I just acquired a 2018 Crosstrek after trading in my 2015 Crosstrek for it, and there's only one point in this video I would disagree with. That point is that I absolutely find thrills in driving my new car. However, they are different thrills from the ones I used to find when I had a Mustang GT or my Mazda Miata. What I find thrilling in the Crosstrek is seeing a dirt road and being able to say, "Hey, let's see what's down that way!" instead of just glancing wistfully as I drive by. I was quite thrilled to be able to drive my 2015 right out onto the beach at the cape on Hatteras Island instead of having to park on the pavement and trudge through the hot sand. I'm also very thrilled every time I can look back on a fun day of driving through the country roads (paved and dirt) of West Virginia and then realize I still have gas left in the tank :D Great video summary of the Crosstrek, thanks for sharing it :)

christopher sigmund Hey, I wanted to buy a Crosstrek at the beginning of the 2019. So how do you feel about driving the Crosstrek on an incline road ? I mean when you drive the car to climb on a montain, do you feel the engine shivering ? Because I really enjoy going roadtrip in the U.S, so I really care about the performance of the engine when it climbs on a high mountain. I’m driving a 2014 Honda Civic, and whenever I drive the car on a high mountain, I cannot reach 60 mph because the engine is weak and I have the feeling if I push the pedal to 60 mph or over, the engine would explode because of the loud noise from the hood. So could you give me some reviews about the 2018 Crosstrek on that criteria ? Thank you

And then realizing 15 mins later that there's nothing down that dirt road, which is why the government hasn't invested in paving it.

@@zacharyreynolds4303 Yeah, fast or quick are relative. A RAV4Prime is about as quick 0-60MPH as a GTO Judge or a Testarossa. It's not even considered "quick" these days. A new Camry can outcorner or outbrake many performance cars from the 90s, yet it's considered "bland" these days.

While I agree with the sentiment, remember that the Crosstrek is based on the Impreza which has been out for nearly a year now. Given that the chassis and technology have had that time to work out any issues, I'd have no problem getting one of the first Crosstreks to hit dealer floors.

Yeah, back in the mid 2000's in the USA, EVERY Subaru model could be had with a turbocharged boxer engine AND manual transmission. I believe 2005 was the last model year for that. Models include the Outback 2.5XT, Forester 2.5XT, Baja Turbo, Legacy 2.5GT, and of course, the Impreza WRX. The biggest difference was, every turbo engine was the EJ255 except for the WRX which had the EJ205.

The acceleration is decent and good enough for me to safely pass anyone on the highway or merge onto a fast paced highway easily. It’s comfortable and quiet. I am not sure what you mean by there’s no excitement with the way it drives, it drives just fine. We are not at Le Mans 😑🤣

Xzstnce EU emissions standards are so strict it's bordering on a joke. See things like Diesel Gate. So many models are moving to CVTs and Start/Stop systems to improve emissions for congestion charges and fleet fuel economy statistics. If it wasn't for the Prius, Toyota would be screwed, as they are the last of the big automakers to adopt wide spread direct injection. So almost all of their standard models are CVT with Start/Stop. It's just the sign of the times thanks to obnoxious environmental regulations.

Wait. Removed manual from Europe but it's still available in America, which is notorious for their "lack of" manual driving skills? - I don't understand, Subaru... Edit: I have to edit this. In Switzerland you can get the 6 gear manual transmission if you get the 2.0i or 2.0d engine. Probably because Subaru is quite successfully selling their cars there? Well I know that Subarus are popular there for sure. So my guess is it's only for selected countries?

Subaru really made huge improvements throughout with the 2018 Crosstrek! I would normally choose the manual and usually wouldn't even think about the CVT when a manual is offered. However, I would choose the CVT in this for no other reason than to get X-Mode, which provides Hill Decent Control and what is essentially low-range for off-roading, going up steep inclines with loose terrain and ice surfaces, getting through really deep snow, etc..

+Engineering Explained - I would like to see a comparison to the VW Golf Alltrack. It has a much more peppy engine that is hard to not like. The Subaru 2.0 N/A is so underwhelming to the point of poking my eyes out. I drove it for 5 minutes and returned it to the dealer and was like not a chance in the world you could sell that to me. Subaru: 152 hp, 145 lb tq - 33 mpg highway VW Golf Alltrack: 170 hp, 199 lb tq - 32 mpg highway Both AWD, both have raised suspensions over their sibling variants. Both have automatics and manual transmission options. For me personally, the new Gen 3 1.8 TSI engine found in the VW is far superior to the new 2.0 N/A engine in the Subaru line-up. And both use their company's new global chassis. Please do a comparison video!

As someone with a 2016 Impreza, I was especially interested in hearing _your_ opinion about this car, because most reviewers just focus on how nice everything looks, the better sound system, and how its all based on the new global platform. They don't say anything else that's really useful when compared to previous years, especially regarding the manual. I feel a little bit resentful that I don't have the 2017 model.

SalveMonesvol Torque, fuel economy, and emissions. The S2000 has no low end torque for easy maneuvering around traffic, gets horrendous fuel economy given its 2.0L (or 2.2) displacement, and is certainly not designated a PZEV. I should know...I own both. The Subaru may not be powerful but given how efficient it is, it doesn't do bad at all. The S2000 gets away with low torque because who cares if you need to wring it out? That's its purpose.

Because it only takes about 60hp to race between stop lights and 20hp to cruise the interstate highways, which is what 99% of drivers do. 200hp is fun but if you gotta scream to 6000rpm to get it, you're not really gonna be doing that except maybe on the merging ramps. In short, everyone overestimates their *need* for horsepower.

Europe probably doesnt buy into the whole AWD as a necessity thing and likely means Subaru's market share is much smaller than in the US. Limiting options and features means they can get a car to market for less to increase profit margins.

I wish that the Duster was available in the US (along with such vehicles as the Lada Niva, yeah I'm weird). Those likely succeed in the EU market due to taxes and production/shipping costs to get it to those shores. Subaru, being a small company, probably cannot afford to build new facilities or shipping routes to get those cars their cost effectively.

I love the way you approached this review. Most reviews of this type car I see are done by people (including you) that drive sports cars or cars verging on super cars etc. Then they expect every car/crossover/suv to have the most sporty transmission, tightest stearing, and able to throw the back of the car out through every corner... You approach this as the car it is, "it can get up to speed easily to get on the highway and overtake, but it's not an exciting drive". And I appreciated how you almost mocked it at the end. No one buys a crosstrek to drag race their friends haha

But I'd need mess with the wiring, probably replace the tranny and find a rebuilt WRX or STI motor and a shop that could do it all. Mess with the exhaust, too. Just want to confuse Mustangs when I blast past with that boxer engine making it's dinky little pop noise.

Problem is, you can't just install the motor. You need a better transmission, better axles, stronger cv joints etc, which may mean stronger mounting points and frame reinforcements... and pretty soon you have yourself a crosstrek that is the same weight and power as one of the larger models they already sell. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Here's my "beef" with Subaru; I love them.. Love my forester 6m (2015). However; Subaru falls "flat" with their engines (pun intended). Good engines; decent power. However; if Subaru can offer a 2.0 non turbo in the cross trek, why not offer a "performance" version with the WRX 2.0 turbo? As well, why offer a 2.5 170 hp in the Forester and then offer the 2.0 as the only engine options? Subaru needs a "midrange" flat 4 that is normally aspirated (for fuel mileage) yet puts out around 200 hp.

@@af4237 Its a huge mistake, as image matters. The image of the Mustang for example is massively boosted by the availability of the Mustang GT, Bullitt, and GT500, even if the majority of sales are the ecoboost. It simply gives the body street cred. Subarus are earning a reputation for being glacial appliances devoid of fun-factor, and that's not a good thing. So even if its a loss leader, offer the XT trim even if it only makes 5% of sales. It will also get reviewers like Car and Driver and others to give it rave reviews and drool all over it, which will get people interested in the chassis that may settle for the low power engine.

No trolling here. I have owned my new 2018 Crosstrek for a week now and absolutely glad I traded the Rav4 for the Subaru. The Crosstrek's safety features is way ahead of Toyota Rav4, gas mileage and travel range is far greater, the AWD system is superior, the handling/cornering is far better. Try a Crosstrek before you buy a Rav4. Sorry Toyota fans, like I said in a post earlier I have and owned Toyota's for over 35 years and will sing their praises but the Rav4 AWD system sucks! Toyota needs to step up how their AWD system works in my professional opinion.

It's noisy (in a bad way), has rattles, the seats are uncomfortable, the highway stability is marginal, it has a transmission from the 80s in it, the bluetooth mic makes handsfree use at surface street speeds impossible, the steering is beyond numb, the throttle lags in both directions ..., but it looks like a Tonka toy so everyone thinks it's a great car. Oh, by the way, being able to tow 2,000 lbs is nothing to be proud of. Look at the weight of any purpose trailer (like a very small popup camper). I bought a new 2018 Subaru XV (Crosstrek) a month ago after much review watching/reading and test drives and I'm very happy I did. The interior is spacious and comfortable. Living here in Sydney, Australia our roads are very average so the ride in the Subaru is comfortable. Acceleration is more than adequate in city/suburban settings and the steering is light, responsive and confident. The CV transmission (we don't have the manual option but there are paddles if you're into that) is solid though tends to need high revs for a change in the upper gears. I've recently taken it out onto motorways and highways that included significantly steep inclined mountain climbs and, even though it had to work at it, the Subaru did keep up with other cars doing 100+ kph but I was conscious of not letting the revs go too high for the first 1,000km of its life. Everything worked well - the sat. nav., the music system, the a/c, lane departure (which can be turned off), voice recognition and brakes. I haven't used the cruise control yet as I'm wanting a change in speeds and revs to help the engine settle in. Another trip outside the city limits also had the same results and the XV (Crosstrek) had a respectable 6L/100km fuel economy.
