Here is a saying you might like: When ask if and would, never deny yourself the chance to say yes. You may just discover something about yourself on the way. It is just like the fool in tarot cards. You can be the fool and miss something beyond belief for saying no yet there is a chance of it being bad so no matter what it is better to be the fool that says yes then the fool that says no. So get out there and EXPLORE AND SOAR!

I came across this series by accident and it has become one of my favorite series to watch. Travelling across the US by train with your friends, but more importantly with your parents was absolutely outstanding and the memories that were being made were even more outstanding. I felt like I was one of your buddies in the train travelling across the country with you. As a fellow Canadian I look forward to watching your across Canada by train.

Oh, Mike! I wrote a long thank you for this wonderful series and somehow lost it.At 75 please don’t think that I am as good as a 13 year old with this stuff. Basically, I just want you to know that, I who am not given to easy tears , am utterly choked up at the end of this series. I have gotten to the point where I feel as though I am actually with you on these trips. It is one of my joys in life to accompany you on your travels! You have inspired me to spend time traveling by train…which I love to do…to do some of the things on my bucket list. The challenge is which one first! Thank you a million times! At 85 and a couple of major heart attacks, my bucket (list) has been relegated to the shelf….but I LOVE to travel and especially by train, so your travelogues are especially dear I my heart. It was especially nostalgic for me to watch the Alaska Marine Highway segments. I made two trips to Alaska via the AMH. I liked my choice of itinerary a little better as we were able to do the Warangell Narrows into Petersburg and a day later the Icy Straits into Sitka…but I’d do AMH to Ak. over a cruise ship any day (I’ve done both). Now I’m excited to watch the canal boats in the UK….maybe……maybe…..ummmm… prolly not compatible with a wheelchair. Sigh ….so take great videos, you young whippersnapper!!!

Mike, I've been watching you for about 4 years now and you are such an inspiration. Even for this 73 year old lady. I love how thoughtful you are with your friends and family.Your gratitude for the life you have and the adventures you've been blessed to take is refreshing. This past Fall I took the California's Zephyr and was in awe of the beauty, and the peace on the train. One of the best parts of the trip besides the beautiful views of nature was the joy of meeting so many travelers along the way. I wish I knew how to video so that I could do a channel especially for seniors to let them know this is something they can do and for those who are home bound and can't travel. I love to share journeys across the country. Until I learn how to do that tech part, I'll just have to post pics for them. Congratulations on your growth and your success. Your videos are amazing and you deserve to have a great life.Thank you for sharing!

We took the Gold Star class from Anchorage to Seward for a cruise. We met several nice people, and even one couple ended up next to us on the cruise ship! Our narrator asked us to keep an eye out for wildlife and what side of the train. So, Mr. Cool here, when I saw three moose run away from the train, just pointed out the window and yelled "Moose, Moose, Moose". Our narrator translated for me, and most got their pics. Pay for Gold Star when you can!

Talk about going out with a bang! You’re more than a train KZfaqr, you’re Canada’s greatest storyteller! Sad it’s already over. It’s only train rides and yet I feel like I’m watching a Disney movie! If you count light rail as trains, then that tunnel is one of two as the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel in Pittsburgh, PA is shared by buses and light rail. Seattle’s Downtown tunnel was once shared too but now only light rail serves it. Another cool fact about the Anton Anderson tunnel is that it’s the longest highway tunnel in North America at 2.5 miles long! It was actually rail-only until 2000 so Whittier could be better connected. The train tunnel was built so trains could supply troops stationed there during WWII

We did this trip some years ago. A few notes: After leaving Anchorage and passing Wasilla ($carah Payme territory), Denali, formerly Mount McKinley, is visible and looms ever higher as one approaches it. The land approaching is almost at sea level, so the 20,000 feet of Denali is extraordinarily impressive. We had college kids doing talks along the way describing the history and current state of the state. We stopped in Talkeetna, where there is a sign made of pieces of driftwood alongside the one paved street in town that reads: Welcome to Beautiful Downtown Talkeetna. This is where one can hop a flight that takes you around the summit of Denali (on a good day) for the experience of a lifetime. No exaggeration. The train crosses many streams where we saw lotsa fish (salmon, I guess) and stopped in the middle of several nowheres where people got on and off. One could see houses in the distance where they were from or going to.

"Nice to meet you Hungry, I'm Michael" such a dad joke. But that's fitting for you, as through these series, you're all of our dad in a way teaching us the finest wisdom and motivating us to do more. Alaska is blessed to have such magnificent beauty. I know this is meant to be a tourist train, but this is the closest Alaska has to Amtrak so if anything, this is proof that trains are important to Alaska and why Anchorage needs commuter rail! This series in general is proof that it's not about the journey, it's about the friends we make along the way. But as one chapter ends, another begins (or in this case, another series)!

Your channel somehow randomly came up on my KZfaq main page and I'm SOOOOO glad it did! As a born and raised Alaskan I wanted to see how you got from Florida to my home state of Alaska by train lol. I've watched all 10 episodes of this series and have loved each segment for how different and fun they've been and how fun you've made them. I started watching to see what trains in Florida looked like and quickly started learning things about trains because of your videos. Along the way in this series though I started to realize, yes the trains are awesome and so different and are part of the journey but, they are not the most important part of the journey. What I loved the most was your views on how the trains are a means of transportation to enjoy the moments along the way, enjoying the moments with your loved ones and with your new train friends. I loved this series and can't wait to see more of your videos and hopefully some day have the privilege and honor of traveling on an adventure with you or at least someone half as cool.as you. Just to throw it out there, and. I know it's a long shot but, I would be extremely interested in talking with you or your team about either joining you all for a trip, or coordinating some kind of special "travel Alaska bye (fill in thr blank) trip. We do have some awesome modes of transportation. How about a "Downie Live, Mike Downie travels Alaska by dog sled" 😉

Thank you for this wonderful and wanderlust-inspiring series! One small correction: the tallest mountain on our beautiful continent has been officially renamed back to its indigenous name of Denali. It translates literally to “the high one” and matches the official name of its surrounding park and preserve, rather than be named after a president with little relevance to the mountain. I figured it would be a good tidbit to include, given the indigenous flare you added to the Canadian season of this series. Much love! Hope I can get out on the rails soon, I took my first long distance Amtrak this past summer!

As I've always heard and read, Denali translates to "Big Mountain", thus why many, including Alaskans themselves often would laugh or point out that saying Mt. Denali is redundant, as it would be saying "Mountain Big Mountain". This is the first time I've heard and seen it said to be translated into something entirely different, so I find it quite interesting to note.

Mike, your enthusiasm for EVERY train, EVERY city and EVERY person is not only infectious, it's absolutely charming. Almost all of us who have commented below mention that at the very least, we've cried during this final episode. Your affection for your Dad, Mom and your friends is palpable and your lack of any pretense is refreshing. We all look forward to watching your career expand - hopefully a network with a big bank account recognizes what we do. Can't wait for the next series...

I found your channel last night, and binged every episode of the series. I was irritated I had to wait til today to watch! My dad was a locomotive engineer and his dream was to drive a steam engine, which he was able to do just one time. When you went to Mt Washington, I teared up because I know my dad would've loved to take the cog railway. I'm so glad I found you!

It’s videos/channels like this that just proves how much KZfaq can be a positive life changing medium for everyone. Its probably anecdotal, but I get this feeling that KZfaq is really giving cable and some streaming services a run for their money. Some channels on here are just as good as any cable television show or streaming show

I left Alaska after 35 years because I inherited a home in Pennsylvania that I would not have to pay a mortgage to live. But I regret and miss my Home, which for the most of my life was Alaska, and all it’s majesty. Yes the winters were long and hard, and the work desolate on the vast Artic slope. But the summers with its endless days and the mountains everywhere, and all the wildlife I regularly interacted with. Moose, Fox, beavers, wolves, even some little black bear. And up on the Slope seeing Polar bears…. There is NOTHING in the lower 48 that can compare to the life in Alaska in the summer. Nothing. It’s like my soul has been ripped from me. I miss home so much. I was very happy to see these sites and you enjoying the great frontier of Alaska. And just think all that you saw was only about 1/3 of what there is to see of the state.

I am so sad that this is the last episode on the series because it’s been such a pleasant heart warming experience. It put trains on my list; specifically the one where you went with your mom. Already sent it to my partner as a thing to do. Please do more, even if it isn’t trains, you are such a great guide.

Hey, DownieLive! What a great job on this second season of "Travels By Train". You know, the United Kingdom is the birthplace of railways, so there are many options that would make a great third series. I have not been to the U.K. myself, but I do know of a few rail places, such as the National Railway Museum in York, the Talyllyn Railway in Wales (the first preserved railway in the world), and the Ffestiniog Railway, also in Wales. Man, as a rail enthusiast, I wish I could join you on that. Keep up the great work, as always, and looking forward to "Travels By Boat"!!

I did it! I took Mike's challenge, and did it myself. I left Miami on July 1, got to DC on July 2, and then Chicago on July 3. I took the Empire Builder on July 3 to July 5. I took the Alaska Ferry Columbia on July 7 and got to Juneau on July 10. I had to fly to Anchorage, because there was no Whittier Ferry when I booked. I took the Denali Star (get Gold Class!!!!) on July 11, and I'm flew back home today. 14 days (counting the red eye to FLL and flight home). I had 2 delayed departures (both on airplanes) and made every single connection. I followed my itinerary, which is amazing!
