"slid in here on a shrimp sandwich" = two possible english sayings: 1. Born with a silver spoon in their mouth 2.Living a charmed life.

My favorite is "Lite bakom flötet" which translates to "Slightly behind the fishing float" but is used to say that some one is not that smart, in a nicer way.

It's funny how different, and instantly recognizable, the Swedish-accented English is compared to the Norwegian-accented English. And same with Danish. Brits and Americans would probably be surprised to know that we can tell each other apart so easily by the way we speak English!

'throw yourself into the wall' = 'take a hike'

These idioms made far more sense because you added *context* to the translations. I feel like I've learned something interesting today. Thankyou!

'to not have pure flour in the bag' = 'a bad egg'

Having traveled in Europe during my military career, I agree that some expressions and exclamations lose a lot in translation. These are very informative and interesting. I, for one, love to live the differences in cultures vicariously, as I don't travel anymore. Thank for sharing, Linn!

So when the group looks at you confused and bewildered or obviously think you're off your rocker is "It's a Swedish translation thing..." your go too diversion tactic? This was a funny vlog.

There's another lady from Sweden on KZfaq, Emilie's Outdoor Adventures, who also throws in an occasional Swedish saying during her videos. They are also quite amusing. I imagine American sayings would sound just as weird when translated for Swedish folks. :)

When talking or listening to anything that involves Sweden or Norway or Finland the whole thing sound like a really pretty fairytale .. maybe because the closest thing to it i grew up and enjoyed so much was the Moomins so it kinda connects to that .

Have you heard of this one: "he was off his rocker"? Meaning he was crazy or "bonkers".

I have to wonder if there is more then one way to say these weird sayings.. My favorite of these was the slide in on shrimp sandwich.. I never would accuse anyone of having a easy life... but I all too often under estimate how easy things will be.. So I guess my question is, would I be guilty of of thinking this would be as easy as sliding in on shrimp sandwich?

I suppose no matter what country you are in, there are sayings that may sound strange to others. I’m from Australia and we have one or many that other countries would find weird I’m sure. “Their a few tiles short of a roof”.

I just love how languages do not sometimes translate lol. I live in South Africa and my mother tongue is Afrikaans (derived from Dutch but somehow sounds closer to Flemish) and it is a very expressive language as we seem to have an unique sense of humour. I just love the "not pure flour" and the "shrimp sandwich" one, somehow I know Afrikaans people would find it really funny. We have some expressions that just cannot be translated or described to carry across the true meaning as some of yours have been too, only Afrikaans people get it :-D
