Due to having Samoyeds in our house for over twenty years i can confirm all of this but not all those reasons are negative. Plus the fact that having a Samoyed in your family will enrich your life tenfold. They are a fantastic breed for families, no smelly dog odour after petting, they are loving, loyal, patient, obediant(when properly trained) & make friends with anyone who wants to be friends, animal or human. I wouldnt have any other breed about the house after owning Samoyeds. Beautiful souls.

I totally agree with you 100%! Our Samoyed Frost fills our hearts with joy every day. They do calm down as they get older. He is almost 12 and he is super intelligent. He loves people and wants to meet everyone we encounter during our walks. He is also super protective. It's so true that they don't have any smell. Frost only barks at large trucks that go by during our walks. He is pretty much pretty quiet around the house.

Honestly, that's how I feel about my Keeshond. I just wish they weren't so rare anymore. Sammys seem a bit easier to acquire. I wouldn't mind a mix breed of the two either. So, also looking at the eurasier (I think it's spelled?) which IIRC also has keeshond and samoyed mixed with a couple other breeds.

@@magstrid4295 You don't want them to be common if you care about them. I used to foster for Samoyeds, because there was a little craze in California for them, because they are beautiful and nice dogs. I adore them - BUT if they are hard to own. They shed an incredible amount, and people would give them up for that reason alone. You need to be matched with your dog. I was willing to spend a few hours a week combing them out and giving up an entire weekend to properly bathe and groom them once a month. I'm a rarity. I would do this for dogs, I was temporary owner of, to give them up to people that promised to do it for the rest of their lives.

I have had a male Samoyed for over 9 years, and what you say is spot on, except the barking; whilst Samoyeds are known to be "vocal", mine only barks about twice a year whether he needs to or not! But as a companion, he is second-to-none. Truly wonderful dogs!

Mine would generally whine, but they also used physical interaction to make their wants known. I really loved my dogs. I miss them coming up to me and nudging me to be pet or picked up. They are very sweet, but hard to own dogs. I will always remember them, they certainly improved my life, and I was very happy and fortunate to have them. I don't miss the massive amounts of hair they produced though :) Such sweet, and demanding dogs. I used to foster for these dogs, I kept the best two out of 20. I will never have that opportunity again. I needed them, and they needed me. Just a wonderful relationship I had. I will never be able to duplicate that. If anything deserves an afterlife, they do, and if there is no afterlife, I welcome oblivion as well. What a terrible thing I had to do to put them down. Worst thing I ever had to do, but it was a merciful death. I won't get that.

My 9 year old male samoyed isnt that picky, he is lovely on the leash, when he was a puppy i trained that everytime he pulled, i made him stop. it really worked. BUT when he sees another dog or something else he wants to do, it all goes out the window. I agree with all of this. Saying that, he is the most in tune dog aswell. I call him my own nurse because he literally licks my tears away. Kisses and love all day long and he is my best friend. I love every day with him. If you can get a samoyed, i would recommend them. Very soulful caring dogs.

Responsible? --The Samoyed requires daily brushing. -And spending so much time with a dog generates attachment. -You can not feed your dog with a lot of meat (even chicken). -You don't need to walk 3 hours every day. The need to think that they did a good job in any activity is what a dog values. Most of the problems they mention are more because they "don't really know how to treat the Samoyed". So they did what they could along the way (literally, the Samoyed doesn't even require more than a bath every 2 months, brushing it daily is enough). In fact no one should be bathing his dogs. It is enough to brush them mostly, the earth dries up and falls off on its own after a few hours. only the ones with almost no fur because their skin can retain bacteria.

Can confirm all of this 😂. My Samoyed is almost 2 and being trained as a service dog, it drives me crazy and the training often feels impossible , but in time we will get there. Luckily I love my big goof to the moon and back. 😑 I think his stubbornness and reactivity is the worst. He demands to greet every animal and dog he sees and sounds so aggressive to those unfamiliar with the breed.😅

I have a Samoyed and a Samsky. They are not stubborn, very smart and obedient. You do need to know how to train them, they really don't like a firm and hand. We use a lot of shaping to teach them and that really sticks. Hunting is one of our biggest challenges. The Samsky is pretty good and reliable around Wildlife. We Used the book from Simone Mueller Hunting together. The Samoyed has still a way to go in that department. We are making progress. Exercise is why we got these rescues. We love canicrossing (running with your dog attached to you on a bungee line) and Step Jøring (kick biking with your dog attached to your Kick bike with a bungee line). They can pull their little hearts out and they will be chill the rest of the day. I wouldn't get a sled dog unless you have plans to let them pull. Otherwise they can be very enjoying to walk. Our dogs don't pull on normal walks, only when they are wearing their pulling harness. Grooming is a lot of work. I can't live without my K9 dryblower :) Buy an expensive one, it will change your life! Food is not a problem for our dogs, they eat about anything. Fish is the big favourite. The sounds they make can be annoying. I got used to it and try to keep it to a minimum. When they are exited to go for a run they are loud :). The Samsky likes to be scratched and pampered. The Samoyed thinks he is a lapdog and snuggles with us all day. If you live a a very warm and humid country, don't get a Samoyed. It's really hard for them to lose the heat. You can not exercise them properly without risking heatstroke. They are also at greater risk to get skin problems when its to hot for them. I think they are great dogs, very sweet and kind towards people. I find them really silly and full of personality. They make me laugh a lot. If you want the fluffy looks, but not the all the running and pulling you could consider a Eurasier. Calmer and easier to train too.

My unneutered male Samoyed lived to be 13.5 years previously. He never barked. He was a magnificent animal. Our current Samoyed is almost 14 . We got her for our daughter when she was 8 years old. They are very bonded. I cannot imagine life without our Samoyed. She is into everything we do and we find this to be very charming. She has a very good diet of sardines, herring, fresh organs (chicken and beef livers, gizzards, hearts, etc.), fresh vegetables , Hills" WD " kibble and Dr Marty's "Nature's Blend". She is very healthy in spite of being diabetic. She has lost weight (now 50 lbs) and no longer gets IVDD because of that. Yes - Samoyeds are expensive and require good food, exercise and companionship. Of course, they require vaccinations and vet visits. We figure that we spend about $130-$150/month on ours, apart from the initial cost.(Ours was $1,400 14 years ago.) You will find yourself falling in love with this dog. They are gentle and extremely loyal and bonded with their families. Don't expect this dog to be left in the backyard in a cage!! I cannot imagine life without her. Her beautiful smile has lifted my mood 10,000 times. Thank God for Samoyeds! What a sublime creature from the hand of God!

It's so nice to know that these traits are the same with most Samoyeds! I have a male one that is one and a half and It felt like these behaviours only happened with him, as you never see anyone else talking about these things. So THANK YOU for sharing this ❤
@fuzzywzhe

OK, I need to warn you to prepare you. I used to foster for these dogs, and they're pretty easy to own until about 2. At 2, they really start to shed. Your dog has BARELY shed yet. The reason I did foster, is because they're really cute dogs, they're fun, and affectionate, and they are just overall great - then they get to 2, and shed and shed and shed and shed. People get over-whelmed with it. My friend in rescue used to bring their dog out on a grooming table, and blow their coat out with a leaf blower. It looked like it was snowing. Birds will clean up. Got to be careful with that too, if you hit their ears with the blower, you can hurt them. You are going to have to get used to grooming them a lot. You can turn their hair into yarn as well. You can find people that will do it.
@gemmagale3591
@gemmagale3591 11 ай бұрын
@fuzzywzhe I'm fully aware of the shedding and how bad it can be. That stuff doesn't bother me at all. I did a lot of research before getting our boy. You just don't see anyone talking about the more difficult traits. People online usually only post the fun cute stuff and not all these other behaviours etc.
@fuzzywzhe
@fuzzywzhe 11 ай бұрын
@@gemmagale3591 Had an adult Samoyed before? I did plenty of research. I did dog rescue to make certain I could be a good caretaker, and the biggest nightmare is that I had FOUR of them for about 4 months. If I wasn't working, I was combing. Since I fostered, I concentrate on the worst aspects of the dog. Beyond the shedding is how needy they are. I like needy dogs, but it even taxed me. I don't regret having my dogs at ALL, but man, so much work. We got Samoyeds dumped in rescue for a reason. They are NOT for casual owners. I had labs as a kid, they were downright easy. Leaf blower works well, but BE CAREFUL, and the dog should be on a grooming table so they can't suddenly move their head. You can blow out an eardrum. Oh yeah, here's another recommendation - get them a show collar instead of a normal collar. A show collar is a nylon choke. When it's not in use, it hangs loose, and it won't break their hair. Be certain it's not too long or they can step into it and this will hobble them - that's happened to one of my dogs - the choke should be just big enough to fit over their head without you having to stuff it on. If your dog is free to roam the woods, I would NOT suggest they have this sort of collar, because it can snag on something and your dog might get stuck somewhere, immobilized. They are very comfortable, and they basically disappear into the fur. Put the tags on the OTHER end than you connect the leash to. If you put tags on the same end you connect the leash to, eventually you're going to hook the rings of the tags, and once your dog pulls, it will pull the rings apart.

I have an 8 month old Samoyed hes adorable , I always had Malamutes before but when my boy passed away we decided to get a Samoyed. I think as we always had malamutes we were ready for the stuborn puppy. He is doing so well with his training the biggest issue is he wants to say hello to everyone so its hard to keep his attention and like my malamutes he learns quickly but will do it on his terms . One thing I didn't expect was just how vocal he is like many have said its when he's happy. I brush him every night which keeps his coat matt free, lick mats are amazing for that.
@brickerhaus
@brickerhaus Жыл бұрын
The part about attracting attention is no joke. Atlas is a service animal, and everyone wants to pet him. Then they see the do not pet patch on his harness and they are almost angry. Or there gets to be line of people wanting to pet him and take a picture with him. 😵‍💫 Most of the time I let people pet him. Especially those little kids that are staring at him and can't stop staring. A simple "do you want to pet him?" And they can't say a word but shake their head yes enthusiastically. Too cute. He gets worn out from people though, and if there are too many people trying to pet him he looks at me like "are we done Dad?" I have to pick him up for a cuddle every so often when we are in big crowds. They are big babies, even though they have a ferocious bark. #SamoyedLife

I adopted a Pomeranian from a shelter. She is a wreck. One tooth, old, tumor removed, bad heart, deaf, going blind. Watching this is exactly my Poms personality! I hear they are a relative of your breed. Yes exactly. Wow. Incredibly stubborn. It’s been a year and while I’ve made little progress in training her, she has made leaps and bounds in training me. When goals are impossible, love and acceptance is another kind of happiness. This is a dog unlike any animal I’ve ever known. I do not recommend even though I accept & love her.

If she was not walked 2x a day (or one really long hike), she would just climb over the 5 foot wall and take herself out for exercise. We would get a phone call from someone 2 miles away saying, "we have your dog, she was just jogging down the street." I loved her unique personality and independent spirit! However, we haven’t had these issues… 2 pulling - not an issue, she walks well on the lead 4 barking - not too bad, only when very excited 6 cuddling - she loves it 10 exercise - ours likes to play more than walk

Oh my goodness! I agree with basically everything except the smart part. We had a chow samoyed mix named Biscuit. He looked exactly like your Felix, but had the notoriously black/purple tongue of the chow chow. If we knew his personality would be what it was, Biscuit would not have been his name. We were sad he didn't like to cuddle either. We picked him from the litter of four at 3 weeks old, and brought him home at 8 weeks. Biscuit was very intelligent and adding that to his stubbornness, it made training him worse. He graduated from 2 obedience classes/schools doing everything almost perfectly. Got home, and right back to listening only if he wanted to. We were both military and had to move to a duty station that unfortunately made it too difficult to keep him. We gave him to family friends. Samoyeds are very unique dogs. They do require knowledgeable dog owners with prior experience. This video of yours was awesome. Felix seems very much like Biscuit. Big, beautiful, fluffy, fun-loving, active fur babes. Thanks for sharing.😊❤

I’ve never met a friendlier breed, and they’re so patient with kids and small dogs (supervision is always advised). I’ve had my Samoyed, Ghost, for over 10 years and he’s the most intelligent, gentle, opinionated and loyal companion. He voices his opinion and argues with me about things he wants 😆 he’s not at all food motivated, which makes training challenging, and he still pulls on walks despite his age. Can confirm that everybody wants a pat when we’re walking and if not then they usually comment on how clean he is (he’s not, it’s an illusion), or they’ll wish me a good drag 🚶🏻‍♀️

This video is fair about the potential issues. Sadly, I think it should be said that like many larger dogs, Samoyeds do not have the longest life expectancy. One of mine only made it to eight years, the other one, ten. On the other hand, they are fun-loving, natural mood boosters who pack a lot of living in their time with us❤

Due to my absolute Love of big dogs, Sammy's have always appealed to me due to that beautiful white coat. Living in South Florida means I have to base decisions on how comfortable they will be in a high temperature environment and this is simply not the place for Sammy's, Malamutes or other thickly coated dogs. I am sensitive to their needs as well as my own and though I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to adopt one, I have to agree that they would be better suited to a cooler climate. Thanks for your insights, it was very helpful.

I’ve had 3 Samoyeds. All of them have been fussy about food. Our current Samoyed Angel eats raw food. She is difficult to train as not food oriented. She has the Samoyed selective hearing, she heard you but…. Luckily we found an excellent professional groomer locally. She pulls if she spots a squirrel 🐿️ 🐱 etc. and she does not always like to be crowded by people or other dogs

I used to do dog fostering and rescue for these dogs. The main reason not to get one, is they shed more than you can imagine. I was well known at work at the guy that had a Samoyed because I left hair everywhere. My desk chair was covered with it, no matter how careful I was. I never wore black. They are sweet and wonderful dogs, but don't underestimate how difficult it is to have such a dog. I vacuumed everyday. The hair weaves into your clothing. When you see somebody displaying this dog online here, it's right after after they vacuumed, I guarantee it. The reason rescue existed for these dogs, is predominately how much they shed. It's enormous. You can't underestimate it, they are the worst at shedding that you can imagine. They are beautiful and gorgeous, but people get overwhelmed. I spent several hours every week combing them out. People gave up their dogs because of the work in having them, and they still loved them. You can make these dogs relatively non-shedding by blowing them out with a leaf blower or something, but that only lasts a few days. I adore these dogs, but I don't recommend them. You better really really really love them to have them. They are very sweet, but so is a lab. So is a mutt. I know they are adorably cute, and they have a personality to match, but you pay for this. They are super hard to own just because of their shedding.
@sire2215
@sire2215 9 ай бұрын
Honestly thank you for this comment! The shedding would honestly be the main problem for me, but these dogs are just so incredibly beautiful! I wish there was a similar breed that had hair mixed with fur so it wouldn’t be as much of a problem. They are just so eye catching and beautiful!
@fuzzywzhe
@fuzzywzhe 9 ай бұрын
@@sire2215 They are certainly beautiful and definitely sweet. If you want to TRY one, you could always join dog rescue and foster. That's how I got into it. First, I had this neighbor with this GORGEOUS sweet dog, and I later found out it was a Samoyed. Then when I got out of college, I joined a Samoyed Rescue. Then I had several that I fostered, then I got a dog that really needed some help, he was neglected before, he was a mix, and he was just wonderful, so I kept him. I knew exactly what I was getting into when I adopted him. Another word of caution, when you bathe them, you have to be VERY CAREFUL to remove all soap. If you don't, a week, two weeks, maybe even 3 weeks later, they'll get a hot spot. I would dump my dogs in the bathtub, soap them up, completely immerse them to wash them out, empty the tub, refill it, and rinse them again. Took about 2 hours. Then a night to dry to dampness, then a day of combing them out in the next day afternoon, partially, then Sunday to finish the job. They have to be brushed frequently, or they will develop mats. Most dogs enjoy being combed out so it's a pleasant experience unless you hit a snag. You want to use a rake.

@@stephenkennedy8305 How old are your dogs? First 2 years isn't too bad, but as they age, they shed more. Indoor dogs live twice as long as outdoor dogs, seriously. When they are young, they are hardy. As your dogs get older, I bet they want to be inside. I live in Sunnyvale, California. We have very consistent weather, we don't get snow. We only have like August when it gets really hot.

I'm on my second Samoyed, the two were from totally different bloodlines and YES! All 10 of these characteristics are true. The nuances change a little from one dog to another, but they are in fact very common in the breed. But I think the main ones are: Stubbornness, hair everywhere and attracting attention... if you don't have patience with stubbornness, don't like hair in your house, clothes and even in food and don't like interacting with strangers and, especially, with children on the street, it's better to rethink... if you don't have problems with that, have one, they are WONDERFUL

The Samoyed that we'll be getting is too young to leave his mothers side at the moment so we are taking our time and waiting for the right time. Since my Border Collie is also really active, I'm hoping they will be a good match.

If you are considering a Samoyed then be advised this video is pretty spot on accurate! We've raised, bred and shown Sam's for over 40 years. We've never been without them from as many as 5 to the two we currently have (M 7yrs/F 2yrs). Match your dog with your patience, ability to care for what THEY need, your energy, your home, your kids, what your REALITY is. Once you bring a Samoyed into your life your life will never return to "normal". For us these "10 reasons" are simply things that you must recognize and manage. We've trained them. Our current Male even made it to Photographer's/Art model. Our Female on the other hand refuses to be manipulated at all. But, so be it. We have had so many for so long that they are a "genetic" part of our family. Like all family members you have to make room for their quirks, character and personality. No two are the same. But, be advised, don't get a Samoyed unless you are prepared to be owned by them body, heart and soul, quirks, character, personality, and every other thing this video mentions. To us such things management issues. The indomitable heart of a Samoyed and their ability to become an inseparable member of the family so far outweigh the "10 reasons" that we have never wished to own any other breed. But, go in with your eyes wide open, or don't go in at all.

We got our first Samoyed in 1978. It ruined us for any other breed. All these things you say are true and some. The females we have had are mighty huntresses. They like to talk and sing too. My son started breeding and showing Samoyeds and has done well. We have learned a lot from his training for shows and it has helped with the pulling. This happened after about 20 years of Samoyed ownership but better late than never. We love our floofs. They bring so much joy to our lives.

And so, is it a good idea to get a Samoyed? Thanks for answering

we had Sams for a long time. I love them. they are crazy goofballs, but they are such happy dogs, and they love, love, love the snow! we finally switched to our current dog who is a rat terrier, because we really don't have the knees to handle 60-pound dogs who love to pull. but we used to harness them up and let them pull a sled to the grocery store over the snow, when it isn't safe to drive car, and they loved to do that, too. just grab the harness off the wall hook and let the barking and woo-wooing commence! I miss my Sams, but I'm getting old and rickety now, so I had to mellow out. if I get my knees replaced some day, I might go for another Sam. they are definitely never boring!!
