10 reasons Batman: No Man's Land is... JUST THE BEST!

In 1999 DC Comics took all of the Batman books in a risky direction that few thought would work: They shut down Gotham City for a whole year. Characters like Robin, Nightwing, Huntress, Batgirl and the Dark Knight himself were forced to deal with the ramifications of an earthquake in Cataclysm. And in a world of drawn out events, this somehow managed to be JUST THE BEST!
For the Season Of Events, I wanted to revisit why its so great, and look at the phenomenal work Greg Rucka, Chuck Dixon, Paul Dini and everyone else did to make this one of the best Batman stories ever!

I love this event! I bought vol 2 directly from Chuck Dixon before it came out at the same price most sites were selling it. Also he signed it and gave me a sketch with it!

Im halfway through Road to No Mans Land, never read this series before. Just read a little side story about a family man which starts and ends with the phrase "catch me daddy". I'm like WTF! Really enjoying this so far.

Why oh why haven't I still not picked up No mans Land. I'm a fool ha ha😅. Though slowly working my way through collecting Post Crisis Batman from the beginning. Love this segment on the channel. Re reading Ultimate Spider-Man vol 1, 8 issues in and 100% agree with you. Still the best all these years later. Getting me out of a bad reading slump🙂

Funny enough, this is coming up in my DC reading. Interesting thoughts here and looking forward to my experience. I’ll be going back to Knightfall after I collect the omnibus trilogy.

There are other great runs on Batman, but No Man's Land is my favorite too, I love the real life human element of natural disaster as a character in and of itself, because I have been through natural disasters and it really changes the mentality of everyone when nothing functions anymore and all your possessions are gone. It felt like every character had a lot to do and so much to react to, and even some villians were almost heroic in their response. Barbara Gordon and Huntress were very strong during this era too. If there are some minuses, DC was really trying to make the character Azreal happen, and he is lame, and there were too many artist switchups during this time.

Looking to get into Batman would you recommend the Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale Omnibus or Batman No Man’s Land (on a budget right now 😅)

I've only read the stories contained in the Loeb and Sale omni and think that's a good one to own. I think Dark Victory is better than Long Halloween imo. Plus if you are on a tight budget it is only 1 omni whereas NML will have 3(1 for the preludes and 2 for the main event.) Plus heard it is beneficial if you read Contagion and legacy as well but not vital. They have yet to be collected in a omni format. 🙂 Hope this helps!!😁

I'd go with the jeph loeb tim sale omni....it's just such a great classic era of batman I love. Although no mans land is close I find the art by tim sale a bigger selling point then the art in no mans land...but art is very subjective.

I would go: Year One; Dark Knight Returns; Loeb/Sale Omni; Snyder/Capullo (omni v1). NML is really enjoyable but it's not a top five read IMO.

I like No Man's Land for the most part... but it should've capped off as Two-Face trying Gordon. The stuff with the Joker killing Sarah Essen was pants-shittingly stupid... and the saddest part ? The Joker was fun during most of the story (or the whole 90's Bat-books really) what with the election & trolling Pettit. But offing Gordon's wife like that & going "Yeah, I did it. Blow me, Jim" ? THAT is the reason some fans got turned off by the mainline Joker & stuck to the DCAU version who was at least VERY imaginative in his cruelty.

I read through road to no man's land and the two no man's lands omnis recently and I enjoyed them. Especially no man's land Omni run but the best run? Far from it.

I might be the only one who thinks Arkham Knight is a 10/10 game. I loved the Batmobile, those Riddler races sucked though ha ha. City is my favourite though. Had a blast collecting those 440 Riddler trophies. Arkham Asylum is the worst imo.

Watching a few Chuck Dixon’s interviews recently, the fact he is so unapologetically conservative, I think the very reason Batman is great has been forever lost in the contemporary Batman storylines. It’s not like all characters must be on the right wing, WW is forever a progressive character, thanks to Rucka’s work, but Batman just cannot be a all loving all caring superhero character as he is today.
