I have had two experiences with the FBI. I worked at a hotel where the President was going to be at prior to the Gulf War. We had the FBI there 3 days before. We were all screened then and checked the day he was there as we entered. Bomb dogs were run thru the hotel multiple times. I saw them in look even in the ceiling tiles. Second time I became a teacher at a School about 90 miles from the Detroit FBI office. 2 Freshmen sent a threat to the Presidents online site. The threat was traced to the school and to the library. The FBI was there in 2 hours. They figured out who had logged in and had the students in custody. They were released after a conversation with the boys and their parents. All I could think was " Holy shit".

I was about 15 at the time and we stayed at a motel right next to the airport. When we woke up the next morning we could see crowds of people at the airport. We had no idea what was going on but a little while later Airforce one flew in with President Nixon on board. Once the plane was parked we had a perfect view of the boarding stairs. My dad had brought along two bolt action hunting rifles which were in our motel room. We were never approached by the secret service or anyone.

@2:00 The SS's ink library is actually more related to it's dual responsibility as the principal federal LE agency responsible for investigating and suppressing counterfeiting of US Currency (and I believe some other US Treasury produced documents) rather than for use in investigating threatening letters. While I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to dip into that database for use on a threatening letter, that wasn't the principle use it was built for. The SS also has responsibility for investigating organized credit card fraud. They aren't solely about presidential protection. Also a lot of the paranoia about the Patriot Act are overblown at this point - while it granted a lot of surveillance powers immediately after 9/11, a sunset clause (expiration) was attached to many portions of it and many of the more drastic "powers/authorizations" have not been renewed by Congress and permitted to lapse.

I used to work at a restaurant called Noodles and Company. We had someone try to bring in fake money. They would take a lower amount bill, bleach it and then print over it with a higher value amount. The water mark would not match the dollar amount which gave it away. Marker didn't pick it up. Secret service overlooks the US Currency as well so they had came to our restaurant to obtain the fake money.

The protective intelligence function of the USSS is probably the most valuable asset with regard to Presidential security. Any zillionaire can hire a squad of personal security contractors and ride around in an armored limousine, but these provide only the last line of defense, as the first is supposed to be the network of contacts with law enforcement agencies all over the country, uncovering possible threats (especially terrorist ones). Private security just doesn't have those kind of resources.

The further you get (and thus the higher chance you could become President) the larger your protection gets.
