My cousin passed away in Jan. 1996 when he was 16. A couple years ago I pulled out his old super Nintendo games and secret of evermore was in there. His save was at the end of the game. He named his dog Killer. I'm sure he would be a huge rpg fan if he was around today.

I'm sorry to hear about your cousin. I was 9 at the time and this was one of my top favorite games (Along with Super Mario RPG and Super Mario World). If you never played it I would actually recommend it. The alchemy system was limiting at times but I personally enjoyed it due to a more realistic aspect as I needed to get the resources for my spells (example Flash(fireball) took wax and oil and Acid rain take ash and water). The attacking can feel a bit dated compared to games now but will a little skill it gets understandable. I laughed when he got mad by getting killed by the raptors since that is the first boss of the game and actually the only battle, that I am aware of, that you can die and still progress. Like the first boss in Mega Man X but with a slight possibility of winning (If you lose it isn't a big deal as you only lose out on xp and money).

Secret of Evermore has one of the most unique atmospheres of any RPG from that era. Maybe something about it being made by Westerners trying to emulate the Japanese style is what made it that way. What Erick says about the hit detection is true. Evermore and Secret of Mana are both great action RPGs, but are hampered by the god awful hit detection. You should play through it sometime in memory of your cousin. It takes about 25 hours to beat and maintains a good pace right up to the end.

I really love Monark too! I really like the story, the characters, the horror elements, and that we get to choose what the character says time and again. I really like how you get to know so much about the villains and what drove them to make contracts. It really shows that a conflict like this isn't all black and white, it's more like shades of gray. For some of the villains I felt guilty for having to fight against them, they weren't entirely wrong but they weren't entirely right either. Reminds me of what they did for the villains for Caligula Effect Overdose and I liked that. The grinding can really get to you though, but I consider it to be no big deal if the story is good.

Edge of Eternity is one of those "almost there" games. A pretty decent game in its own right but their next game should be quite good if they fix up the issues the game has and the bland open world/side quests. I didn't have any graphical issues on PS5 too.

Relayer looks exactly like the kind of game I would enjoy a lot. I've never played a Super Robot Wars game, but I have played some of the SD Gundam G Generation games (particularly WARS. I love that one!), and it looks a LOT like that kind of game. I don't know why anyone would want to skip the battle-animations, though. Isn't the main appeal in a Mech Strategy RPG the opportunity to see those giant Mechs duke it out with each other?

I have been interested in Edge Of Eternity for awhile now. It is plain to see that the game does not look flawless, yet something about it captivates me. I am a big fan of the name, it entices me. The game may not be triple a, but it looks fantastical. It’s cool that the devs are based in France. The only off-putting thing I notice for me is the story about brother and sister. I have one sibling that is a sister, and she is the complete opposite of me. We don’t get along. 😆 I would like to try Edge Of Eternity someday. Can anyone vouch for me?

Frequently I don't agree with your difficulty assessments, but I have to concur with Monark. I tried the Monark demo and what put me off the game was that by playing carefully to try to avoid battle casualties, I was penalised by getting fewer spirit points, for not finishing the battle in the specified number of turns. I started to suspect I would be falling further and further behind the enemies' levels. Since I wasn't enjoying the battles anyway I didn't care whether or not a way of grinding was available. Demo deleted.

5:38 Every attack in a tactical RPG is a dice roll. They just don't usually show it. I do like the idea of each character having a customizable 'deck' of abilities you draw a random hand from though, similar to Baten Kaitos or the Mega Man Battle Network series. Sometimes I really wonder if excessive grinding is a cultural thing, like maybe Japanese players are just so accustomed to it that they'd consider a game with a more natural difficulty curve they didn't have to spend lots of time grinding levels in to be too easy, yet all my favorite JRPGs are ones you can beat without ever grinding so long as you fight smart.

Monark has levelling areas you can find the number of in the notes you find around the world... Ten minutes in there and you are even over levelled for the next story battle. I wouldn't even call it grinding as those battles are over so quickly and give you so much exp reward. I actually had to stop doing them because I was one-shotting all the story bosses all the time and that was not fun. But yeah I got a lot of friends that had the same opinion as you, as those areas' numbers are "hidden" in a submenu (one in a ""math"" riddle).

For Lost Odyssey I felt the same once I reached the exact same boss. Gave up, restarted the game years later, but this time I realized that I simply needed to equip the correct item (one for protecting from lightning for each of my characters), then the boss was no match. The game basically limit the party levels for each boss encounters. We can't level up no more and need to equip the correct items/learn the correct magic spells. This is the only thing that I hate about this game (remining me in a way FFVIII) as everything else is great, the soundtrack being one of my favourite of all time.

Word. The combat in secret of evermore is the only thing that game has that makes it better than a cheap secret of mana ripoff. Secret of mana's combat felt amazing at the time when it was new, but objectvely, you just stand away from the enemies until your attack bar charges up, move in, unload, run away, repeat. You do almost no actual dodging or tactical decisions. Sadly this is true for seiken densetsu 3 as well. In Evermore however, the enemies attack in such a way that you do actually actively dodge and weave to avoid attacks instead of just a general "stand away" strategy. Also. Dang you for the random xenosaga BGM, im kinda in the mood to replay that series for like the 4th effing time, but my game backlog is like nooooo dont do it.

well to be blunt, 10 RPG's is most of them for the english translated SNES ones. deff a few more less heard of/niche ones but of the main lineup that every1 adores and loves and talks about 10 is close to the limit. also back then as compared to now most people who got games got them very sparingly, and rpg fans had to wait quite a while sometimes for new games of the genre as opposed to a billion games a year nowadays. when we grew up with one of these games we spent alota time really getting to know them in and out

The melee attacks were a pain but when you get used to it I didn't find it that bad. Once you get a spear is definitely isn't as bad though but that initial build up before charging really makes you work for it. Alch I loved for the realism (Wax + Oil for Flash) instead of magic points. And for the feeling lost at times I feel fit into the game. The game generally guided you but exploration was also key to find more spells and abilities which wasn't super common at the time.

Hard time to shove it in D Tier or very last C Tier below DQII(which is lucky in the bottom of C Tier and not D Tier). Here's five reasons to somehow bring back replayability. Well one, "monster taming" is gone and that would've helped the game if we could have a monster farm or something. However sufferable the vocations are if choose the wrong combination leads to too much of a grind. Two, longer dungeons were too long or weren't necessary compared to fast monster spawns which just have longer dungeons rather then too much spawns. I mean there is a skill for battle quicker. Three, if this was a remake then why is DQIV and DQV have better extra content. Also add some connections rather then just the Fungeon. Four, they could've expand the story(talking about DQVI Manga certain lore) from the very start as a feature for Milly and Carver but mentions more of the past of their story which effects their levels and stats before going in the original gameplay like where it literally started in SNES. This could also have certain places to be spoiled earlier to not confuse a player then from the original game because it does have some lost directions and giving a open memory could help where things are at. Five, make the Fungeon fun because DQIII, DQIV, DQV, and plenty of other DQ Fungeons are more fun then this. I would say one more thing is they'd exchanged a certain enemy(both are the same skin though different color and stats) that wasn't in the original game and I don't know why they did that. Just don't like very limited gameplay rather then not a force of optional choice that doesn't force to be limited. It just suffers the game more. DQVI could have a right push but it leads it hanging from the rest of the main series. Now I am on DWVII(PSX) my personal favorite(this doesn't mean it's #1 in some cases) and not sure every pro and con compare to the 3DS version though both versions aren't DE and I still have this excuse to defend each side of the versions. The debate for that still continues with me because it is the one that brought me here in the very first place, no joke. However looking at DQXOfflineEdition graphics could look good for another remake for DQVII but this time keep some original things and sprites from the PS1/PSX though censor the old OG symbolism because it cannot ever happen unless if it was on PC anyone could have a choice to Mod it in(I wouldn't). Whenever DQVI happens in the topics I have this urge to talk about DQVII as well.

really couldn't get into edge of eternity. I really tried to like it but it's truly awful, it really is.

God Eater Games (and most RPGs IMO) would do so much better if they cut out all the grindy fat. It's boring to me to do the same things over and over and over again.

Developers take note: when Erick, "The RPG Sage", Landon feels your game's combat/levelling system is unfair - well it's safe to say you goofed big-time 🥳

Monark clearly takes from the Lost Dimension battle system but feels like a downgrade everywhere else, Himeno had more personality than all the cast here.
