When I was working at the airport in Las Vegas, one of my co-worker and I saw these college students from BYU (all guys) getting in line for security and we noticed they were carrying pink bags. We asked them what’s up with that and they told us that they were Psychology majors and the people who steals bag will most likely not want to steal because the color pink is too noticeable versus a black bag. Ever since, I always buy an off-color bags like my roller back pack is turquoise color.

Adding the Apple Air Tag has already found my bag during a travel nightmare of cancelled flights out of Newark. My bag didn’t make the flight out that I was able to and the airline tried to tell me it had but they lost it. I was able to show them on my iPhone it was still in Newark. From that they had the ground crew there check and they found it. They then sent it on the next flight. They next day I knew it was at my home airport before they even contacted me.

I always double check the airline’s tag to ensure the destination is correct. We’ve had situations where on a multi-leg flight the final destination was not on the tag.

Having handled luggage for a major airline, I would recommend against the type of luggage tag you suggested. Those belt buckle style closures failed more than any other type. Two is a good idea. I use the rubberized ones that can hold a printed card that come with a strong rubberized loop that is looped through the tag and luggage handle. Further, on the tags on the outside, I would only put your cell phone number and name. Addresses on the outside help nobody and may inform baggage handlers of the address of someone likely not to be at home currently. This has been used in the pass for home thefts. I can't remember how many late bags showed up where I worked that only had the home phone number, big help when you're on vacation! I also use a colorful luggage strap to help ID my bags.

I was worried about my tag coming off, so I used super glue to secure the buckle. Hard as a rock now, but not going anywhere. Glue is helpful if you already bought one that is flimsy.

When I get a new bag I use a stencil and paint to apply a big flower (or pattern) to each side of my bag. A black bag with a bright flower stencil on it really stands out from all the other black bags on the baggage claim belt. Once a bag got lost and I think the airport staff found it quickly because I was able to tell them it also had two big pink flowers on each side.

My recent experiences have led me to believe that you should always prepare to have your luggage delayed. Airlines try very diligently to get your luggage to your final destination but if there are weather issues or plane delays they really don't make much of an effort unless you push them to get your luggage to you in a timely fashion. You must make a claim with the airline immediately upon notice that your bag will not be on your flight to your destination or there is a delay. Put a claim in immediately and keep track of it until you receive your bag. Also, you can put in a request for a refund of the bag fee.

I'm so glad you posted a video on checked luggage. There are far too many people posting about carry-on luggage when there are those of us that NEED to use checked. I, for example, fly to Europe annually for a month. The European carriers are very restrictive for carry-ons (size, weight or both) and because of my extended stay a small carry-on only won't do.

Such great ideas! Some I have been doing for a long time and others that seem so simple that I wonder why I never even thought of doing them myself, such as taking a pic of your belongings and taking a pic of the outside of your suitcase. Duh! After watching the video I ordered a suitcase sleeve from Amazon, not expensive at all. It seems like a great way to spot your bag as it's coming down the belt! Thanks again.

I've seen a trick where people put colored/themed duct tape on their luggage to help distinguish it from other bags, although I would not necessarily want to do that with the high-end luggage you use. Picking any color other than black definitely helps too. I stopped locking my luggage years ago because of increased frequency of random search, but I will still put a small zip tie on to help keep the zipper shut. The trick there is to put the zip tie on backwards (inside out) so it doesn't lock in place but instead slides easily back and forth, which also makes it reusable. Another great video, Megan. Keep up the good work!

Great ideas. Also in the vein of don't buy cheap luggage, I decided to reconsider cheap tickets involving four different airports, multiple layovers and two or three diferent carriers and just go with one carrier with one layover in its home country. I bought my ticket directly with the carrier and not some fly-by-night consolidater. TBH, there are no guarantees with air service these days.
@koenven7012
@koenven7012 Жыл бұрын
try to get a direct flight if there is one. It's easier for you (no layovers, no spending hours in an airport) and easier for your bags. That being said, the only time my bag failed to arrive was on a direct flight because the baggage handling system at the airport had broken down and they had let the plane go without any bags at all (that was fun, as everybody had to file a claim at the same time). Luckily it was on the way home so I didn't need anything in the bag immediately (and as an added plus, they brought the bag to my house so I didn't have to do that myself).

I've been using a few of those tricks, but it seems the best defense is to have a long layover. I went on a cruise out of Copenhagen earlier this month, and I understand 300 people arrived without bags due to issues in European airports. I had a five hour layover in Frankfurt, and my bag arrived with me, so I was set. On the way bag, I had an hour, 40 minutes in London Heathrow. I arrived back in Las Vegas; my bag didn't. It was delivered about 30 hours later. Fortunately, there was nothing I needed in it. My Airtags showed it as being in London, but I still had to wait until they stopped dropping bags at claim before I could take it up with the person on duty (another woman from the same cruise and route home also did not receive her bags). One thing I did was put a list of where the bag wanted to be for each date, and I used an online translator to put it in several languages (English, Danish, German, and French). Copies went in the plastic pouch with my ID tag (on the other side of that contact information), and inside my bag. They gave me a form instead of my bags, but when I got home and went online to fill it out, my bag was already listed as missing (the workers at Heathrow no doubt already had the bag and knew the plane was long gone). Surprisingly, it didn't allow me to upload a photo of my bag (which is VERY distinctive given the stickers on it), just a description. You can't really avoid lost bags; you can just take steps to maximize the chance of getting them quickly.

A great video and a detailed one.. thank you for sharing this.... . I'm sure these great tips would be of help to everyone. Unfortunately even after paying a high cost to airlines and airport taxes these guys are highly irresponsible... And we end up thinking and spending our hard earned money in further unnecessary stuff to ensure it's safe and secure.

My 2 year old only drinks liquid pediasure in a bottle. So whenever we go on trips I bring a case or two. Is it better to check in or carryon? I mean, if I check in a luggage, I always lose an item or 2. And in carryon luggage it’s always a hassle getting searched. But so far I have only been checking in his liquid pediasure and only bring a small milk bag with 6 ready feed liquid pediasure in it.

That recommended checked bag weighs in at around 12lb or 5.5kg. That’s a lot out of your over all checked baggage allowance (15kg/20kg/22kg).

I actually bought customized luggage covers, with my name and likeness on it. Can putting a photocopy of my DL inside work as well?

Beacons may yet be a wonderful idea: If placed inside a baggage---would facilitate immediate discovery anywhere in the world should a misplacement occurs on transit ---though may not allowed by airlines---as becons are often times first tool of trade by operatives of nefarious activities.

1, don't bring jewelry. 2, if you must in carry on if it's at all valuable, or just bring the cheap stuff.

Never in checked-in luggage. If you must bring jewelry, keep it with you in your carry on or hand bag that you can keep an eye on
