Who doesn’t love a tiara! I was quite shocked when I found out that I had the option to wear one at my wedding when I became a Viscountess. But more on the history of the tiara I wore later on in this vlog.

You know what? You should, and enjoy it. How lovely to be the recipient of a family piece, just think of all the history that is attached to it. How exciting - have you done any family research, looked into the lives of those who have gone before? We most of us know the names of our recent ancestors, but those from longer ago are often just names on the family tree _ Research, photographs, visits to where they were born and lived, handed down possessions, all these things will give life to those names. Best wishes.

Bring a former professional Ballerina, I have worn tiaras ( rhinestone ones) since my teens for solos. On my 21st birthday, I was given a vintage one from an estate sale. The tiara stones were zircons ( not cz zirconias!) & White topaz stones set in sterling silver. As, I became a principal soloist, I was allowed to wear it, & it became even more dear to me. Many decades later, retired from active dancing & as an Artistic Director of my own troupe, how precious it is to me & I do wear it on occasions!

I love the flower motif in it... diamond leaves also and buds. When Julie said the tiara is composed of several elements, I was surprised but delighted that one could take pieces from it to wear individually. The tiara as a whole actually does look like a crown of flowers (meant to be made as one integral piece) ...similar to the roses I wove together for the crowning of Mary in May that Catholics celebrate. Julie absolutely looked like the Queen of May ...or even a Midsummer's Eve Fairy Queen for her wedding day. I think it (and Julie wearing it) is one of the most beautiful things I've seen. That diamonds could be made to look so 'organic' and made for Springtime celebrations and still sparkle like the sun is truly a rare feat. I wonder if the flowers are meant to be wild roses, apple blossoms, or even dogwood flowers ...that would be interesting to know.

That rule is only for the British, Belgian and Danish royal families, in the Swedish, Spanish, Luxembourg, Norwegian or Dutch royal families you see them being worn by several members, with the bigger ones being worn only by the queen.

@@OnLifeandLove No, it is not the Cambridge Lovers Knot, Queen Mary loved the original and had a copy made. The original is still around, but not with the BRF. In 1913, Queen Mary decided to add a new tiara to her already-extensive collection of diadems. For inspiration, she turned to a tiara she’d long admired: the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, worn for years by her aunt, the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Since Mary wasn’t able to inherit or buy the original tiara, she went for the next best thing: she commissioned Garrard to make a copy of it. The new lover’s knot tiara was created in 1913. Originally it was topped with a row of upright pearls, making it even taller and grander than the present version. The tiara arrived in the jewelry collection of the current Queen in 1953, when she inherited Queen Mary’s jewels after her death. Elizabeth II wore the tiara, sans upright pearls, for many years. In 1981, she chose this tiara to give to her new daughter-in-law, Diana Spencer. Read about the Cambridge Lovers Knot here. www.thecourtjeweller.com/2016/12/the-cambridge-lovers-knot-tiara.html

Rule #1 didn't apply to many royal ladies. In 1837 Victoria became Queen Regnant and was wearing tiaras before her 1840 marriage. Princess Elizabeth (later QEII) and' princesses from Norway, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark were given 18th birthday tiaras long before they were wed. Princesses Anne and Margaret owned and wore tiara before their marriages. Current heiresses to the Belgian & Dutch thrones are unmarried young ladies who wore tiaras to the Jordan's recent royal wedding.

I think the 18th birthday is pretty big, actually. Saw an article about a young man who had a ball for his 18th birthday and all the girls were wearing these dainty tiaras. It was all very cute, and none of those girls was married, so not a hard and fast rule.

As a mere male, I found this interesting. Many of the rules are really traditions, and, as you pointed out with Margaret, they do get broken. An example is the tiara worn by Anne at her wedding, which had also been worn by her grandmother and others. In different circumstances, a bride was expected to wear her family tiara on the day, hence several brides will wear the same one, such as at Anne's first wedding. After the wedding she would then wear her husband's family tiara. As many of the brides marrying into the Royal Family are not aristocratic, they do not have family tiaras, so this is why the Queen loans them one. Another major event when tiaras will be seen is the State Opening of Parliament. Some commentators have not apparently understood that Julie married into the British aristocracy, and she is talking about the British Royal Family, so rules, or lack thereof, amongst European royal are totally irrelevant. I'm also unhappy to see that some people find it necessary to be rude to Julie in their comments. May I politely suggest that if you do not like this channel, then slip away quietly, those of us who are subscribed will happily cope without you and your aggression.

Never knew anything about the "ten rules of wearing a Tiera". I wore one at my wedding with my Veils! But I got married at noon. So that would be a no ,no Right away! But a little safe *almost*. Well I do not need to worry buI am notb a Royal LOL LEARNED SO MUCH Butnyet my husband's family on his moms side are related to the royals and it is a straight line since King Henry the 3rd.! I tease my husband and often say " You would have put me in the dungeon by now had your family gone in another direction and stayed in Britain. " We have been marriedbalmostb54byrs. I am still kicking! Think.he.msy keep me? His mom and I got along famou, famous, and his dad as well They have passed now. I absolutly love your vlogs and it means so much to be able to watch. I will pass my wedding Tiera and veil. To a future grand dsughter. Or daughter in law as we have two sons and no daughters. This helped even an American to take these ten rules in order to help the next one in our family to do this properly when getting married and being crowned with the tiera,of mine. The commoner really. as some one moved to AMERICA and ruined the generational line you might say. Thank you for sharing what a wonderful and very exciting journey you have been and are on!

I was the Vermont Maple Queen in 2001- I understand if you're envious. It was a very prestigious accomplishment within the Maple industry. The title came with a tiara and sash to wear during public appearances. Not everyone can look natural in a tiara, but it was exactly what was missing from my wardrobe. I now have a rather large tiara collection that I love dipping into as often as occasion permits.

Julie, I love that your mother in law offered the family tiara to you, and I love that you agreed to wear it. You obviously loved the tiara itself as well as the feeling that you were being welcomed and accepted into the family. But it's also a lovely gift that you gave to your new family in accepting the wearing of their family heirloom. What a wonderful story. My absolute favorite tiara of the Queen's is the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. Its shape with all those extraordinary diamonds is, to me, a classic style of tiara for a princess and queen.

First rule: It's usually on your wedding day, right. But there are exceptions when you are of royal blood. You are allowed to wear a tiara in that case from your 18th birthday onwards given the occasion! Best example: The recent 18th birthday celebrations of the Norwegian Princess Ingrid Alexandra. She (and other European fellow princesses like Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, or Catharina Amalia, The Princess of Orange) was wearing a tiara for that event. The reason why we have not seen Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie of York in a tiara before their respective weddings was simply lack of occasion.

History of jewelry is exceedingly important to her majesty. Every time she makes an official visit or has an official reception for foreign dignitaries she always wears jewelry specific for the occasion. When the king of Spain visited she wore pieces with Spanish history, gifts, I think from a prior Spanish monarch. She has a huge collection of important brooches and each one has a story and she ALWAYS chooses one appropriate to the occasion. When she visits Scotland she wears brooches specifically related to Scottish history. When she inspects a particular military unit she wears a brooch related to the history of that unit. When she attends a wedding of a close family member she wears a brooch related to that family member's title or related to the person they are marrying. I believe she wore a brooch related to the country of birth of one new member of the family upon their wedding. If someone gives her a brooch then she visits them she almost always wears that brooch. Sometimes on state visits she will wear jewelry in colors matching the national colors of that country. With such a huge collection she has almost any piece she would need to honor a specific person, nation or group. Nothing, when it comes to royal jewelry, is ever random or chosen simply to match an outfit.

I saw an interview with Queen Silvia of Sweden where she talked about how painful the 9 Prong Diamond tiara was when she first wore it. It is a bit tall and has an inflexible base and the hairdresser put lots and lots of hairpins in it and Silvia said it was like all of them sticking into her at once. Later, she had the base altered to better fit her head and distribute the weight more evenly. Queen Silvia can wear even the largest tiaras with great aplomb.

Thanks for another wonderful video, Julie! I really appreciated the information about the Montague family tiara, which is not only stunning, but versatile. I love tiaras that "transform" into other pieces of jewelry. A lot of the aristocratic families are very smart with their jewels that way. (The two side bouquets on the Montague tiara would look AMAZING as dress clips on either side of a slinky, 1930's décolletage!) My tiara heroine is Queen Mary, who really surpassed anyone else in the versatility of her jewels (not to mention the quantity).

Like the tiara! It's fun. 😀 mom is the Air apairent. ( Or how ever you spell it! ) her family is in the top 10 oldest Clans (families) and we're direct line. From Ireland So we're green Irish meaning they go back to the Neolithic times! We have fun with it! Lol. Thanks for asking! In Ireland I'd be considered one of the nobility. Have the title Lady. My folks would be Barron and Baroness. Henry the 8th and Elizabeth the 1st knighted my ancestors and bestowed land or gave them land in Ireland. Exc. It goes on but that's how it started. Coarse like many Irish we ended up here.

The Montagu family tiara, just like the Spencer family tiara that Diana wore at her wedding, are kept in the family to be worn by all female members at different occasions like weddings. So Luke's sister and sister(s) in law probably all wore it. Fergie, Kate and Meghan didn't have any family tiaras, so they borrowed from the Queen. Anybody with the money can go buy a tiara and wear it any time they like, of course. Princess Margaret's estate auctioned off her wedding tiara, as her kids didn't feel the need for it anymore and reportedly had to pay a lot of estate taxes and educations for grandkids. When I saw it at the pre-auction display, it was the only piece of jewelry they wouldn't bring out of the case to let you handle it or try on because they said it was very fragile. It had been bought for Margaret in 1959, even though she could have borrowed a family tiara, from the Poltimore family for £5500. It sold in 2006 for £926,400.

Whether she bought it for herself with her family money (since she didn't have a job), or her family bought it for her, which is uncertain, it was bought for her personal use. I mentioned it this way to emphasize that it was new to the family, not a tiara that had been bought or made for anybody else in the family and passed down to her.

The "loaning" of tiara, jewelry, works of art to successive members of the family keeps the wealth in the family...but the family retains ownership. When Diana and Charles divorced her loaned tiaras, jewelry, art works, etc were returned to the monarchy. When she died the Spencer tiara was returned to Earl Spencer. Charles kept her personal jewelry for William and Harry's wives...allowing the boys to choose one piece each as a memento. Catherine has some of the iconic pieces, the sapphires, pearl drop earrings and diamond bracelets, she will pass them to George's wife.

Another wonderful and amazing video! Thank you! My tiara story is very simple and not even near the experiences shared here, but it was a fun experience for a young girl like me. My parents were typical middle class. My Mom was an Avon Lady for a number of years when I was a young girl. You can imagine how exciting that was for a 7 yr old and her girlfriends! I don’t know what Avon offers now, but there were tons of samples to be given back then, and of course, those cute little, tiny lipsticks in the ‘60’s! My Mom won some kind of award for selling the most Avon for her district and she received a beautiful cut glass bowl and a TIARA! (costume jewelry, of course) I got to wear that tiara for many a Halloween costume and other dress up occasions. It’s a wonderful childhood memory. 💖

I was curious about why the Duchess of Cambridge only wore a few tiaras, but not so curious as to look it up lol. So thanks for the info! I know that each royal house has their own rules for a reason, but I like the more lenient rules of the Swedish Royal family in this case where the ladies can borrow more of the tiaras from the royal family to go with their outfits. I have never worn a tiara, but one o my favorites is Princess Sofia of Sweden's Palmette Tiara. I love that her in-laws gifted her this for her wedding. I also adore that in the subsequent years she has adapted it and added different stones at the top for different occasions.

I am just so sorry we don’t see tiaras at grand receptions and dinners, state affairs - we just don’t see these grand tiaras anymore. I remember Diana on so many tours turned out in the most beautiful gowns and tiaras everywhere around the world she went. No more. No more ground state dinners. What a boring time we live in.
