how a dog sees the world and him saving everyone is just his perception of how things happen.

i think a few of the "monsters" were legit, like King Ramses. Look at how the people react to him, Muriel is genuinely terrified of him unlike most of the "monsters" for instance. I think Fred was an unstable barber or maybe something worse, and the Mask Kat was simply an abused woman along with Bunny. The hunchback? Probably was really like that and Courage didn't imagine him that way. Btw, most of the regular people Courage meets look normal. Di Lung, the farmers, that general person, the short guy, etc. There's holes in this idea but it does make some sense.
