I was on a cruise from NY to Bermuda back in August, and apparently around 1 am an older man had a health issue not related to the cruise. This was about 6 hours after we left NY, and the crew were amazing about it. I looked at the cruise tracking thing the next morning and apparently the boat turned around, went half way to Atlantic City, had a helicopter pick up the sick man (who lived), and then we turned back around for Bermuda, and got there on time. This was the Anthem of the Seas.

Enough can't be said about being nice to the crew. As I have found out many are working to support large families back home and really don't have the greatest accommodations even in large cruise lines. I remember one woman loved Pringles chips but wasn't allowed off the boat most of the time and wasn't able to get them. She cried when we bought her all the flavors we could find on the island. The tiniest kindness goes along way for many staff when they are away from family. Plus there is nothing wrong with making a new friend along the way.

If you "go exploring" throughout the ship at night, you commit a serious security violation and will be disembarked at the next port, if not even pressed with charges. The ships work on a very strict clearance level and entering non-passenger areas is like you wandering into any other kind of restricted territory, not only violating security but maybe even compromising overall safety. Don't listen to stupid youtubers and stay in your designated areas.

Exploring the ship at night and "going to places that you shouldn't" is a great way to get kicked off and blacklisted 👍 and possibly even face federal terrorism charges onshore. Think about it, if crew find you snooping around crew only areas at night, they are definitely gonna question your motives! Please don't do this

#1 is wrong... this is coming from someone who contracts to several cruise lines. Ships don't have brigs anymore. They haven't for a long long time. #2 is wrong... To get crew discounts, you need a Crew ID card. If you're caught without a crew ID card in a crew area, you get kicked off the ship in the next port. If another crew member brings you back there, they get fired. #3 is accurate... There is a morgue on board. Usually enough for two people at a time in the medical center. #4 is somewhat accurate... You'll never hear any of the codes you mentioned in a public area, nor would they be announced over a public address sytem. Nor does anyone actually use the codes you've mentioned. #5 is Cruise ships don't charge you for extra toilet paper... there are thousands of extra rolls on board at any time... idiot #6 There are no crew hot tubs. They were removed a long time ago. If they still exist, it's not a crew area. It's a guest area. #7 You're an idiot for telling people things like this. Not only is it highly inaccurate, but you're just tempting people to do stupid shit. #8 This isn't a secret, not in the slightest. On most ships, it's at the front of the ship in an area known as the Solarium. #9 To be a lecturer, you need to be certified and acreddited. You get paid, but you're generally on board for months at a time -- not a week at a time. #10 1/4 of cruise ships being American? More like 1/64. The last ship I was on full time had 980 crew members on board with about six American's on board.

You also forgot to mention that even if the crew members get paid less what "western nation"standards are, the pay they recieve allows their families back home to live very comfortably. There is a reason many cruise crew members make long term careers out of it. Also they get very good benefits the longer they stay employed with a company.

tom c Usually ships do have cells. Its done in different kinds of ways, sometimes security just "grounds" people so they are assigned to their cabins and shouldnt leave until the next morning. Other times people are put into cells. Those cells usually arent nice i can tell you. The ones we have on the ship i work on could be classed as solitary confiment. You have one prison toilet and one thin plastic matress in a small blue room with a solid metal door. Also privacy isnt a thing in those. There are cameras which both security and the bridge monitors, so you might want think tvice about getting too comfortable, as many people are watching you. Also its close to the engine room so its a bit noisy in it. Lastly, you shouldnt only "fear" security if you are doing something bad. The officers and deckhands have a higher responsibility of keeping everyone safe, security is mostly there so officers and deckhands dont have to deal with the passenger who is causing a problem. Many times security are doing their "arrest" not under their will but according to the orders of a deckhand or officer.

Here's some real cruise line advice. Wanna see the best sunrises ever, get up early on "at sea" days. Want cheaper spa services, book for port days, especially longer and more popular ports and earlier inn the day. "At sea" bookings fill up quick, usually before the ship disembarks. Some cruise lines let you eat dinner at whichever regular "restaurant" you'd like (Disney does if you make prior arrangements, or just ask). Want a free mocha, ask your beverage server during dinner, they can usually pull some strings to get some non-alcoholic drinks that are normally an extra charge. Want more lobster on lobster night, tell your server a night or two before. They'll be happy to feed you several plates if you like. Want to always have a lounger at the pool? Give up, it's not gonna happen. Don't bother eating a full breakfast the morning of your cruise, eat something light. Don’t fill up, you'll be lugging your stuff for a little while, just head straight to the buffet once onboard. Fly in at least a full day before your cruise, not the day of or the night before. You'll be too tired to enjoy the first day. This is a must if you have children or if you're flying coast to coast. Couples, can manage flying the morning of, it'll be rough though. Fly home the same day with children, if possible. They'll be knocked out for the plane ride. Adults, you can take it easy, fly out the next day or rush home either way. Bring door magnets, like the paper with magnetic film. Decorate your cabin door just a little to help you recognise your door more easily. Use the elevators that aren't nearest the most popular areas (pools, bars, promenade and theaters), try near the aft or just take the stairs if you're going down or only two or three decks up. Also, get on empty elevators going the wrong way. Only buy your excursions through the cruise lines. They have more control over any complaints, cancellations and travel. Also, in Alaska if your tour makes you miss your ship, don't worry. Alaska has laws requiring that they put up in a hotel and get you back home or back on the ship and they face hefty fines. Disney's two bigger ships, soon to be their medium-sized, have a deck 14. It's usually reserved for special events but when it's not in use they set it up for toddler time. Try to be in this area when the "When you wish upon a star" horn melody plays. It's an experience to behold! Maybe not so much fun for young children, it might traumatize them. Don't want your young child becoming seasick, take them out of the stroller. This is especially true during rough seas. Let them run around or carry them while you keep moving around, don't let them be stationary. When they run around the rocking of the ship is less noticeable. When they're sitting but rolling with the seas, it can make them sick in a just a couple of minutes. If your child does get sick, dad takes them to the restroom for cleanup, the line is so much shorter. Finally, book your cruise for early fall or after school starts when going with family cruise lines, you're more likely to face hurricane induced rough seas (still rare) but its cheaper (off-peak) and you'll have more fun with less children onboard. Oh, a bonus tip. I'd stay away from a certain company and it's subsidiaries. They're in the news the most for the wrong reasons. Until they can figure out how to not leak sewage, not run aground (United Concordia) lose all power and run adrift for days and kill maintenance workers in elevators that apparently aren't locked out. I'd stick to the cruise lines that have better history.

A few of the ACTUAL Codes: ALPHA - Medical Emergency (of any nature), BRAVO - Fire, CHARLIE - Collision, DELTA - Damage to the ship/hull, OSCAR - Man Overboard, PAPA - Pollution. There are a few more less common codes and these can very slightly from company to company.

Bodies aren't always held until the final port of call. I was on the Carnival Dream in Cozumel two years ago. The Carnival Magic pulled into port hours after the other ships had already been moored, and it wasn't even scheduled to be there that day. Turns out a man in his 40's had died of cardiac arrest while playing basketball on board. The Magic therefore made a stop at the nearest port, Cozumel, to send the body home (presumably by plane).

Worked on cruise ships for over 10 years, never been on a ship where the passengers can use the crew bars. Huge no go on that as the crew member runs the risk of getting a written warning or sacked. As for the death of the passenger, most are taken off at the next port and travel arrangements are made for the family. Oh and as for the code thing, you don't get a free drink. 10 years, never see it. Sorry to shout you down, but this did make me laugh

spend the 50$ and go on the tour that cruise does. you go through almost all of the crew only sections with the exception of the morgue. you get to see the massive freezers and food storage they use, meet the captain on the bridge, see the crew quarters and their rest areas, see how all the logistics are handled, see how the engines are maintained and operated. full tour takes about 2.5 hours. well worth the money.

Your entire segment on "Join the Crew" is categorically UNTRUE. Yes, some cruise employees have entitlement to be in passenger areas while off duty. This is comprised of staff and officers only, and never the general crew. Staff members are contracted vendors, and may wear their own clothing, but must always wear a name tag. Officers will always be in evening dress uniforms. Always. General crew can get public access for an evening by special permission only. While there is a crew bar, it is beer and wine only. Drinks are generally at cost. If you *really* want to party with the crew, ask where they go on overnight ports. And, if you ever are invited to a karaoke party with Fillipinos...you best be ready to get sideways, because those cats know how to party.

@michaelcarter9764
@michaelcarter9764 6 жыл бұрын
Carlos Google Maps Well, it certainly was not like that on the cruise line I was employed by. Mainly, because the crew always needed to be at a "ready" state, in case of emergency. Crew were able to purchase "to go" from the crew bar, and were allowed a 6 pack of beer, and one bottle of wine in the cabin (per crew member). For those that sail with NCLA in Hawaii, the crew there are bound by US law, and may never have more than .08 BAC. There is also no take home alcohol to the cabins. But with two overnight ports, this is/was hardly any issue. ****PRO TIP**** If you want to sneak booze onto a cruise ship, don't be an amateur and try to put it in a water bottle. Buy a BIG bottle of contact solution, rinse it out, and put it in that. One of the big size almost holds a fifth of booze. 😎

As a technician having worked on nearly every cruisline I can say that what is sold in crew bar varies from cruisline to cruisline. Some sell Liquor other don't. Most have blood alcohol limits. Some have a 0 alcohol limit for officers others don't. And also keep in mind that rules will be different depending the Flag the ship is sailing. About crew members in public areas also this depends cruisline. I know several where all crew members have full public area rights. But specially Philipinos nearly never take advantage of this as they don't like it to much.

Paulette Sopel the captain, once in international waters is the person that can put you on the brig. Much like on airlines the pilot can land a plane for a rowdy passenger and have them arrested or have them removed from a flight. The captain of a cruise can, for any reason lock you away for any period of time during the cruise.

I'm not a navy engineer, or even an engineer for that matter, but I'm a mechanic enthusiast and would absolutely LOVE to see the inner workings of a big cruise ship. Like, if I was allowed to take a look on all those things you said, that'd be worth half of the cruise already. (for me, of course, I'm weird like that hahah) I wonder if they'd take someone like me to those areas...

I and a friend are on a list where we get free cruises by volunteering as escorts on land tours. It's not as easy as it sounds. You have to be first-aid and CPR certified and willing to help on the tours with passengers who might need assistance, such as toileting. You're responsible for all of them, have to make sure they're all there, and at the end you fill out enormous forms critiquing the tour to see if the cruise line wants to keep it or the company that provides it. You get the cheapest inside stateroom, go on whatever tour they tell you. And be prepared for the unexpected. While on a Greek Isle, a tour got back late and the tenders had returned to the ship. They were going to use local fishing boats to ferry the remaining passengers back. One woman became hysterical and I offered to take her under tow (pardon the pun) as the crew that remained couldn't calm her.

I used to work for Royal Caribbean. No way in hell are we going to risk our jobs to bring a guest to the crew bar. In fact crew members are almost scared of guest because we could lose our jobs so easily if we get even slightly "friendly" with them. Also Cones is actually from the movie cone heads. Because guest always ask where are you from since most of the crew is foreigners. "We come from France!" Also I never heard of code V or P before but maybe that is just Royal, However Code Echo is for man over board. It is very rare you will hear it but every time you do you will see every crew member perk up. As for the toilet paper... I never heard of that before. As for Americans on board as crew. On my ship that had 3,000 crew members we had member 5-10 American Crew members. But if you add the cast to the shows then maybe around 30. And yes it is because of very poor working environment. Working every single day for 8 months at a time and having to share a very tine cabin with multiple people. Which is why I left. Lastly fun fact. I believe I am in one of the photos in this video. I was on the bow of the Quantum of the Seas at 6:01. The Ship was in Germany being taken out of it's dry dock for the first time. I was on board during the construction of it. And that ship did not have a private crew pool/hot tub. Not many of them do.

Both my brothers-in-law worked cruise liners for a while. Neither of them described the slave-ship conditions for the out-of-sight crew that you infer. Instead, aside from close accommodation (understandable), the conditions are generally very good, including pay when you consider that all your needs are basically covered. The eldest met a guest socially after hours, was caught and was put off the ship at the next port (Egypt I believe). He violated rules that had been made crystal clear to him and his dismissal was 100% warranted. On a recent cruise, my wife was discussing opportunities for my two sons to join a liner, with one of the senior staff (head of security), who very politely declined an offer of non-alcoholic drink and even would not sit, as this is a breach of the liner's policy. The liner's are strict for a reason - if you're not prepared to follow the rules (as a passenger or crew member) then suffer the consequences. Do you honestly expect us to believe that the cruise is going to charge for extra toilet paper when you can eat all you want all day? I that how they recover the food cost - by making money on the toilet paper when you take an extra crap through the day - that's genius :P!!

So I am a contractor for a cruise company meening that I work short contracts on the ship(generally 2 week contracts or for however long I am needed if it is a longer cruise) and I can tell you that the "Join The Crew" "fact" is 100% false. For starters crew members have to fallow a strict dress code especially if they are in passenger arias ex: with the company i work for its basically business casual during the day and Business formal during the nigh though it can vary from ship to ship and company to company. Secondly, Crew members have to follow a strict code of conduct that if they break they can be fired for. For example on one of the ships I've worked for there was A rule that crew members cannot walk through out passenger areas in large groups and they can not sit in passenger dining areas more than 4 to a table. Again rules vary from a ship to ship and company to company it's just an example from one of my ships. I'm fairly certain however thart partying it up with passengers in none Dress code approved clothing would be against the rules unless that they were the people who are hosting the party who would still be in their uniforms. Finally we get to the part where it's if you buddy up to enough crew members you'll make yourself look like a crew member and thus get all the perks that is A 175% incorrect. It wont-work don't try you'll get in trouble and end up in the Brig or kicked off the ship so don't do it. You won't be able to blend in with crew members because passenger cards, contractor cards and crew cards all look different so that Alone will tell the bartender that you're a passenger not A crewmember. On top of this crew members and contractors all gets ID badges which crew members are required to wear at all times everywhere on the ship with the exception Of their personal cabins. Now with this in mind in order to successfully walk around crew area which includes the crew bar you have to have a name badge that shows that you are either a crew member or a contractor if you do not have one you can not go to any part of the crew area except for the brig because that's where you will end up if you try to do this and one of the officers on the ship finds you. Now contractors are a little bit different than crewmembers meaning that not all of the rules, like the dress code apply as strictly to us as the rest the crew. I like to joke that I'm a glorified crew member and/or a glorified passenger because I can go anywhere passengers can go as well as most places that Crew can go. As a contractor I am required to take my name badge off when in passenger areas so that I am not confused for a crew member in the event of an emergency as I have not gone through the same training as them. Regardless bottom line is if you don't have the stuff required by the ship for crew to have, then you will not be seen or mistaken as a crew member. Maybe as a contractor up until the bartender sees your card. Now you can make friends with crew members ( i do encurag you to cuz they are grate) and they may be able to buy you a drink and get you the discount that way but it's highly unlikely. Honestly the easiest way to get crew discount is to just join the crew. It's actually really fun to work on the ship. I mean again I'm not a "normal" crew member am I'm a contractor. But base off some of the people I've met during my times on the ship its just one big family filled with amazing and different types of people. So don't sell it short Top 10. Also at least on my ships, the crew discount is only 10% so it's not that good but it's a lot better than nothing. Also also there are not secret pools for crew on most ships. Also also also...hey Mix is on the ships I've worked on. It's nestled right between taste and savor which are both complimentary dinner dining on the ships I've worked on. fun fact Also ×4, The guest lecturers would fall under the contractors position. There are many different types of contractors. For instance my specific contractor type is an entertainment contractor. Sorry for this post being so long and will likely having Spelling or grammar errors but seeing as though I and actually a part of a cruise line I had to set that record straight. So remember, if you've learned anything just don't try faking being a crewmember. It wont work so don't do it. You'll likely end up getting in trouble and/or possibly kicked off the ship. That also goes for sneaking around the ship because yes there are a lot of crew members that walk around the crew areas to get to their stations any given time of the night as well as a ton of cameras all throughout the ship. You will get caught and you will get in trouble. Just saying.

I knew about the prison one because I work at the check-in and disembark of Costa Cruciere and just last week we had a guest arrested because he was causing mayhem with some of the female attendants inside the ship. But he wasn't arrested in the prison, they just put a guards 24/7 in front of his cabin and he was forbidden to leave the cabin (they would bring him food, of course)

Most of this is a load of bollocks... you can't bring passengers to the crew bar unless there has been prior approval signed by the staff captain and chief security way before they cruise. Then on some ships they have to be accompanied by a crew member for example if a family member or friend is cruising and then they have to wear an ID tag that may say "crew family" If a cruise line doesn't want you to know something then guess what... you'll never know.

My parents went for a cruise in the early 2000's and it was "All inclusive". They loved it, but problem was that there were "incidental costs" added to their bill. They had to pay mandatory tips to everyone all the time, Alcohol was way too expensive as it was far above what it would normally cost (the cost was sometimes several times the normal cost for some drinks),The luggage handlers at certain ports had to be paid "Unsolicited gratuities" for them to actually do their jobs and a couple of minor things were charge. A £3000 (ish) Cruise ended up costing my parents in excess of £7000 at the end.

We try to limit our shore excursions as much as possible, though it depends on where you dock. Sometimes ships dock in boring ports that have little beyond "watching the ships go by", but if it's somewhere interesting, like Tallin, we just get off and walk.
