NASCAR returns to North Wilkesboro this week after leaving for 27 years. So, it can’t be held against fans that they may not know too much about the old gal. So today we are going to look back at the history of the track and some facts that every NASCAR fan should know heading into this weekend’s events. These are 10 North Wilkesboro facts you need to know.

Wether the racing product is good or bad, at the end of the day, Wilkesboro coming back is huge for the sport.

I was a small kid when the track closed down in 1996, I’m pretty excited about watching the race on 📺 for the very first time.

I'd love to see NASCAR bring back these tracks every year for the All-Star race. Have a rotating schedule of grassroots tracks that really pay homage to the hometown beginnings of a lot of drivers. Bonus points if these tracks are already being used for things like Sprint cars or Modifieds and they arrange to do a swap with those series.

Hopefully this becomes a points race starting next year and Nashville fairgrounds is the all star race next year. And then Nashville fairgrounds gets a points race ideally.

It would be cool if they moved it to a grassroots track for sure. As long as someone (NASCAR) is willing to clean them up, repave or whatever to host it. It should be moved every year period. It was the on,y sport that did not move it for years. I think the finale should move also.

I'm hoping that the pavement at the track will hold up, because the track started to come apart after Practice and Qualifying in the ASA and CARS Tour

I was lucky enough to see two races at North Wilkesboro when I was 8 and 10 back in 1987 and 1989. It was always a awesome race!! To add to your fact about how the track is laid out, passing was done on the backstretch 👍🏻

One of my fave part of this track is the uphill on one straight and down hill on the other, I REALLY hope they keep that in the repave or even make it more pronounced!

I'm currently rewatching every race from 90-07. Right now I just started 1994 the year where that race took place. So far all the NW races have not disappointed. Rewatching history

You Could easily bring Back Milwaukee Mile and then add the Nashville Fairgrounds back too. The Rockingham track has plans for demolition soon.

Well at least the Truck race will be on Fox. Not sure why fans are still asking for the Cup race on Fox even though every All Star race has been on cable since Fox first started doing All Star races

My dad and I worked at NWS on that ill fated attempt back in ‘10-‘11. Saw a young Chase Elliott and John Hunter win in their respective classes, wish I could remember which. Got to meet JH’s grandmother on top of victory lane. Also a good buddy of mine is a former sign painter, back when that was a thing. His work is still on the big cinder block wall. “Three words and a bird”!

another fact Brett Bodine got his only Cup win here and it was possibly due to a scoring error but thankfully that was debunked by nascarman and Brock Beard in a video the two made, so yes Brett won the 1990 First Union 400 legitimately.

Neither of two tracks that took North Wilkesboro's original 2 race dates holds it now: The spring date was given to Texas Motor Speedway, which in 2021 lost it to COTA. The fall one was given to New Hampshire, in 2018 it was taken by Las Vegas instead. And, for another fun fact, it's current date, the All-Star Race, was taken from TMS, moved to Bristol during COVID, had been run in Charlotte since 1985, but also was run in Atlanta once in 1986. That single Atlanta race is the one that established the All-Star Race's date in the schedule (first one was a double-header held on the same weekend as the 600) - a date that originaly belonged to Nashville Fairgrounds.

Also here's another fun fact in the movie Cars 3 for people that might have not known this. Thomasville Speedway is based on North Wilkesboro the only things that ever change was it was dirt not asphalt

Most tracks in cars are based on real tracks. Monaco is represented in cars 2 and Bristol and autoclub are in the first one. Pretty cool that they did that

Last time there was a NASCAR Cup event there was when I was 7 in 1996. I still remember the racing there in 1990's as I watched NASCAR with my dad rooting for Rusty Wallice.

I really wish they would bring the Daytona road course back for the summer race. 6 plate races a year is way too many. Lucky wins and torn up race cars. I never liked road America. I found it really narrow and virtually impossible to pass. Not sure the street course in Chicago is going to be much better unfortunately. Great video, I’m looking forward to seeing the stands jam packed and the upper towers or closed in areas all lit up. Should be fun!

On the point of the drivers who passed who either ran or attempted to run at North Wilkesboro in 96, two died of cancer (Bobby Hamilton passed away from head and neck cancer, John Andretti passed away from colon cancer), one was killed in a racing accident (Dale Earnhardt at Daytona in 01) and one sadly died at his own hand (Dick Trickle in 2013)

The only other driver who is entered amongst the Truckers and Cup Guys that was active in NASCAR when Wilkesboro was part of the schedule is Norm Benning, although Norm never attempted a race at NWS until this week

I live here and was 15 and attended qualifying at the last race here. I hope above all else that this is a rejuvenation of the area and not its swan song. The abandonment of the speedway has been a direct similie of the abandonment of Wilkes and small towns across this country.

I was just looking at Auto Club, and it has been changed to Next Gen California, and the website leads to a Nascar website video, so unfortunately the Auto Club we knew, and for me grew to love with the next gen car is definitely gone as we knew it.

Well, if Earnhardt gets that spin back and wins over Rusty, then he has to give back the penalty that stole the championship from Mark Martin in 1990. Not saying the penalty was because of Earnhardt, just saying sometimes the breaks go your way and sometimes they don't.

As someone who has been going to races at newhampshire since I was 11 years old, In the last 3 years the crowd size has grown gradually so to say that the attendance is down isn’t factual

Imagine if Earnhardt was an 8 time champ, who would the greatest driver of all time be (assuming all other drivers stats remain same). Do you value pure number of wins, The King, number of championships, Dale in this alternate reality, or the dominance of Jimmies five in a row. I’d still go with Jimmie but it sure is a closer race

There was, but Brock Beard and nascarman put out a video debunking the claims of the scoring error. Brett Bodine won the race fair and square.

The fact that the pavement is still good enough to race on shows. How hard and how much wear and tear cars are on a track or on public roads. Kind of a good example. Why we should have more walkability 😂😢

Taking away Road America in favor of a street circuit in the most crime riddled rat pit we call "metropolitan areas" is just ridiculous. If I was the race organizer of the Atlanta race the week after, I would required all vehicles, drivers, crew, and equipment to go through full decontamination so as not to risk bringing any diseases from the urban hell scapes and spreading them to the still civilized parts of the country.
