@Andy Gadd LOL, you’re funny. Do you really think so many nations would be foolish enough to buy it if it couldn’t fly in the rain? That was old news when the F-35 was undergoing initial testing and at that particular time wasn’t set up to handle lightning strikes. Russia’s EW doesn’t work. Read about it from the Armenian commander who complained when its forces were getting trashed by Turkish drones. And when it comes to Russia’s best fighter, the Su-35, nations that signed up to buy it are running away from it because of its outdated radar. First Egypt canceled its remaining order after its Su-35s lost to Rafales in exercises. The Su35s were jammed by the Rafale’s SPECTA. This should not be a surprise as the Chinese were able to do the same with their J-10’s. And now Algeria has canceled its Su-35 order because of its PESA radar. They’re going to wait and see if the Su-57 works as advertised.

Once the F-35 rolls back air defenses, the F-15EX brings a lot to the party

Even before that, an F-1 'SEX' can paint hostile airspace with radar from the periphery, which really empowers the F-35's passive sensor suite. And if the AIM-260 ever actually comes out, or people get tired of waiting and Boeing develops the LRAAM, then the F-15EX can offer "sniper support" from the sidelines. And both planes get the best gas mileage at mach 0.95. It's a good team.

@@RickClifton exactly. Every person(jet I suppose) has their part. F22 escort, F35 sensor/uav connectivity, B2 initial command/control bombing. Then once the enemy jets are flying and stealth bombers are done, F35 can connect to the F15s in the back giving them targets to shoot while F22 holds front line. Once complete air superiority is achieved, bring in the B52s for carpet bombing if necessary. Or maybe do the air superiority first then being B52s then no need for B2. Also may want to send in some stealth jets to strike Sam sites and things like that. (This is all theory, Im no general😅)

He sort of glossed over a very important point, when he said the F-35 can fight without limiations. What dos that mean? For any missons requiring stealth and full survivability, they can load up both internal ordinanced bays of the F-35 with a total of 6000 pounds of high explosive smart weapons and all of the fuel tanks and still maintain the aircraft's full 1.6 Mach top speed and all of its impressive maneuverability envelope. All of it's competition have to mount all of their ordinace externally. This reduces those aircrafts' roll rate and maneuverability envelopes, limiting, say, a Super Honet to about Mach 1.3 top speed. And its roll rate wil be reduced, what with all of that weight hanging off the wing's lower surface. For missions mnot requireing stealth, the F-35 can lift well over its own empty weight in internal and external ordinance and fuel, making ithe F-35 also a great bomb truck. Simply put, all of the aerodynamic advantages plus all of the technological improvements make the F-35 the best and, frankly, only Gen 5 multi-role attack plane in the world. That means in real world combat situations the bandit going up against the F-35,es especially the F-35A CTOL variant won't even see ithe F-35 electronically or visually until it has ordinance launched against it. The F-35 has a great new fuel efficient engine, enabling supercruise ie cruise at higher mach numbers than any Gen 4 fighter-attack plane can match. This equates to greater range, there larger combat radius. The F-35's stealth aka 'low observables' mean the F-35 gets the first shot in the fight, a huge advantages almost every time. And, critically, its superior lethality and survivability mean the F-35 can make it back from missions in heavily defended airspace that the Super Hornet, Saab Gripen etc simply cannot match. Its sensor fusion gives the F-35 pilot the critical edge in aerial combat. The F-35's electronic bells and whistles are unsurpassed worldwide. And th spefcil helme worn by F-35 pilots gives them visual advantages to keep the bandit in sigh a all times, anoher key capability or winning in air-to-air combat. Bottom line: any nation who chooses any multi-role fighter-attack plan other than the F-35 and your fighter will finish in second place against the F-35 at a ratio of about 15: 1. As Viper said in Top Gun: "...There are no points for second place" in aerial combat.

Without a doubt the best fighter aircraft for the price! I think what a lot of people do not understand is the advanced sensor suite that truly gives it the edge, this coupled to stealth gives it a first look, first shot capability well ahead of any other fighter barr the F22! And in air to air combat it is the first to see you that tends to win! I for one am happy we have some of the B variants for the Royal Navy on our two new Carriers, and we should go for more A variants to supplement our Typhoons which would be a massive improvement all around for the Royal Air Force as well!

Well if the fighter is the best. Why the US Navy are so eager to change the F-35 & the Super Hornet for the next gen of fighter, they openly say they miss the Tomcat that they want a new version Tomcat with two engins. And why the Air Force are doing upgrade to the F-22 when that fighter wasn't even supposed to have upgrade. Not only that, the F-35 was supposed to replace many planes, The F-16, Super Hornet, A10, are still around. In fact they are working on a new version of the A10, the USAF are looking to buy F-15EX and the F-16 latest block are selling like cup cake. And the Navy on top of that that want to replace the F-35 and the F-18 Super Hornet at the same time with the next gen Navy fighter something that will match the performance and the combat capability of the Tomcat. This shows that the F-35 isn't loved that much. Keep this in mind, originally the F-35 was design to replace the Harrier Jump jet. And these advance sensor can be installed on any model of fighter.

@@lepompier132 It's called having a mix of assets and with over 770 already built and orders for many more, it is already more than a success. I do think the US did make a mistake and should have made a twin engine variant to go along with the single engine F-35...call it an F-36 (or a more cost effective F-22) as you cannot please everyone, especially Army, Navy and Airforce. As to the new fighter jet programmes in the US, UK and France, this is a must to keep at the bleeding edge or else lose the advantage built over decades of fighter design and production...

Well as for the upgrades the f22 wasn't supposed to need, it probably doesn't really but seeing as we're testing shit for NGAD 6thgen and the full-scale prototype of that 6th gen fighter has already flown. Coupled with the f22 and the NGAD having a known connection/post release relationship due to the little released. They prefer it because it's easier to fly. Other than that, it's capabilities as a warfighter are grossly overstated. It is in no way an effective replacement for air superiority or close air support aircraft. It has a niche role as a tactical strike aircraft, but even then it needs to be supported by other assets. It's portrayal as a superweapon that will just roll over Russian or Chinese air defenses is utter nonsense, especially given that it's stealth features vs the latest detection measures already in service, is irresponsibly overstated.
@kathrynck
@kathrynck 2 жыл бұрын
@@shade9272 I beg to differ on pretty much every point of yours. But I don't really want to write a 3 part book series to explain it in great detail. But here's a bit of food for thought: - It is currently a match for the F-22 in air to air combat. Although the F-22 just got funding for some badly needed upgrades to put it back on top. But as of right now, I'd feel safer in an F-35 in a hostile airspace than any other aircraft flying. - HOBS + HMDS is completely re-writing the rules of air to air combat. Don't get stuck thinking about planes getting on each others' "6" to get a gun sight on target, that's "plan C" at best these days. - The "close" in "close air support" refers to the placement of the ordinance (in close proximity to friendly forces), not the proximity of the aircraft. An F-35 pilot at 45,000 feet can tell you when an enemy soldier is peeing in the bushes, in real time. And with an internal load of 8 SDB-II's, he can target 8 individual moving targets on the ground simultaneously, in different directions, out to about 50 miles from the aircraft, with relatively cheap ordinance, which is resistant to a wide range of countermeasures. The A-10 was a cool plane, but it can't even come close to that, and can no longer survive in a threat environment against even a decently funded 3rd world adversary. - It has range comparable to an F-15EX, which makes it among the longest ranged fighters int he world. - Sustained speed is also comparable to an F-15EX, only a handful of fighters in the world are faster. - The engine is finally reaching the end of it's improvement process, and looks like in addition to some fuel savings, it will be rated for over 48,000 lbs of max thrust (comparable to the F-15A with 2 P&W F100 engines). - T:W ratio "on paper" is rather skewed by the fact that it has a huge amount of internal fuel capacity. This is to allow for great range on internal fuel for stealth reasons. If you compare an F-35 against most other fighter aircraft "with 300 nm worth of fuel" it's T:W ratio is actually just fine. - It's radar is by the most advanced in the world. And combined with it's one of a kind set of other passive & active sensors, and sensor fusion, it's ability to detect adversary hardware is unparalleled. It can do AWAC, ELINT, Wild Weasle, Air to Air, Recon, and Air to Surface, and Deep Strike, without changing anything except the relevant ordinance. It's designed to fight (and win) in an IRST-rich environment, which is the emergent "anti-stealth" tech. - The STOVL B model is absolutely revolutionary in that class of aircraft (compared to the AV-8) - The large development cost is because really they designed 3 different planes, with some interchangeable parts The fact that it's quite stealthy is just icing. And some of it's advantages can't even be discussed. I do agree that it's not really designed to do air superiority. But it's so good at what it does do, that it encroaches on that job significantly. Especially since there are so few F-22's (which cost 4 times as much per unit, and twice as much per hour to fly). It does have some shortcomings and a few growing pains, most notable being $40,000/flight hour operational cost (half of an F-22's flight hour cost, but twice than of an F-16). The international production sourcing is a headache. And the inclusion of a cannon is really somewhat outside it's wheelhouse. But overall even the 700 already produced represents a dramatic shift in global air power. And no, I don't work for Lockheed. I work for a competitor, I just have an honest appreciation for what they've accomplished.

@kathrynck
@kathrynck 2 жыл бұрын
@@2adamast The AN/APG-81 radar has many very clever features, and is part of a larger sensor suite which is without peer. - It's able to rapidly cycle through many frequencies to make detecting or triangulating it more difficult - it is active/passive dual mode, able to track targets from radar emissions not coming from the plane. - it can track adversary radars - it can perform ELINT snooping - the supplemental passive arrays go full 360 around the plane with no blind spots - it can generate fairly powerful jamming, and focus it intensely in a narrow beam to avoid being obvious in all directions. The F-35's built-in EW capability is extremely robust, without the need for external pods. - it can designate specific small areas within it's sweep to 'black out' and not broadcast into. - This is further integrated into the plane's virtual sense of space & sensor fusion, so as the plane moves, or the target moves, it can keep track of the narrow cone around the identified target, into which it's radar won't broadcast. - the F-35 also has 360 degree IRST (infrared search & track) and electro-optical coverage. Which is also sensor-fused with the radar, passive arrays, and virtual modeling of space. - The IRST is extremely sensitive, and linked to a learning AI to identify targets with very small IR signatures & poor resolution at longer ranges. It's more likely to detect the presence of a target, and will be able to identify a target, at longer ranges than most other IRST systems (likely 'all' other IRST systems, though that would require espionage to be certain of). - The power and range of the APG-81 is classified, but "huge" is a good descriptor. - This huge range is doubly useful for having a rear-echelon F-35 broadcasting loud & proud, while passive-only F-35's operate a hundred kilometers closer to the potential targets. - it's probably also worth pointing out that the data link system is highly directional, to avoid adversary interception, jamming, or detection. Turning off the engine to avoid IR detection is an interesting idea. Couldn't do it for very long (for obvious reasons), but it could be a useful tactic in a couple situations. More likely you'd want to head down to the deck, into thick air with a lot more particulate mater in it, or head into clouds. Both of which considerably diminish IR detection range. The F-35's P&W F135 engine has a very high bypass ratio, which is very efficient & runs cooler than most other fighters. And it has air channels around the engine (to limit airframe heating) and around the exhaust nozzle which bleed cool air into the exhaust flow. It's the most adept fighter currently flying in terms of tackling IR-based combat & stealth. Being stealthy while also detecting adversary targets, is a very complicated game of cat & mouse, with no "perfect" solutions. But the F-35 is better at it by far, than anything else. This is the main reason why it's more dangerous than the F-22 is right now. The F-35 really arguably has an upper hand over the F-22. Although the F-22 would become stronger if it survives long enough to get into close range. Even then though, the HOBS + HMDS set-up in the F-35 makes it a more fair fight at visual range than you'd think. The F-22 just got funding last month ($11B) to get upgrades, and get it caught up in many (but not 'all') of these areas. But the F-22 cost $400M each, and $80,000/flight hour, while the F-35 costs $80-110M each (depending on model), and $40,000/flight hour. (that's 320m vs 640m over 8000 flight hours for operating costs). So even though the F-35 is at minimum "comparable" to the F-22 in a make-believe versus-mode at 1:1, if you include a budget behind the planes, it would really be a 3:1 numerical fight. The F-35 program, for all it's warts (and it does have some warts! particularly in the early years), represents the largest increase in western air power since 4th gen hit the skies in the 70's. Possibly much longer. The F-22 didn't really achieve that. Not with under 200 built, and it's astronomical pricing & upkeep. I don't think any other design has made as big of a performance increase (per dollar), since WWII. Unless you count a YF-12 flying around at mach 3.5/90,000ft with three air-to-air nukes... That's hard to top. But that wasn't broadly produced, and could be bad for the people of earth ;) Don't get me wrong, the F-22 is a fantastic design in many, many regards. It is better at flying high altitude with supercruise to give a rather advantageous BVR missile launch position, and good map-crossing mobility. And it's fantastic maneuverability makes it very strong in visual range. But the F-35 really aces the middle ground between those 2, where stealth & IRST have become the dominant technologies of aerial cat & mouse.

Awesome video. With Lockheed-Martin's experience and longevity in the military industry it's no wonder why they can provide such capable and reliable products like the F-35's and F-22's along with their products. The SR-7 family of aircraft will always be my all time favorite though. I am so lucky and fortunate to live jut outside of Seattle WA home of Boeing and it's Flight museum which has the sole surviving M21/D21 set and it also has a recovered cockpit from a crashed SR-71 that you can sit in and see the cockpit firsthand. Being able to walk around such a fine aircraft is amazing. I was born at Cannon AFB when my dad was stationed there before and shortly after I was born my dad got transferred to Nellis AFB where he was until he got out of the AF.

Seeing the performance of the Russian Airforce may have some people see our fifth gen planes as overkill but that really highlights the tactical advantage that the F35 will enjoy in large scale operations. The Russian Airfarce is currently unable to operate in scale and would be overwhelmed by wild weasel operations. Germany and Eqypt see this clearly. Sadly Russia is the global belligerent we thought they were and things like the F35 will keep Russia and China investing heavily to meet the quality of our fourth gen fighters while the f35 and its use of ISR will give the US a tactical force multiplier that the possible foes will be unable to counter for a decade or more.

Thanks for making this video. I was feeling lonely, as I have been defending this plane from the beginning. I always knew it was gonna make it. It would take hours for a person to learn all the capabilities in this jet. I’m still a big fan of the F22. Totally different jet. Having these two jets, we don’t need to build a six generation jet for a long, long time, unless researchers develop a jet with a Star Trek type “cloaking,” device that turns the jet completely invisible to visible light, radar, infrared and all sensors of any kind.

So many bad "reviews" and comments in the media about this A/C. Few weeks ago a clip about corrosion and so forth 🤧😤 That really ticked me off, cause some people do not know what they are talking about. Sooo much time and money was spend on design, development, development of new technology and systems. I started my career in Aviation and was involved in fabrication and production of fuselage, gas turbine engines for military A/C and Helicopters (Puma and Oryx), maintenance and refurbishments. Only the highest levels of perfection and QA/QC will do thank you. These individuals do what they do with commitment, passion and pride. @vegass04 2 жыл бұрын
I wish but I doubt that the F-35 will receive a new engine in a short to mid term time frame. The main reason is, of course, the money. But not only money, its more about priorities. USAF realised that something unimaginable could happen by the year 2030 - we could loose the capability to establish air superiority, at least in the South China Sea and the first island chain area. US military relies on air superiority and the best way of maintaining one in 2030s is by focusing on the next generation air dominance (NGAD) program. F-22 Raptor will remain the most dangerous and effective air supremacy aircraft until 2030,but after that, a 40 year old design won't be able to successfully fight it out with our enemies and come out on top. This is why money is needed for the NGAD program, even at the expense of cutting down the number of F-35s that the USAF planned to buy. Investing money in a new jet engine for the F-35, that would insignificantly improve our war fighting capabilities by extending the range of the F-35 by a 100 miles or so, is not worth the time or the money. We need significant leap in technology which only NGAD and B-21 Raider can provide. That means an unrefuled combat radius of at least 1200 miles, and a capability to carry 10 extremely long range air to air missiles internally. The best part of the NGAD program is the fact that this 6th gen fighter jet won't fly without an equally groundbreaking combined cycle jet engine. And later down the line that engine could be installed on the F-35 Super Lightning in the mid 2030s.

Good video. The big deal with the 4th and 4th+ Gen fighters is that they carry massive external stores as part of their combat loadout, something the Lightning II doesn’t normally do, unless it’s in a situation where stealth capabilities are less important, i.e. a permissive environment or one in which air superiority has been achieved. In denied environments, a “slick” F-35 can get much closer to threats, ID, designate, and track targets, and coordinate long-range, heavy weapons fires from the non-stealth “bomb trucks” like Super Hornets, Vipers, and Eagle IIs that sit back farther from the threat. While the older platforms are still quite expensive and less survivable in-close, they still play a key role in long-range combat against the sophisticated and networked detection systems and missiles of the bad guys. And when the F-35 DOES use external stores, it’s a true nightmare for anything or anyone on the receiving end, as it can absolutely load up. The Lightning II has had its growing pains, but I for one am damn glad it’s on our side.

Airframe, power plant, hydraulics, avionics etc. etc. etc. 4. Trainging of pilots and maintenance crews. 5. Ongoing process of testing and development until full production phase. The development phase is a continuous process - components design changes/alternatives etc . Even though the cost per unit has decreased due to various factors, the actual cost to get to full production is extremely high and time consuming. To produce this type of A/C is no easy feat and a lot of planning, design and detailing, man hours was spent. Small price to pay for air superiority and to stay ahead of your "opposition"

Problem with F35 is bomb/missle payload in it's modest hidden compartments. If you could reload midair, then it wouldn't be a problem. In war scenarios the bird needs to be able to loiter in the enemy threat then be able to control more weaponry onto the target. That's where the F15ex comes in. It can carry those payloads for the Fat Amy, while staying back out of reach from close threats.

It's still not a great dog fighter. They assume that doesn't matter. They gamble everything on stealth and situational awareness. And that would probably be fine against 4th gen fighters. But they might get in trouble assuming this when it faces off with another 5th gen fighter. When both airplanes are stealth and long range targeting systems don't work, you're back at dog fighting. Something this plane doesn't do well. It's fine as a light stealth bomber to replace the f-117 nighthawk. And it can hold it's own against 4th gen fighters. But i wouldn't call it the best fighter. Because it will be toast against other 5th gen fighter who are faster and more maneuverable.

@@tocu9808 That's what they assume yes. But historically, every commander who assumed too much got his ass handed to him. Their theory is highly dependent on the enemy playing by their rule book. If their stealth or their sensoring/targeting capabilities fails, they are screwed. Other countries don't sit still. They react by developing their own technology to counter the f35. If they come up with something capable of targeting the f35 at longer range. Or something that makes it impossible for the f35 to target them at long range. Something already worked on and possibly already exists within the Russian armed forces. You're basically stuck with a light tactical bomber only capable of defending itself against outdated airplanes in the near future. And that's fine. I just think it's more a replacement for the f-117 nighthawk than all those other planes. That's also how it's being used right now. Nato countries are already developing new air superiority fighters. So i expect them to know the f35 won't be able to do that task in the near future.

These deficiencies still exist on the F35: Slow - only Mach 1.6 which is slower than almost all first line generation 4 fighters. Relatively anemic climb and ceiling stats. Less range than the F15 EX Highly constrained internal weapons bay load out. Significant loss of stealth when carrying weapons and fuel on external pylons. No conformal fuel tank capability. Less nimble due to reduced wing surface area. Stealth effectiveness questionable when 4th and 5th Gen Russian planes like the su-57 and other recent generation planes use long range infra-red tracking . Questionable surviveability and endurance after battle damage due to single engine vs twin engine. There are accounts of F15's returning to base with wings shot off and still landing.
