In this video, I will teach you 10 signs of a potential speech delay in 2 year olds. I begin by explaining what a speech delay is and how it can be defined differently by different people. I highlight key developmental milestones for 2 year olds and explain why they are important to support if your toddler hasn’t mastered them yet. Plus, I share what to do if you notice a sign of a potential speech delay in your 2 year old. By the end of the video you’ll have a general understanding of what speech therapists are looking for in 2 year olds’ talking, understanding, and pronunciation skills.

Thank you for defining “talking” most videos use the term “nonverbal” and don’t actually describe what it means! Best video on the subject I’ve seen so far.

Hello Ma'am, my daughter started saying just 3 words when she was 16 months like papa, mama, aqua which is water because my wife is spanish. She is 23 months now and will turn 2 years next month. She now doesn't speak when you repeat words to her but on her own private time when watching TV, she repeat some words from TV and also imitate actions on TV. Is this a sign of speech delay or autism?

Hi:) Thanks for sharing your personal experience here, I know other parents who are reading the comments may be experiencing something similiar. Language regression (when a child stops using words they used to) is a one characteristic of autism - but this alone would not warrant a diagnosis of autism. I explain this in detail in a blog post - toddlertalk.com/blog/my-toddler-is-not-saying-words-they-used-to If you have concerns, please know that there are professionals out there ready to help you. Here in the United States you don't even need a doctor's referral to get a speech therapy evaluation. I will link more about how to find help here - toddlertalk.com/blog/how-to-find-a-pediatric-speech-therapist-near-me

My son is almost 2 and 2 months, he can say over 100 words and understands everything, follow directions and copies words but his pronunciation is off. He pronounces the vowel sounds and the sounds made with the front of the tongue but pronounces words that begin with a R and H with a Y sound and words beginning with W he says with the V sound, valk instead of walk as one example. He is growing up hearing two languages and I have noticed that his Dad sometimes pronounces W with a V too! I don't think the w sound exists in his native language (Farsi), could that be a contributing factor?

Definitely, while lots of the early language (vocabulary/comprehension) milestones are the same across all languages, the speech milestones will be different. The sounds that your child learns will be influenced by the sounds they hear. English has some sounds that do not exist in Farsi, and vice versa. In the world of speech therapy, we often classify these as "differences" in speech development that are not cause for concern. Unfortunately, I cannot make any recommendations for your scenario specifically since I haven't met your son. If you have any concerns (big or small), it's always a good idea to consult with your doctor or a speech therapist in your area.

Hi. Thank you for sharing. I have a few additional resources for you that can help with encouraging your twins to say more words. First, I recommend watching this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jrOZZbOhvpqVqJs.html I filmed myself playing with my nephew who was saying a few words as well. I make tons of comments throughout the video about the strategies I am using. Since your twins seem to be saying some words I think these same strategies will be helpful! I also have a free course that teaches 4 powerful strategies for at home speech practice so you can encourage your children to learn new words. I will include a link to sign up for free here: courses.toddlertalk.com/offers/EDnyd6ie
