You got a N64, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, BK, and OoT all at once?? Idk if younger generations can appreciate what a colossal haul that would’ve been!! It’s so easy to take for granted now but before that generation, fully explorable 3D worlds had been literally the stuff of gamer dreams for decades. People who weren’t there can still appreciate those games, but they won’t know what it was like when that was the very cutting edge. Because they’re simple games in retrospect, but we filled in the gaps. As barren as we can now see they are we *lived* in those worlds.

It was likely the most impactful Christmas Day that I had ever had. From that point on, there really wasn't anything as captivating to me. I was really poor growing up, so Dad saved up most of his money and worked with my grandparents to make sure I could get them. The way it went down (because I couldn't say it with my kids sitting near me), is that my dad bought Ocarina of Time, and the N64. My grandparents bought Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario 64. "Santa" got me BK. The thing that was crazy is that BK fell under the couch after my parents had set-up for the night, and being parents, they totally forgot that they had bought BK for me. One of my stocking stuffers was this ball that lit up when you bounced it, and I bounced it, missed it, and it rolled under the couch where BK had slipped under. It was like a second Christmas miracle.

One of my all-time favorite N64 moments is the Rainbow Road track in Mario Kart 64. First time I played it, my jaw dropped at that gorgeous music and the big faces of Mario characters all lit up in colorful neon lights against the sky. Obviously later games in the series are better (and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an absolute masterpiece), but I still go back to Mario Kart 64 from time to time and I still get wowed by that amazing Rainbow Road.

Hot take: I've tried again and again to get into the N64, I own a physical condole and some carts. I use an emulator to try games I don't own, and I still just cannot get into it as much as the NES, Genesis, or SNES. I love the Game Cube so much more than the N64, I just feel like the N64 is fueled by a lot of nostalgia for people who grew up in that era that I missed out on being an eighties kid. I guess this is just a confession, and nothing more. Thanks for listening. Haha
@Fortefyre5 ай бұрын
It's not a hot take, it's a great rational take. 90s gaming in particular, was a massive jagged landscape of "what can we do differently" and was a battleground for Sega, Nintendo, and Sony to do what they could to keep the market alive. The N64, for the most part, like I said, only featured a handful of games that were "decent" and if they were, it was because Rare or Nintendo make them. The PS1 won that battle in my opinion. Thank you for sharing your opinion, and I welcome you to share your opinion again in future episodes!

The N64 was the last (only?) console both my brothers and I played concurrently. Afterwards my older brother got too busy for video games and my younger brother gained new interests. Things were never the same.

If there's any N64 shooter that still manages to stand, it'd be Perfect Dark. Bomberman 64 and Bomberman 64: The Second Attack proved Bomberman can work in the 3D adventure style (a shame that 3DS adventure game was cancelled). Bomberman Hero isn't as good, but it's still decent. I consider Doom 64 to be the best Doom out there. There's even an official remaster made years later. While Star Wars Episode 1: Racer began on arcades, it's the N64 version I loved playing. Ironically, podracing in the episode 1 movie is hated on by many. The other two Star Wars part of the exclusivity deal are the very well known Rogue Squadron and the more obscure Battle for Naboo. While Rogue Squadron 2 is basically the original but better and none of the three RS games ever had a fancy shield system unlike X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, they still managed to do a good job translating the Star Wars vehicles into early 3D. Besides; like RS2, the original has more good and interesting missions than actual duds. As for Battle for Naboo, it's obvious they were really limited with what vehicles they could add. The fact there's land based missions is a reminder of that not going well in Rogue Squadron 3. However, it's not quite as bad here. Besides, when you do get to fly around, it feels quite similar to Rogue Squadron. It has its own upgrade system for the vehicles. Also like Rogue Squadron, the Episode 1 music translated rather well onto the N64. Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA is a more realistic racer I quite like on the system. It's an improvement over San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing. While there's San Francisco Rush 2049; you can tell the developers had a rough time trying to make it work on the N64. You're better off with Dreamcast or Midway Arcade Treasures 3 on GCN for that one. Snowboard Kids 1 and 2 are unique styled racers that can be considered gems. A shame the series died with the really bad Snowboard Kids DS.

GoldenEye, Super Mario 64, and Donkey Kong 64 should've been on this list. And may your dad rest in peace, mate. :)
@Fortefyre6 ай бұрын
I have my own reasons for why these three aren't. I've never played Goldeneye 007, at least not the campaign mode on my stream. Mario 64 the camera kills it for me, and Donkey Kong 64 was a ROUGH collectathon. That being said, I do enjoy them, but I have VERY strict rating requirements! Thanks for the kind words about my dad, without him I likely would have never known as much as do, nor had the exposure that I did to the video gaming industry. I can say that thankfully, Dad was able to see 2 out of my 3 biological children after their birth, and I like to think he's watching my videos from wherever he is, with a Coke and Krystal's sliders.

Great list, dude! I still have to pick up Majora's Mask, but I recently completed Ocarina Of Time for the first time just a couple of months ago. My brother and I originally got it on release from a Nintendo Power subscription bundle in 1998, but I never really got into it. My brother never beat it either, giving up at either Spirit Temple or Ganon's Tower, and abandoning the N64 for the Dreamcast and PS1. I played a file years later in like 2005-06, and got stuck in Jabu Jabu's Belly before quitting, then selling my N64 in 2009. I picked up a new one last year on eBay, and started a file on Ocarina Of Time last spring. File got erased when I went to complete it in the fall, so I started a new file in October, and beat it in December! Sorry to hear about your father's passing, too :( I lost my dad in 2016, and he was also the one who got me into video games as a kid. We'd borrow the NES from his work buddy, until we got one in 1989. We also rented one from the video store in 1987 with the original Legend Of Zelda, and I remember playing it on my great-grandparents' TV at their camp during Thanksgiving in 1987. Good times :D

Huh. Super Mario 64 not being on the list was an total shock since it helped shape the system and was responsible of introducing into 3D gaming. Weird. I would've also mentioned Paper Mario 64 since it's the only turn based RPG on the system and it still holds up remarkably well. At least I agree on Majora's Mask & Mystical Ninja Goemon being on the list.

I like Mario Party 2 and 3 much more (7 and DS are my favorites; though 6 is a big fan favorite). Mario Party 1 has those two strange mini-games that involve all the characters working together. Characters couldn't use items regularly like in the sequels. Also, it feels unusually punishing for this series. To be fair to Super Mario Kart, they had to start somewhere. Still, they made the right decision in the sequels to make the AI use the same items as the player, item boxes essentially now have unlimited uses, the retry system was given unlimited continues in MK64 and then ditched in other Mario Karts, reworked the drift system all the way up till Mario Kart 7 and 8, kart selection since Double Dash and customization since Mario Kart 7, and the special cup is available for 50cc since MK64. I like the game more than Super Circuit and especially Tour.

@bananonymouslastname56935 ай бұрын
Ocarina of Time was the game that killed Zelda for me. The 2 NES games and A Link to the Past were some of my favorite games ever, and until Ocarina, I'dve called it my favorite series. I was pumped for it. I read every article. I pre-ordered it at a local KayBee Toys. I wore the pre-order bonus T-shirt. I was as excited as I'd ever been for a game. I picked it up on launch day. I had a bunch of friends over. I was ready to go. I opened it up, put it in, and played for a little over an hour, and I wasn't having fun. I passed it to my brother to start a file, and he adored it. I kept trying to play it over the following weeks, and grew to hate it. They clearly became really enamored with creating a big open world, but it wasn't fun to explore. It wasn't dense with secrets everywhere like the first 3 games. I loathed just riding Epona from end to end of Hyrule Field. I was bored. I still try to go back to it every few years. I never sold it, and even grabbed a few of the later games in the series and remakes. I just don't like it. It's a boring game to le where fun and pacing were sacrificed at attempts at realism. Block pushing puzzles that once took less than 2 seconds now took minutes, not because they were a challenge, but because you had to play put every frame of animation. Now that I'm done crapping on a game eveyone loves, I think it's awesome that you keep ghost data from your dad. That's a nice reminder of him tied into your hobby!
