It’s not Harry Potter. How come you release a spin-off once all of the Harry Potter movies dominated the box office?

For The Flash, the sheer number of delays and rewrites is understated here. Not to mention the inevitable comparisons to both the CW Flash series and the animated Flashpoint Paradox film. For the Marvels, you missed one very big factors: the fact that certain audiences felt robbed by the original Captain Marvel film as it had been set up as a necessary watch ahead of Avengers Endgame, thus pulling in over a billion dollars at the box office only for audiences to realize how little impact it had. With the main tie-ins for this film being three separate Disney+ shows, the only way that many people were coming to watch was if they expected that something in the story would permanently change the MCU as we know it.

Yeah, I don't have high hopes for Kraven either. You can't make films like you did in early 2000's in post MCU times. Venom at least turned out OK because of a charismatic lead and a popular side character. But most people probably never heard of MW & M.

No. It’s just that the movies have no direction. They aren’t “shit.” They just don’t have anything tying them together like a major bad guy (Thanos) or some thing (Infinity Stones). The movies and shows aren’t bad, mostly. But they suffer from a lack of direction. When you get rid of all of the main heroes (and one actor who passed away) from the inception of the MCU, you are left with B-tier (or lesser tier) characters. And just like the comic they’re based on they have their fans. But the casual movie goers aren’t going to watch because why should they? If they were setting up a major comic storyline, you know people would be out at every movie and it would be a blockbuster. But the MCU is doing what the comics normally do: just meandering doing their own thing. And movie goers don’t want to just go see a movie as a one and done after what the MCU set up prior to Endgame.

@darth_smooth81

@@mullerpotgieter: nothing I said was garbage. Guardians became popular and was on the 3rd movie in that franchise. So of course it was going to be successful. And Spiderman is one of the last actual A-listers from the pre-Endgame era. So of course they’re going to be blockbusters. If there was no glue tying the original pre-Endgame movies together, Black Panther, Antman, and Guardians likely would have been bombs.

@@darth_smooth81 I don't agree. Look at the Hawkeye TV show. I am not a comics fan and had never heard of Echo, the Tracksuit Mafia or Kate Bishop and Hawkeye himself is not exactly an A-list hero and yet I loved that show because it had interesting characters and a compelling story. You are basically arguing that a superhero story needs top tier characters to attract a general audience. No it doesn't. It needs relatable characters, like any other genre.
@darth_smooth81
@darth_smooth81 2 ай бұрын
@@jamesfrost126: I think you missed my entire point. I even said these shows/movies are collectively pretty good overall. BUT if you look at strictly numbers, the ones that have heroes from the Infinity Saga era have done exceptionally well in terms of viewership and reception (Wandavision, Falcon & Winter Soldier, Loki)…..but those newer ones aren’t exactly breaking viewership records (She-Hulk, Echo, Ms Marvel). But I am saying the casual moviegoer will find something that appeals to them and will pass on something that doesn’t. They aren’t really willing to take a leap and try something different. Which is why Hawkeye and Black Widow didn’t have their own movies (well, Black Widow did, but it was a prequel and wasn’t received very well at all). Guardians, Black Panther, & Captain Marvel were all successful based upon the premise that they are a part of the Infinity Saga. If they didn’t have anything to do with that then those movies would have failed. Fantastic Four will be an absolute blockbuster in terms of box office money. Same with the first true MCU Xmen movie - regardless of if they’re any good or not. Again, I’m not saying any of the shows/movies are actually bad (I mean, at least not really any worse than Iron Man 3 & Thor 2)…..they just don’t have widespread appeal - coupled with no direction, people are passing on stuff that doesn’t appeal.

I have a soft spot for Lynch's Dune, as it was one of the first movies I saw without my folks at the cinema as a kid when it came out. What spoils it, apart from the rushed storytelling, is the ridiculous exposition-dump 'thought-narration'. Ludicrous. But that Third-Stage Guild Navigator in the tank at the start (a tacked on scene not in the book) almost makes up for it. Nightmare fuel, in a good way 😅

@darth_smooth81
@darth_smooth81 2 ай бұрын
Yes, but why? It’s NOT Marvel “fatigue.” It’s because ever since Endgame all of the major characters we know from the inception of the MCU are gone and there is nothing tying this new “phase” of movies and shows together. Until Endgame, every movie has some tie to Infinity Stones or Thanos - that was the glue holding the movies together. Where is the post-Endgame MCU going? What reason should I go see all of the movies/shows that don’t interest me? People went to see Guardians & Ant-Man because they tied into the overarching story. Not because casual movie goers knew anything about those characters. While I’m glad they’re giving a lot of lesser-known heroes their time to shine, just like comics, people are going to pick and choose what they read/watch until some IP they don’t care about is included in a greater story arc. That’s perfectly fine, in the grand scheme of things. Not everyone is going to spend their money on Shang-Chi or Eternals or Marvels because they aren’t A-listers to the casual fans. But the MCU really needs to bring the universe back together again and give our heroes a reason for joining up and becoming the Avengers again. If not, the MCU will just have a few “blockbusters” here and there with their bigger IP’s mixed with “bombs” of their lesser-known IP’s….

Of the 3 main characters, Iman Vellani was paid the least, $550,000. Divide that by right in the neighborhood of 100 days of filming...$5,500 a day. Let's say she worked a 12 hour day (And we know she didn't) $458 + per hour...Oh no. How will she ever survive....

The 2011 Winnie The Pooh is the best Pooh Bear-related thing since The Many Adventurers back in the 70s. Crying shame that it didn't get more respect at the box office. Of course, on the other hand, who needs a box office when you play the long game as well as Disney? Back in the 80's, when I was Disney-aged, they brought two or three films from their back catalogue back to theaters every year- that's how I first saw 101 Dalmatians and The Aristocats. Disney+ is just the latest evolution of a strategy that went from that through The Disney Channel, VHS, DVD, and so on.

Honestly, I think it's mostly audience confusion. People still expect Disney to release family-friendly fantasy and fairy tale adaptations, but they have produced some good sci-fi. Lilo and Stitch is one of the best films of the post-Eisner era, Treasure Planet and Big Hero 6 both deserve more respect than they get, and Wreck-It-Ralph is one of a kind. Even Atlantis had some merit, albeit it was less than sum of its parts.

So for me I saw most if not all movies first, then heard about the books later if at all. So for Dune 1981 is awesome and pretty much anything else from that era. If you never heard about the books from any sources and only saw the movies, I'm sure you might have a better take them. If I wasn't a kid that grew up knowing everything about Venom from the comics I probably could appreciate Spider-Man 3. Unfortunately I have the books.

The Borderlands movie is a prime example of a movie that belongs on this list even though its not out yet. It has all the signs. The movie was announced YEARS ago, yet the only time its ever been mentioned or brought up remotely was about twice? Or at least those were the only moments of memorable significance. One of them was during Gearboxs own presentation for the Borderlands games, They had Pitchford walking around the studio set showing a bunch of nothing and eluding to a bunch of stuff, but never really showed anything substantial. Somehow, even though Gearbox keeps hosting their very own presentation events, and supposedly has their own movie studio now, they havent brought up or mentioned the movie remotely since then. The only other promotion for the movie was some silhouette shots of the main characters. They also announced the release date of the move drop over a year in advance, but we never got a single visual teaser or trailer only until a couple months ago. Now the movie is about 4 months away and we still only have that one trailer to go off of.

It should be revealing how much money studios spend on marketing versus the actual artwork. They have to "sell" their product with every tactic they can in order to make a decent profit. But honestly, if they spent more time and money on actually good products they wouldn't have to lie and gaslight their audiences on why they flop.

I couldn't believe how bad The Flash was. I thought the reports and reviews were exaggerated. But then I saw it for myself and so wanted my time back. I liked Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. Couldn't stand Ezra Miller as Flash. And then they went and put a second one in. 🤮

SPEED RACER was always a gamble in my view... I do like Anime and Manga, but Speed racer was never on my radar... I have seen the movie and for what its worth its enjoyable... But its no Yu-Gi-Oh! or Dragonball Z... It doesn't have the girt and punch of Vampire Hunter D... And other than die hard fans of the property, I dont think many of us - Including me a the time - Had ever heard of it! It reminds me of when someone did ASTROBOY, I had heard of Astroboy, but only because I adore watching Vintage KZfaq Channels that cover really old TV Shows and stuff... Speed Racer fell in to that category of a "Long Forgotten" And THE MARVELS, I have still not seen it... Not Marvel Fatigue though - My Son went to see it and was simply not impressed... And he is a Die Hard Disney/Marvel Defender... If he did not like it - There was something very wrong! I feel it did not help that not only was there Captain Marvel but Ms. Marvel... Who much as they try to spin it otherwise are NOT the most popular characters in the Marvelverse... Have not had any proper "Build up" ... Much as I enjoyed Captain Marvel as a Movie, It was badly written! I never cared about Carol Danvers as she more or less had everything handed to her on a silver platter! And Ms. Marvel being a Disney + Exclusive... The Causal Audience has no idea who she is... Bad Decisions... Simple as! The Infinity War was always going to be the BIG EPIC... Disney / Marvel Peaked far too soon! (Sorry but KANG THE CONQUERER is NEVER going to be as Epic as THANOS!!! Legal Issues not withstanding...)

John Carter was doomed partially from the failure of Mars Needs Moms. The original title was John Carter of Mars, which is way more intriguing a title than the vanilla sounding title we got, but it was deemed that anything mentioning Mars was box office poison. Enders Game was also doomed because of the gay community’s admonishing Orson Scott Card’s comments on gay marriage. You can argue that the last few DCEU movies were doomed by both the disorganization of the shared universe, the many lackluster films preceding them and the James Gunn announcement.

Haunted Mansion was doomed from the start. They decided to release it in July. Come on ppl.. BAD IDEA! Halloween is October. What about John Carter? It could have had a chance had they marketed it better as well. The Flash was doomed because the tv show was great and so was Grant Gustin who played the Flash. The animated Flashpoint Paradox movie was great as well. Nobody liked Ezra Miller and wanted him recast as they did to Johnny Depp and wanted Grant Gustin to play him.( Tv show ended by then) Even with Ezra in it the director was too scared to have Grant as a variant in it but had other tv actors from numerous shows in it. The Marvels was doomed because nobody wanted it. Nobody watched all the shows on Disney+ . Very few ppl liked Captain Marvel from the beginning. They probably only watched the 1st one as "homework" because they thought it was part of the Avengers. She had no personality in the movie and outside the movies had a bad attitude.

Yeah, if you want to complain about minor characters being paid enough, the issue is the bloated paychecks of the "stars", not the studios' *audacity* to want a substantial financial return on their massive investment. If a movie bombs, the studio eats the loss, not the actors. So when it's successful, they should also reap the rewards. The problem, then, I paying actors $20 million regardless of how the movie performs

@@mullerpotgieter sure, but as I said, the stars get their payday regardless of how the movie performs, and often take a huge chunk out of a film's budget. Disney+ is why The Marvels failed, and streaming in general is hurting all movies. The push to stream content faster is hurting their box office pull. Years ago it would take more than a year for a movie that left the cinema to make it to VHS/DVD or TV; now it only takes months.

The biggest problem with original films is that studios are always afraid that it won't be successful, but they forget that Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and even Avatar, were all original films, based on other things, of course (Star Wars based loosely on Dune, Jurassic Park on a book of the same title, and Avatar being a science fiction retelling of the history of North and South America), but still original, not being a sequel to or remake of something else, and all three were the highest grossing movies of all time at one point.

Calling Speed Racer one of their “best”? Can’t tell if that speaks to the decline of the Wachowskis’ bankability… or if he’s being sarcastic. I’m both a diehard anime fan and a fan of Speed Racer in particular & my sons were into anime and cars the year this came out. I immediately recognized it was a candy-colored dumpster fire, but I would’ve roughed it out if my kids liked it. They did not. Halfway through, both said it was dumb and they wanted to *leave*! Neither was over 10… which is why I assumed they’d be distracted by the spectacle. But even they weren’t fooled.

There are many reasons the Marvels fails, Superhero/Marvel fatigue isnt one. The movie have no direction. From the start you knew the Marvel movies were gearing up for something special with the Avengers ever since Iron Man started not only because they alluded to it, but also because it was alluded to in Incredible Hulk 2008, even though that movie is treated like its sorta, but not sorta, in the MCU, yet Iron Man kickstarted it but whatever. Point is, the movies always had a direction. We always knew it would build up to Thanos, and that they just needed to flesh out the characters beforehand. Now its aimless. We know a bunch of movies are coming, but to what point? The Eternals alluded to some big battle, but its seemingly only them doing it even though the world was at jeopardy, and somehow Galactus is being alluded to coming into play? Theres also the whole thing with Kang...theres so many directions and nobody knows whats going on. Brie Larson has become enemy number one. Not as bad by any means as Ezra Miller, but Brie has made a reputation for herself as someone whose trouble to work with and someone who the fandoms arent particularly fond of either. She got exposed for talking behind the backs of her Marvel co stars and it showed in interviews their relationships were a bit strained with her. It seems shes made it a point to make herself seem as annoying as possible, and unfortunately shes playing one of the biggest, and most powerful characters in Marvel and theres no switching her out, so people have just been taking to disliking the stuff shes in. The movies are just bad. Again, has nothing to do with fatigue, unless you mean fatigue of being forced to watch bad movies, then yes. Because if you want to keep up to date with the MCU, you eventually have to watch the movies or be lost, or you could result to just reading the wikias, but....eh. Good luck doing that, and having everything stick. Before the movies, even if some of them didnt have the best story writing, they were still enjoyable action packed popcorn flicks with decent homages. It even seemed like each heroes trilogy had their own unique themes to them. Now, they just all seem generically slotted and samey, with the movies not exactly sticking to their characters persona, but rather trying to ape the exact same formula they are all sharing.

No X-Men: Dark Phoenix? It was a follow up to what was then the worst entry in the franchise. It was released after Disney purchased Fox which basically let everyone know that this series was going to be rebooted & therefore kinda pointless. Its biggest star, Jennifer Lawerence basically phoned it in, refusing to wear the blue makeup for most of her scenes. It was made by a first-time director. It got terrible reviews. And it was released at the MCU's peak, when Marvel was sucking all the oxygen out of the room when it came to the discourse & attention around superhero movies.
