@@Saveddrip Actually their performance time of 40 minutes was cut in half because Usher was A) late for his show and B) didn't stop playing after his time was up. I would be pretty upset too if my time was cut in half due to some sub-par artist's lack of professionalism...

The fact that Metallica played the most vulgar song in their ENTIRE catalogue when they were told to not curse is one of the best middle fingers I could think of. I'm pretty sure the original was banned in it's home country for a bit because it was considered too obscene. Freaking love it.

@Alfred Smochina funny that at the time Load was widely considered as a weak album, but I think that it's one of their greatest albums alongside Justice, Black album, and St.Anger.

@Dylan2709 Correct. But they did a studio cover of it, and put it on a b-side for the "International Single Part 1" for "Sad But True", and the International Vinyl Single for "The Unforgiven". Then they later put it on the cover compilation "Garage Inc."

He's doing that on purpose either that or he's got a terrible cold. Watch some Tiny Desk concerts on MPR. Haven't you ever been to a rock concert? They usually only lip synch when they have horrible colds or flu, or their voice is worn out. Most concerts I have been to (Mr. Bungle, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Quicksand, Helmet, Rickie Skaggs, Primus etc.) all sounded as good but somewhat different than the albums. Now when I saw Iron Maiden in Liousville Bruce Dickenson had a terrible cold and soar throat but still sang, just not nearly as well.

Yep. At the very-very least it would be an option to do what Sabbaths did with Paranoid at the Beat Club or Deep Purple with Black Night at some charts show - play very close to the original but still live. Speaking of which, Deep Purple lip-synched "Fireball", but guitarist Ritchie Blackmore "played" his guitar holding it in flipped (back to front). :D

Hey professional Audio and Lighting tech here! You can totally pull that off live. Some shows just have programmed effects that are saved to hot keys that you press on the board so you can run the show off of that and help get timing to fit in with a live show. I’ve heard it been called busking!

Since the reason Metallica not playing King Nothing is not mentioned, here is the reason for anyone curious as to why they played what they played. "Of special note was that MTV executives notified the band Metallica that expletives were prohibited during their live TV performance. The band was upset by this so the band disregarded performing their scheduled single "King Nothing" and played the non-TV friendly songs "Last Caress" (has lyrics pertaining to murder and rape) and "So What?" (known for its bestiality and other controversial subjects content). The result was the performance and any references to Metallica during the ceremony have been removed from future broadcasts of the ceremony." Word of mouth was that the executives that told Metallica this was a bit of an ass about it, which is what set Metallica off.
