Great video. Completely agree with all of your reasons for choosing Home Assistant. Another although less important reason for me is costs. My smarthome kicks every off the shelf smart homes’ ass, but costs less than half - and even works with HomeKit.

Very nice video with a lot of inputs for the newcomers. I just which that I had so much information when I started. 😊 Now we need to stabilize the solution, maybe with something like an LTS version. I have two installations in two different locations. The one that is more than 50 km away, I barely touch it and it works like a breeze. The one that I have at home, there is something to do, almost every night. The anxiety of the update results are killing me. 😂 Thank you for your support and fantastic contributions. All the Best and Take Care.

Just finally managed to find a way to run HA on existing hardware. All this after a few stumbles, trawling through jargon-filled forums, and some trial and error. It's working fine and is very basic. I'm still learning to set up automation. I like the dashboard customisation. I'll still run HA in parallel with my Amazon and Smart things set up so I have the best of all worlds. I have 4 years' worth of automation on the other two platforms, and I am not turning them off. HA will compliment them as there is no reason they can't run together as long as there are no conflicts. I'm sure as one gets more proficient with HA over time there will be more than can be done, but for now, it's just a new part of my smart home family. Cheers for the vid.

I use Domoticz which has all of that stuff as well. Domoticz is to HA as Linux is to Windows. HA has much better compatibility and support, but with Domoticz if you want to do it and it doesn't work you can probably make it work anyway as long as you can get over the steeper learning curve.

I love the mixing of different ecosystems and the very broad support. I love being able to use my very old Logitech Squeezebox (an internet radio which is not sold anymore for years) and create automations on it (turn on lights). Amazing that I can mix IKEA lights with a 10 year old internet radio. You can truly make all these things work together.

I use wireguard to remotely access my machine. Mine is running in a docker container on a Linux machine. Look up pivpn, makes it really simple to configure. Then open that port on your router and optionally set up a free dynamic domain name service to point at your home IP. Provided you use good encryption, it's very secure to just open the VPN port.

Agreed. However. What if we turn this upside down? HA is great we all know it. You can do what ever comes to your mind but there is a need to understand and to be able to design your system in a way that it would be as little effected of the possible changes on the updates as possible. How to reduce that risk!? I have just recently had to figure out some issues that came with the home assistant updates. Would be cool to have a video for this topic. My suggestions are. 1.Stay away from HACS 2.Stay away from HACS 3.Stay away from HACS I'm sure these are not what you would pick for :)

That was fun! But in a "you should use X" video it's really important to say compared to what? You mentioned so mmmm e alternatives, but for such a big investment as home automation, it would be great to quickly run down the other options at each stage. Great video! I totally agree with you. I think Paul Hibbert's "HOOME ASSISTANT!" hip thrust doesn't emphasize enough how great this piece of software is. My boss's "advanced smart home system" that he paid a lot of money for cannot do things my "shitty Rpi" can do. Regarding Nabu Casa, as a network engineer I could have bypassed paying for the remote reachability of the server with ddns, but for 1. it is sooo easy to set up and integrate with voice assistant (just could not bother with it) 2. the price is really reasonable, and wanted to support the development for HA.

Thanks for the video 😊. I'm currently on standalone Node-RED. This initially came to be because it would run on my underpowered hardware, where HA would not. This is no longer an issue. I've often heard HA and NR are a great match, but what exactly would it offer me? I'm open to the idea of switching to the combination, but every time I take a look at HA it just feels like a hassle to get anything configured as I don't know what is located where. I'm sure I could figure it out, but then I am still not entirely sure what I gain in addition (except maybe more integrations, but generally if it works with HA then NR could work with it the same way and I can buy equipment that just works with NR anyway). Not to bash HA, it always looks tempting, but curious if others made this particular switch and what made you do it / what did you gain?
@TheHellis
@TheHellis 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say the gain depends on your needs. There is a few things I think HA would make easier for you. Some things like heating doesn't need much configuration, all the automation is done for you. But I doubt anyone knew where everything was in HA when they first installed it. Keep in mind that HA needs time to understand and learn how to use so don't give up to soon.
@cerietke
@cerietke 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHellis To be fair Node-RED takes time to get working too. But what are those things HA makes easier? I understand that I might get more devices working out of the box, but I am fine getting things working myself whether it needs MQTT (M5 Stack/Tasmota), HTTP calls (MyStrom), Telnet (Denon), terminal commands (my data backups and keeping the music on my phone up-to-date) or some format I am not yet familiar with, if there's no NR node for it yet. What would I gain that goes beyond the device integration?
@EverythingSmartHome
@EverythingSmartHome 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I think it comes down to which style you prefer and makes more logical sense to you when creating automations
@TheHellis
@TheHellis 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's not only automations. With HA you can build your own devices fairly easy using ESP-Home. You can integrate your phone both as a trigger and an action. Meaning you can either trigger on settings or you can send settings/actions to the phones. I have a bed sensor in ESP-Home and HA monitors my phones alarm time in the morning. When it rings it gives me a few minutes to get out of bed, if I'm still in bed then it sends a new alarm to the next minute, then checks to make sure the alarm got set (if not tries again). When the alarm goes of the second time it gives me one minute to get out of bed or it repeats the actions above.

@oscargr_
@oscargr_ 2 жыл бұрын
Question. You say one reason is that it provides "local control" Now if I buy for example TP link smart switches... They come with their own app, which I think means that the actual switching is done through their servers? (You click button on the app, app connects to TP-Link server, which replies with a command to the switch??) I understand that with home assistant I don't use the TP-Link app, but how does HA get/make/send the command to switch on or off back to the hardware?
@EverythingSmartHome
@EverythingSmartHome 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I think I mentioned in this video (or might have been a previous one) that it depends on the devices that you buy, but you should buy local devices as well as a local smart home platform.

The most important disadvantage is that home assistant is not free like smartthings. I was used to turning on the lights using Alexa, which in home assistant you have to pay for. Home assistant is hopeless compared to smarttings. Examples: sometimes it shows that the lights are on when they are not on, sometimes the thermostats are offline, then after 2 days they are online, Motion sensors sometimes work and sometimes they don't work. I thought it would be faster because it is local compared to smartthings - it is not. I am disappointed with how it works after watching videos praising the home assistant. I think most of these videos are sponsored.
